[Recruitment] Looking for an indie-ARG staff

I am very interested in putting together a team for an indie ARG.

I work in IT and I have some decent tech skills, project management skills, writing skills, and lots of experience in interactive storytelling.

I have been considering an ARG for a great deal of time, but have been discouraged by the lack of funds. After having seen a few indie ARGs, I've considering going more in that approach.

Now with the official Lost ARG going, I must say I am a little disappointed. Like many ARGs, it is largely a hunt for passwords with little in the way of real immersion. (Admittedly there are some stories that early ARGs like Majestic were too immersive and freaked people out. However, at the time no one knew what to expect, and ARGs are more common now).

We will be extremely upfront about the unofficial nature of the game, and yet I believe the appeal may be stronger than the real Lost Experience.

The key I believe is feeling like you are part of the game. There should be different groups and factions interacting with different groups of players.

Like some of the viral marketing campaign games, perhaps there should even be teams working together, and an emphasis on recruiting other players for the game. I was even considering directly contacting a sampling of people we know, or known active ARG players via an anonymous email account with a lead-in to the game, giving a very personal feel for entering them to the virtual metaverse.

Different players should receive different, and at times conflicting pieces of the story. Players should have an opportunity to play roles in said story. People need to be able to write emails, interact in chats, and such from time to time with the game. Furthermore, the puzzles need to be top notch.

One of the goals would be to create a game that exists in the Lost universe, but does not seek to replace the official Lost Experience. While that game focuses on discovering details on The Hanso Foundation, we will seek to tell a compelling story that compliments Lost. We may implement new information that arises in the Lost ARG, Podcasts or show to stay consistent within the milleu but our story will be our own.

Do you have any interest in lending your talents to such an endeavor? If so, please email me at enderandrew at GMAIL dot COM

At the moment, I own a measly own domain name, but have a very good hosting account (with several gigs of bandwidth per day). I am willing to invest some money myself into hosting, but I am also hoping that we might be able to cooperate with existing Lost fansites that somewhat already try to enter themselves into the Lost ARG universe (like the various Widmore and Oceanic websites).

If this does take off, there will be no public discussion of the design or plot of the game. Those committed to the project will discuss, plan and execute the project via a private online collaberation site. I do not want to take away the element of surprise away from potential players.

As Lost is growing in fandom in many countries, I am especially interested in any multilingual PMs who might be able to mirror/translate the game in other languages.

Thank you, and namaste!

I highly respect fan fiction and the idiology it represents. Although in this case, i think that the premice of basing a fan fic ARG on Lost is fundementally flawed. (imo) a majority of the appeal of Lost (both program & ARG) is caused by the mystique that surrounds it; -the fact that the audience never truely knows what's going on/what'll happen next/what the entire concept is about! -So i'm having trouble in seeing how one could base a fan fiction plot of any significance upon a story that one cannot fully understand. -Therefore i can't see how you could think a piece Lost fan fic could have more appeal than the real thing- (afterall the writers are the only people who have the foggyest as to what the concept of Lost is, if even they do!) I commend what you're trying to do, and I think you have some great ideas; and ones that you should consider using to create an ARG in its own right. I'm just concerned as to the viability of writing Lost fan fiction with any credibility. -This is just my humble opinion, feel free to dismiss.

Reply to Above ^^

Lost, as you say, is not fully understood, and the idea of a Lost Fan-fiction ARG is fundementally flawed, yet the fog surrounding the story of the show, brings up lots of oppertunitys to create a storyline out of that. Say you want to write a fan-fiction on Walt. Is he VERY special, or crazy? What is he? is he the original one that came to the island? so many subject you could write a successiful story of.

True words. However would anybody actually give a monkeys about a speculative fictional interpretation of a story that is already currently being told by the actual writers? Especially given that (in something like your Walt example) the progression of the true story would immediately render the fan fic inept. -And that (its sad to say) the majority of Lost fan concept speculation is unbearably cringe-worthy!
The only way i can see anything remotely of this sort working is if it has absolutely nothing to do with the island, known inhabitants & Hanso etc. ...in which case it would have little to do with Lost anyway!
