On a different note... did anyone notice that the left number went from around 3.00 to 22.00 in the last 30 minutes?

I have this distinct feeling that nothing's going to *happen* until the counter is broken.

This is a bad idea. Why? Because a week and a half ago the counter was at zero (down from about 15 or 16 when I first saw the page) and nothing happens. You can still enter the code when the left hand counter is at zero, and all it does is recycle through the series 0.03, 0.02, 0.01, 0.00, 0.03, 0.02 etc.

New image! i3 is now available.

plus, 227664 doesn't seem to be resetting the counter anymore.

Also, update on progress.txt:

i0 [1] 1.00 Y 18-May-2006 08:42 U 10364
i1 [1] 2.00 Y 23-May-2006 01:52 U 10364
i2 [1] 3.00 y 23-May-2006 20:25 U 10497
i3 [1] 0.50 N

holy crap, that's me! Not that I actually figured out the message in i2... unless this is confirmation that there isn't one...I clearly posted too ambiguously.

Looks like a partial break (lower case y), which means you're on the money. I think the new image will help us turn that y into a Y. And it seems it's more likely it's a confirmation that there is a message, that it's plain text, and that it can be found by rearranging the letters.

I think it's pretty clear that the PM is a native English speaker (from New Zealand, and check out the slashdot posts), and that the message is cryptic because the letters needed to be carefully arranged.

While I can't yet make much sense of i3.gif, the plaintext is almost certainly in English, and a letter in the cyphertext is actually that letter in the plaintext. Here's the frequency analysis:
Code:
        X
        X
    X   X
    X   X
    X   X
    X   X
    X   X
   XX   X    X      X
   XX   X    X      X
X  XX   X   XX      X
X  XX   X   XX      X
X  XX  XX  XXXX   XXX X
X  XX  XX  XXXX   XXX X
XXXXXXXXX  XXXX  XXXX X
XXXXXXXXX  XXXX  XXXX X
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

and here's the standard English frequencies:
Code:
    X
    X
    X
    X
    X              X
X   X   X    XX    X
X   X  XX    XX  XXX
X   X  XX    XX  XXX
X  XX  XX  X XX  XXX
X XXX  XX  X XX  XXXX
XXXXXXXXX  XXXXX XXXX X X
XXXXXXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXX X
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

So don't waste time ROT13ing or caesering it.

Also of interest is the fact that the code now takes the integer part of the top-left count off the top-left count (not just 1).

I just solved i3.gif

It's solved by moving the columns up until the tops of the blue bars match. The message is:

Code:

HIMMUSTB
EANSWERE
DWITHCLU
EFOUNDIN
I2GIFEND

I solved i2.gif!

Everything we've done so far has dealt with columns (of 5px), so I focused on that.
There are 7 frames, with 6 columns. After many attempts at crazy things my thoughts wandered back to the ever present 227664. So, if you take the 1st column of letters from frame 2, the 2nd column from frame 2, the 3rd column from frame 7 ( and so on...) you get
Code:
HEISTH
ECODEO
NSLASH
DOT

There is in fact a user named TheCode on slashdot, but there doesn't seem to be anything interesting about him.

On a side note, I think this game has progressed enough that a chat room might be fun, so I've created #xccr on chat-solutions. If you don't have an IRC client handy you can use the unfiction chat applet at http://www.unfiction.com/chat/ to come by and visit!

Very nice work there, Stormalong & Domster.
Looks like your progress has not gone unnoticed Wink
Code:
i0   [1]   1.00   Y   18-May-2006 08:42   U   10364
i1   [1]   2.00   Y   23-May-2006 01:52   U   10364
i2   [1]   2.50   Y   24-May-2006 01:38   U   800
i3   [1]   0.50   Y   24-May-2006 00:06   U   10364

Actually, there is also happens to be a user on slashdot called 227664. In the user info, there is a small snippet of clue:
Code:
227664
  (email not shown publicly)
http://xccr.com/
I am not him.
Him = Slashdot(KB328894(readme.txt));

Okay. More info before I go to bed concerning:
Code:
Him = Slashdot(KB328894(readme.txt));

KB328894 is a Microsoft knowledgbase article concerning the first character of each line being clipped off in a print job.

If you take the first letter of each line of readme.txt you get "tfeyet" which is another valid user on slashdot. So we get dropped another clue in his info:
Code:
tfeyet (974444)
tfeyet
  (email not shown publicly)
http://xccr.com/
My UID is the answer.
But what about 422401216364
So, its possible that tfeyet is the "him" we're looking for somehow...

Okay, so I got distracted from going to bed...

Just recently a "fan" has been added to the profile of slashdot user 227664. This user 113389363 has this to say in his profile:
Code:
113389363 (976541)
113389363
  (email not shown publicly)
I am not even supposed to exist, but it has been too long and he is not happy.
This will bypass i2.

Find my buddy for further instruction.

So is there something about i2 still needing solving yet?

EDIT: tamerlane beat me to it...

EDIT: The part about finding his buddy kind of set me off. After a quick google, "113389363" is a prime number. So I initially thought that the 'buddy' had something to do with the number 1. None of the users I found had any relation to the game that I could see.

I thought that the buddy of a prime number would be its twin - of course, 113389363 isn't a twin prime. It's not a cousin prime either. It is, however, not just a sexy prime, but a double sexy prime!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexy_prime

The sequence is 113389357, 113389363, 113389369. Users don't exist for the other two numbers on slashdot, so it's of questionable merit. I also checked, and none of the numbers seem to be factors of the others.
