Don't use a program to do it. Do it yourself manually with this lookup table:

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789
NOPQRSTUVWXYZABCDEFGHIJKLMnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklm5678901234

I'm not buying the whole rot thing for the number 1. In both the keys listed for rot 13 and rot 18, the numbers were merely rot 5. I don't think that it is proper roting techniques to rot a number. I'm sticking with May 1 on this one. Sorry.

Also...Richard Dreyfus is going to be so mad about his website...

Back to basics

Whoah whoah whoah! Reign it in guys.
I'm impressed that y'all know how to decode ASCII and do a ROT cypher but keep something in mind here. This is being done by the same network that brought us Push, Nevada. Keep it simple. Don't overthink it.

One thing missing in all of these 23 pages I just sifted thru (ugh!) is any mention of any clues. The original ABC press release announcing the launch is abundantly clear that there are clues that lead in a specific direction.

Here's what jumped out at me:

Phone message 3 for Dr. Mittelwerk states that he's out for three weeks and if you need updates about your confidential projects, look in the project manual for hotline Access Instructions.

Dunno about Rot codes and all that nonsense. I want to find a Project manual and the access instructions!

Thinking along the lines of when I solved Missing Organs back at Rottentomatoes, I thought, well, what if these all apply to letters. I, admittedly arbitrarily, went 1-26 = A-z, 27-52 = A-Z, and so on, so forth. Here's what I got.

B T G F M T K F J K F X F X N F X N F X N W S F W F D F L F L M T T E Q S K Y L F G N F L T U

Only two vowels.

I'm going to try and see if anything else comes from doing this. Anyone else see anything of value?

More on the persephone code

I've played around with it some more, and these are my conclusions:
I'm assuming that the number doesn't rotate. My answer is the same. My method is just a refinement of the technique of solving it, and was deduced by working backwards.

So doing the standard decimal->ascii, reverse the string gives:
"Ibt vo ng GES.but Znl 1 Gevf vf fnsr sbu obj". Assuming the clear text is "Log in at THF.org May 1 This is safe for now"
I can work backwards to find the key, this gives:
Code:
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz :clear text
n   rstev  izob  ufg  j l  :key from code
This doesn't exactly match with rot13. If I insert rot 13 where it fits and doesn't conflict with existing letters I get:
Code:
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz :clear text
n   rstev  izob  ufg  j l  :key from code
n pqrst vwx z bcd fgh jklm :matches with rot13
nopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklm :rot 13 (for reference)
This give the key as:
Code:
n pqrstevwxizobcdufgh jklm :assuming rot13 in gaps
This leave two letter missing 'a' and 'y'. From here it becomes more of a guessing game. What I noticed about the out of place letters is that where 'e' is 'u' should be, where 'u' is 'e' should be, a pair. Where 'o' is 'a' should be and where 'i' is 'y' should be.

Now I have a nifty pattern I can potentially follow, if the e-u pair holds for the others I should be able to place 'y' where 'i' should be and 'a' for 'o'. Trying this pattern works, this reveals a potential full key of:
napqrstevwxizobcdufghyjklm :assuming rot13 and paired displacements
I've bolded the letters out of order with rot13 code.

How can I be sure that is the exact Key? I can't it's a best guess. However there is two more coincidences that helps strengthen my case: 1) You'll notice the out of place letters are vowels, 2) you'll notice they are in the order they occur in the alphabet. Another two patterns. So now I have three patterns that are consistent with each other. However this breaks the paired letter pattern, it's not wrong, it's just an artifact of the rot13 and half the vowels being in the first half of the alphabet, half in the second.

My conclusion: the Key was generated by Rot13 and the vowels re-arranged in alphabetical order. This was then used to encode the message as a Simple Substitution ciper

footnote: Why am I using 'Y' as a vowel? Well, because I can, oh and see here

I've found out about the mysterious rot18, it's here

"Using the following form you may apply various ROT13-based ?ciphers? to any desired string. The ROT13 algorithm (?Rotate by 13 places?) is a so-called Caesar cipher or shift cipher and replaces each letter with the letter thirteen places further along in the Latin alphabet. Since the Latin alphabet contains 26 letters, ?de-? and ?encryption? are based on the same constant key and thus two successive applications of ROT13 would restore the original text.

The ROT5 algorithm applies the same principle to numbers by shifting these five places. A combination of ROT5 and ROT13 ? therefore a transformation of both numbers and letters ? is represented in ROT18."

So it's possible the 1 gets rotated to 6.

(I have to say calling it rot18 is really stupid, and seems to come from a lack of understanding, but what can you do)

colin, i love you! But why couldn't you have solved this for me before I worked on it past 2am?

Because I was using the wrong string, which thankfully you corrected Smile but by then it was 1:30 Razz

Howdy again!

Firstly, those of us in the UK who watched the E4 broadcast are up to date with the states...

Secondly, it is now the 6th of may so if that ROT18 cipher is correct then we need to be logging in today... My question is where and how. I tried the Newsletter loggin again but it's still saying no new messages. Does any one have a clue as to where we need to be logging in?

It's really really unlikely that players will gain access to the websites Horde account. This will probably be used by in-game characters later on in the game.

Horde I take it is a real webmail platform? Somebody?

If so, a few things here are still fishy from my limited experience with those buggers: They generally customize. It doesn't say Welcome to Service Provider, it says Welcome to Your Company Name.

And the "powered by" icons always link to the company, in this case horde.com or .org whathaveyou. This one doesn't.

EDIT: Okay I should have checked the html code first. It does look quite legit

My bad.

Whoever runs the server may have not bothered with that part of the setup process, thinking it wouldn't affect the game.

[UPDATE] persephone.thehansofoundation.org

Of course, http://persephone.thehansofoundation.org comes from the person you chat with whenever you enter the password you get from calling 1-877-HANSORG, and pressing the "General" button. You get these numbers-
106 98 111 32 117 98 115 32 114 115 110 102 32 102 118 32 102 118 101 71 32 49 32 108 110 90 32 116 117 98 46 83 69 71 32 103 110 32 111 118 32 116 98 73

Now, the person who runs http://thelostexperience.com put these through an ROT13 translator. go there to see what he found out.
