another update, another bump, another announcement of progress.

OpenUru.org now has a shard running on MOSS, and has opened it to the public for beta testing. They're calling it the Minkata Shard, as it is a giant sandbox, but it contains all of the Uru ages.

Refer to the thread below for history, status, and other details.

Bumping with the latest updates.
The official MOULa server has been updated to software build #905, which includes several bug fixes and other enhancements. For a complete list, refer to this announcement

As they say elsewhere:
Quote:
It has been a while since there has been a version update... so if you are having any problems with the patcher hanging, be sure to run the launcher as administrator as well as re-allowing UruLauncher.exe to access the internet through your firewall.

Cyan thanks the OpenUru Minkata Test Shard for assisting in the development and launch of these fixes. OpenUru invites you to join them this weekend as they stress-test their own servers. Join me!

(above was Feb.14, adding Feb.26, not worth a new-post bump)
Another team has set up another shard, based on their own modifications to the open source platform. They call it the Gehn shard. More info at the Guild of Writers subforum

So glad they fixed the Minkata sparklie! I have the game downloaded to my new PC at home, so I should make some time to get all of my calendar stones sometime soon.

In other news, a post on the Myst forum caught my eye this week. MagiQuest Online, the game which Cyan made for Creative Kingdoms's MagiQuest franchise, is ending. The gameplay felt very much to me like a kiddie version of Uru, using repurposed avatars and navigation in a new environment. I bought the first chapter in support of Cyan's ongoing business, and I will miss having another place to explore.

from the official announcement:
Quote:
...we have decided to discontinue MagiQuest Online on December 31, 2012. This decision was not made lightly, but was determined to be the best plan of action after much investigation.

For those Magi who have not yet had a chance to experience the magic of MagiQuest Online, the game will remain available on the MagiQuest website and at select MagiQuest locations until October 29, 2012.

For existing Magi, we invite you to return and enjoy MagiQuest Online until the game shuts down on December 31, 2012.

Cyan to create a new game

It's been more than a year, so this doesn't count as a double-post. *wink*

For anyone who follows this thread but hasn't heard yet: Cyan is running a campaign on Kickstarter to raise funds for the production of a new game.

Not another MYST sequel, not another Riven, not even an extension of URU, but by the same great minds in the same great tradition of great games. I'm in!

And, it'll be running on UE4!

Hey, URU peoples. Still looking for the next wave in remakes and reboots of our beloved cavern? Follow the developments of the DIRT project.

http://dirturulive.tumblr.com/
Quote:
DIRT: Uru Live is a reboot of Cyan World's MMOG Myst Online: Uru Live. It is a synthesis of Cyan's abandoned single game concept DIRT ("D'ni In Real Time") and their MMOG. In this case, DIRT: Uru Live literally comes to mean "D'ni In Real Time: You Are You Live".

Starting Over

Every few months, I return here with news for the loyal few who remember URU.

Well, if you ever thought about giving it a try, now is a good time to start. The data vault was wiped, and EVERYONE must start over, from the beginning.

See http://www.mystonline.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=411545#p411545 for details.

Oh, and after the annual Mysterium gathering, an announcement was made about fan content being introduced into the game on the official shard. That might be a year away in the future, but the promise of new content will finally be realized. (I need to find that link with the details)

hey there. I did the barest minimum to confirm that I still had the same user name, created my avatar, and fetched my KI. I haven't had the energy to go back and redo the Cleft and all the basic ages again, let alone finish the other ages that I never seem to complete. I've heard one can reach K'veer in the end, but there are marker quests that my avatar can never find.

Anyway, here's the thread where the announcement about fan-made content is discussed, with a demo video.

almost a year since my last update post, and we're still waiting to see new content added to the official game server. Fan-made content continues to thrive on private servers.

The big news comes from behind the curtain, where an original Cyan employee has just revealed a health scare. He's doing well enough to inject humor in his topic title:
RAWA v2.0 - upgrade in progress

Fans are posting plenty of encouragement in another thread. There was also a recent outpouring on Twitter with the #mystmemories hashtag.

Meanwhile, the launch of Obduction has been delayed. Attendees at this summer's Mysterium convention were given a top secret sneak preview, but no release date has yet been announced. That's all the news for now.

I don't know if anyone here played Uru enough to have run into a player named Firesign3000, but he recently passed away from cancer.

He was a huge fan of Cyan, and I remember spending countless hours traveling through the Ages doing marker missions with him, searching for calendar sparklies, and having dance parties in the main cavern.

I'm gonna miss him lots.

kickstarter for ZED by Chuck Carter

Signal-boost for a game which might be of interest to people in this forum and anyone who enjoys MYST-like games.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1368459285/zed

You've seen Chuck Carter's artwork in MYST and Babylon 5 and a bunch of other games and movies. Now he's created a game with puzzles mechanics and environment built on the Unreal Engine 4.

You can watch someone play the artistic preview/demo at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-8vlMcJFNI

or you can download the demo and play it for yourself.
http://www.eagregames.com/download/

A few personal words on the demo: The file took 20 minutes to download and several tries to complete, even on good broadband, so it's best to hit their server off-peak hours. The beginning area of the game taxed my older computer's render abilities, but playing it in a reduced window helped immensely. It's very pretty to look at, and the pathways beg to be explored further. The puzzles seem simple at this point, just meant to show off the art style, but they are integrated into the world realistically and will certainly grow in complexity.

This campaign is coming down to the wire -- with only 2 days remaining, they still need around $3,000 to reach their goal. New donations at the $100 (or more?) level are being matched by another donor, too!
