[False information] New 'Bees' ARG?

Some people in the games industry have been receiving an email to this site:

http://www.xvicba.com.br/

A feww think it may be related to the new Halo game. Just thought i'd post it here and see what the experts think.

See further posts - this is not a game. Seriously. - Addle

This certainly appears to deal with Brazilian apiculture and some kind of convention celebrating 50 years of Africanized bees.

Delicious Portuguese. But why would one celebrate Africanized bees? Mysterious.

People in the *games* industry? Huh. Weird.

From what I can tell, that's the site belonging to the 16th Brazilian Apiculture Congress (or the 16th Congress on Brazilian Apiculture, not sure - probaby the latter if you look at the URL, xvicba = XVI (16) CBA)), due to take place on May 22-25, 2006. It'll have a central theme focused on "50 Years of Africanised Bees". There's a site at http://www.beesfordevelopment.org/ which goes into more detail into the sort of thing I think it's talking about.

It doesn't seem to be a new event. In 2004 it apparently took place in Rio Grande do Norte, and in 1994 it took place in Goiás, Brazil.

This lot was found with a load of Google searches, not because I know any Brazilian myself. Smile

Again, I doubt it. I see us getting to the point where ANYTHING related to bees will show up in the news, and a thousand people cry out, "ILB2!!!"

16th annual Beekeepers conference. As in People who keep Bees for a living. Africanized bees were introduced into the genetic makeup to try to boost honey production, once upon a time because they produce a lot more honey than regular bees. They are a lot more aggressive. Hybridization didn't help matters, and when some got loose they set up shop and started spreading.

One of the conference topics for discussion 50 years of Africanization.

At least that is the jist that I get with my High School/College Spanish from 20 years ago.

You do know that people keep bees don't you? For argiculture? They are an important part of pollinization of plants, specifically with fruit crops and seed/nut production.

But here, a free honey sample for you...

Is the sarcasm really necessary? The answer to the original question is "no". Several people have already supplied that answer. Nobody is arguing with them. No wonder people worry about UF.

ARGiculture! So it must be ILB2! Razz

Seriously, though, I don't see anyone other than the original poster saying this is an ARG. Looks like everybody was disputing it.

To repeat, it's not ILB2. In fact, it isn't even an ARG.

Long time lurker, but thought this was worth mentioning.

In Halo lore, and the new trailer debuting at E3, one of the key locations is called New Mombassa. It is believed to be located in Africa. Here is a quote from a weekly Bungie Update addressing questions about the trailer:

:snip:
xTr1GGeR HaPPYx asks,
I'm guessing those ruins in the back are Old New Mombasa, so, whereabouts is the Chief and this Forerunner structure?

(Bungie's reply)
That is indeed the ruins of New Mombasa. The artifact and the Chief are where they appear to be, on the desert outskirts of New Mombasa, and many miles inland. The mountain behind him is Kilimanjaro.
:snip:

Full text is at : http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?link=weeklyupdatemay1206

Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania. Again, just throwing this out there. Whether it means anything at all, I cannot say.

Edit: Forgot one thing - the dates for the conference are May 22-25, 2006. Not that means anything either, but the event has not started yet...

Cheers,
Dano
