[UPDATE] The Path of Least time. Monday 15th May 2006

A Charged Silence

I reached Ryefield on Saturday afternoon and before heading to my hotel, I immediately talked to the station staff. Just because the Missing Person's system is offline on Tuesday doesn't mean that everyone suddenly becomes incapable of recognising a face. Borrowing an idea that someone emailed me, I had the staff display images of Miranda on the walls and banners around the station. It's not something that I can do for the entire town - I'd never be able to get permission in time - but it might be enough to slow her down, or even stop her, when she tries to get to the station.
My next stop was the pharmacist. The owner seemed dubious about my claims that Miranda was dangerous and should be refused Oxxypro, but in the end he agreed to be particularly careful about handing out the medicine. That should be enough to stop her from getting hold of it - any serious inspection of her prescription would show that it's fake.
Before heading to the hotel, I dropped in to visit a doctor I'd made an appointment with while on the train. She took a careful look at my leg, giving it a quick MRI scan, and pronounced herself astonished at the speed of my recovery. After a little thought, I told her about the 'mystery cream' from Miranda, which many of you have been concerned about. Thankfully she said she'd heard of it before (it was designed specifically for athletes) and there didn't seem to be anything wrong with it. She gave me the usual warnings of not putting too much strain on the ankle, but I gathered that I would be able to run on it without much trouble in only a couple of days.
Finally, I went to my hotel, and lay down. There was nothing else I could prepare for. I looked up at the ceiling, and wondered what I was doing so far from home, looking for someone who tried to kill me. The room was quiet, but with a charged silence.

Hmm. Less hatstand than last time, certainly. And it looks like he's listening to us still...
Let's hope he catches her tomorrow. And doesn't get deadded.

Does anyone think it's worth trying to get Violet back on the case. I know she's worried about him and we may be able to convince her to go and help. I just can't decide if it would be good or not.

If he catches her, I wonder what sort of information could she (or would she) divulge? What does she or her organisation know about the Granier diary that would lead them to kill Cymbalisty in such a byzantine fashion? And who is she working for?
If she escapes, what would Kurt et al's next step be? Return to the diary and try to decipher the last page? The transport hub at Ryefield suggests that if she slips the net here, she's pretty much gone for good.
If she dies trying to escape (or seems to have been killed), will there be any further clues we could follow to tell us why or on whose orders she murdered Cymbalisty? Some sort of information upon her person, maybe - perhaps the name of a contact or something?
If Kurt is killed or captured, where would that leave the CRT?
Gah, I'm nearly as impatient (and dread-filled) as Kurt!

Kurt and Miranda I really think Miranda is going to die in the next few days. She may possibly leave a cryptic clue to her relationship with the diary and ultimately the cube. Kurt will take a sabbatical to do some more soul searching and Violet will take over the case. Just some of my innermost thoughts!!

As long as Rational Kurt is back in action (if only with ideas we gave him), then I'm hopeful. He has a good web set up; people are looking for Miranda, ready to deny her the medicine, and checked both his leg condition and the "Cream of Wonder". And he's stopped having loony-bir dialogues with "Miranda" in his head (or at least being so ovgert about them to post them in his blog), so I think he's getting a grip.
If the real Kurt's back in action by tomorrow, the results look more than promising.

I'm just wondering what Kurt is going to do if he does catch her. I guess he must have some sort of plan to restrain or incapacitate her. It just seems like it would be kind of strange carrying someone that is either tied up or unconcious through a city. I doubt Miranda would be willing to give up any information on the spot, or that Kurt would let her go after he's caught her.

I agree with Al Green.
I think getting Violet to Ryefield is critically important. I don't see Kurt pulling this off on this own. And this might be the last chance to stop Miranda.
So I e-mailed Violet to see if she might reconsider.

I want to know what he put on those signs. If they said something to the effect of "My girlfriend I running away. I need her back" "Notify me if you see her" or "Don't let her on the train." That would be real scary. All the train workers know is that a women is trying to distance her self from her boyfriend. If the station manger agrees to help Kurt capture his woman with no court or police order that would be messed up.
With all the global search surveillance cameras Perplex City is turning into a scary place. And I though the NSA wire tapping here in America was bad.

Doesnt sound any worse than the cctv you see or even dont see all over the place nowadays. If you look carefully there are cameras everywhere in towns and cities that arent immediately obvious.

Maybe Kurt is going to flip out and the next update will be about how he chased her down the railway line, tackled her to the ground and held her there while the train came. Or maybe he'll chase her into the ruins and batter her to death with an ancient stone!
