A mouse does not rely on just one hole:

I am inclined to think that Persephone is telling us that she has some tricks up her sleeve. In other words, she's not just a computer hacker.

So maybe b!X is right and Persephone is Hugh's paramour in the viedo?

But it could also mean that she is working on the web someplace else, too. Perhaps a real widmore or paik industries site sometime soon?

Yeah I would think that they would check their stuff first, unless we decoded wrong.
There are a couple of different ways to convert from and to base 64. They were apparently using a slightly different one than we were. If you check out http://www.paulschou.com/tools/xlate/ , you'll see that amedoustesonehonotrelyonjleoug== and amedoustesonehonotrelyonjleous will both give the same decimal result.

Everything you wanted to know about Base64 and more.

Step by step Base 64 encode/decoding of "amedoustesonehonotrelyonjleous" from "106 103 157 162 235 45 122 202 39 122 26 39 162 218 222 151 42 39 142 87 168 186'

Step 1 - realize that 4 base64 characters map to 3 ascii characters.
Step 2 - use http://www.paulschou.com/tools/xlate/ and enter in "amed" into the BASE64 box (this is the first 4 base64 characters).
Step 3 - look at the decimal output, and note that they are the first 3 decimal # of persephone's message. [106 103 157]
Step 4 - look at the binary output. [01101010 01100111 10011101]
That is the 3 decimal #'s in binary.
But if you group those 24 bits in sets of 6, you get [011010 100110 011110 011101]
this is the base64 character set.
a = 011010
b = 011011
c = 011100
d = 011101
e = 011110
.......
z = 110011

Step 5 - skip sets of 4 base 64 characters.
"amed oust eson ehon otre lyon jleo us"

You can test "jleo" real quick. jleo => 100011 100101 011110 101000 => 10001110 01010111 10101000 => 142 87 168

Step 6 -
the last 2 letters - "us" can't be translated reliably

us => 101110 101100 => 10111010 1100 => 186 ??? you've only got half of an ascii character.

this is why translating back to base 64 gives you "g=="

Workaround - the pm's could have encoded "usXX" - and we might have known to ignore the XX.

NOTE: the base64 character set goes from 0-63 with the following characters.
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789+/

Workaround # 2 - the pm's could have encoded "us++" => 186 207 190.
Again - there was the chance we would have chased after the meaning of ++

I guess I'm just inclined to take it literally, where hole=web location. So if http://persephone.hansofoundation.org is one 'hole', where's the other? and does it already exist? I've been trying all kinds of things to substitute for 'persephone' with no luck..

That's a browser-internal thing, depending on when the page freshly loaded into your cache. The expiration shows you when it's going to do another "real" load from the server as opposed to from your cache. Or something like that, I'm not entirely sure. But it's not telling you about updates, I bet.

You could try deleting your cache and loading the page again. This should change those dates. I think 3 days is common for sites to stay in your cache before they get updated. That's sometimes causing people to not get the latest updates although they repeatedly try to load the page in question. It just doesn't work unless they clean the cache and try again.

Huh? Wha-? You're right, now p.thf.org just says "2"

So is this like 'standby' or when it was intentionally left blank, or something else? Kinda hard to derive any code out of a single digit.

Standby could probably mean she's just not using it right now Smile

You'll notice that if you use 2 as the Dec/Char and decode, we get the return of that annoying g== instance, this time resulting in

Ag==

As with last time, if you type

As

into the Base64 field, the Dec/Char field will return the original 2.

The first word in a longer message perhaps?

The problem with this reasoning is that if you type *anything* between 'Ag' and 'Av' into the Base64 box and decode, you'll wind up with '2' in the Dec/Char field. I suppose you could argue that we're should act according to the past situation and assume that 'g==' equals 's' rather than anything else, but that seems stretching it.

I made this error playing Perplex City. It's just an internal browser thing. It has to do with your cache and when your browser will look for an updated page. The number will be different for practically every person.

Actually, it seems that "2" was hinting at something which we had previously missed.
