[Trout Free Zone] General Questions - Ask & Answer Here

What do you guys mean exactly when you say.. a site is in the "game"

edit: Renamed thread to a Trout Free Zone.

Questioners: Please feel free to use this thread to ask general questions you have about the Experience that don't seem to fit into any of the other threads. Or to ask specific questions about problems you are having that you feel you have not received a satisfactory answer to in previous posts.

Answerers: I've revoked your fishing licenses in this thread so no claiming you found some trout. If you believe an answer has been previously given, please be kind and LINK to the answer and/or quote what the answer was.

Thanks!
Rowan

An "in-game" site is a site where you can interact with the characters or events that are happening in the game. Take this site for instance, we are talking about the Lost Alternate Reality Game here, but because there is no way to interact with any game characters here this site is not in-game. There are several fansites that will try to emulate the game for their own purposes, but without any real connection from an in-game site, they will still be considered a non in-game site. As of right now, http://www.thehansofoundation.org is the only in-game site.

-It might not be a bad idea to make this thread a trout-free question area considering there are so many here new to the forum.

In-game sites are websites that are set up and operated by the people who are running the game; they're officially a part of the game. They're written from the perspectives of fictional characters and organizations, basically presenting a fictional world and story as if it were real.

A major problem is that often, other sites will be set up by people who have nothing to do with the running of the game. These unofficial other sites may be run-of-the-mill "fan sites" or they may be set up as hoaxes in an attempt to fool people into thinking that they're part of the game.

The problem is that it can be difficult to distinguish the "real", official, in-game sites from the unofficials, fakes, hoaxes, fan sites, tribute sites, parodies, etc. A major task is to seperate and classify sites properly, or else our attempts at solving the mysteries of an ARG can be contaminated with bad information.

Don't forget, Out of Game sites can just be sites that have nothing to do with the game, they just happen to look similar or such.

I feel like I missed this or something, but...

What's the deal with the Bermuda Triangle Formula on the Hanso site?

When was this puzzle solved? Was missing organs the answer? We don't know what that means yet, right?

Thanks!

There wasn't really a solve on an equation. They just took the numbers that were posted and changed them to their corresponding alphabetical letters.
1=A (and so on)
And yes, the answer to that was "missing organs" and we still have not found a use for the solve yet.

Apparently the Channel 4 site has been updated, not sure how much this ties into the ARG, but seeing how the original press release was from Channel 4 it may. However it could just be a bit of fun and unrelated.

http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/L/lost/untold.html

There is a Hanso letter on the main page to the bottom left of the passenger list. Also if you look at Charlies area there is a link to driveshaft. The Drive Shaft site looks a bit dodgy but seeing how C4 are endorsing it, it could be official.

http://www.driveshaftband.com/index.html

Make of it what you will... Put this here so people could scrutinise it a bit before giving it a thread that may be unneeded.

Where to post?

I am new to ARGs and want to follow etiquette.

Is it bad practice to post a comment/question in multiple threads?

When posting in a forum titled U.S. Season 2 Spoilers, should I use spoiler tags?

If something I post is trouted, should I delete my post?

where to begin?

I got tipped off to this ARG during the airing of LOST on may 10th. I happened to catch a Hanso foundation commercial touting the sublymonal.com addy. Happily and excitedly I popped over and found the "Code" and the hanso website. Now after reading through a number of pages of posts here I can't seem to find the launch point anywhere and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Primarily I am looking for the page which has the 'password' that persephone is asking for on the newsletter page. I've spoiled the answer for myself, but I'd still like to know where it came from. Also, as I said, I'd be very interested in having the launch point so I can puzzle through some of this stuff myself without having to read a bunch of spoilers to get up to speed. Many thanks in advance,

NH

The password is obtained from the phone number presented in the TV adverts.

If you want a good timeline of all the events that have happened to date try:

Unfiction is great for ongoing discussion but can be a nightmare when coming in after a couple of weeks and trying to find out what happened and in what order... Very Happy

community traditions

Welcome to the Unforums. There is general nettiquette plus the little quirks that make our community special. Thank you for asking (and using) both. We're gonna get along just fine.

Yes. We're a fairly obsessive group, and most of us read or skim every thread in the forums of interest to us as individuals. Chances are good that several people will see your question, no matter where it is posted. Don't panic if you do not see an answer within 24 hours. It's a message board, not a chat server. We're also all on different work schedules, different time zones, and different dial-up speeds (*gasp*).

We're still feeling out this issue, but I (as moderator and a fan of the show) request that you still use spoiler tags around references to future episode -- this includes the aired previews. Of course, it would be super polite to tag ALL season 2 content with a spoiler, even within the USA threads.

Nope. We like having a record (and we won't use it against you). Plus, if there are replies after your post, how silly do they look if there is nothing for them to reply to?

Other forums may have different "rules" and "manners", but this is what works best for us. And again, welcome, and thanks for asking.

I'll have to disagree with you there, Reason. tle.com gets details wrong constantly. I find that LostPedia is a much more reliable source. It gets edited for accuracy much more frequently.

Fair point Smile I personally check both, I suppose it was just the first one that came to mind Wink

Oh and timeline is here.

Missing Organs

I've tried to catch up with all the threads in the last couple of hours...(and, as a result, I am hoping that this entire game won't turn out to be shameless commercials for soft drinks and books - like, as someone so aptly pointed out, the infamous "Drink your Ovaltine" secret msg from "A Christmas Story" - too funny) .... but I digress... Rolling Eyes

What I am wondering is, I haven't noticed any mention of a solve on the "missing organs" clue. Nothing came up on a search. What's the general opinion - is this a dead end, or should I be putting on my thinking cap and revisiting this?
