Free Gametap!

Gametap has just announced a new pay-model which is FREE to use.

Basically, you just have to create an account and you have access to the games. But there's a catch. First, you will only be able to access a certain portion of the library... around 30 titles at a time. And the games that you will have access to will periodically change. For example, the 30 games I have access to now that are free are only up until the 4th.

URU Live is up now, so people who haven't had money or time to play have a few days left of free play! Get all your puzzle solving in now!

Also up now are a few other good games... Sam & Max Episode 1 is up, and so is the Recent Tomb Raider: Legends. There are also a bunch of classics like Joust, Robotron, etc.... You'd be paying a lot for these if you went on XBLA. Free stuff is always good!

That's pretty freaking cool!

Please do take advantage of this with regards to UruLive, as Minkata is a new Age they've just released, and personally, I think it's brilliant and beautiful.

If anyone needs any more ribbing to at least try out the free Gametap, look no further. Psychonauts is on the service now!

Best. Game. EVER! If I didn't already own 3 copies of this game (PS2, XBOX and PC... yes, I have OCD when it comes to Psychonauts) I'd literally get Gametap just to play.

And people who are playing Uru, put it down for a bit and download this one. It's hilarious, fun, and very, very addicting. Listen or I'll use my telekinesis on you.

Don't worry, I'll even link you to the site you lazy bastards. Very Happy

Bumping to point out that Episode 6 ("A New Light") came out today.

Quote:
A New Light (begins on Saturday June 23)
Power is shifting and new leaders begin to emerge while those from the past begin to fade. Amidst all the chaos, the Age of Er'Cana is released and Explorers are asked to help feed the darkening lake. Meanwhile, new information is revealed and more begin to fear the coming war.

Er'Cana features a vast landscape with hours of unique gameplay that can be played single player or with friends.

Havn't got a chance to check it out yet, still updating...

Hopefully there was a bit of optimization so that I can get around in Minkata at more than 5 FPS...

EDIT: Minkata still hates me for some reason.

But, what's new:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The initial Great Zero calibration seems to be done, and they're going to be having a party tomorrow afternoon as they fire up the next phase.

The Watcher's Sanctuary (the Pub) is now open. Accessible from the Nexus. Havn't been in there yet, since there's over 100 people there right now (max capacity 5000), and kinda tired...

If you've completed the initial GZ marker quest, you can now create your own missions to assign to other players. I need to get off my duff and finish the original one still, though.

ack! spoilers! (if i were a mod in this forum, i would edit that post and hide a few bits, not all of it, but then I'd have to read it to know what to tag, and I haven't read beyond the first paragraph above, just in case)

I try to experience the updates as they are given to me by the game. I know what is new from the GameTap loading screen, and when I enter the game I have my KI mail from the DRC. Beyond that, I try to avoid knowing what I will find when I visit those areas. Last night, I tried getting into the one new city area from the Nexus, and let it try until 2am before deciding the server was hung. Maybe today... but not around 4pm during their live event!

For those not aware of it, www.uruobsession.com is a great resource with a great forum and their Cavern Today threads about daily updates, especially related to the ongoing story.

I am torn about spoilerizing PMAvers' post, because while I can understand only wanting to get those sorts of updates from the game environment itself, they are still fairly general pieces of information. Makes me wonder if perhaps we should create a separate Uru Updates thread that contains unspoilered update/episodic content and discussion.

A separate update thread would mean you can choose to avoid that discussion until you've well and truly gotten what you wanted from your own trip to the Cavern after an event or Age release happens.

cather, you want to start that thread?

I also second the recommendation of UruObsession. It's a great resource for walkthroughs, and the Cavern Today posts can be invaluable when there's conversations with NPCs and confusion over changes in the City.

to be honest, I just assumed that all game-specific talk would take place on a game-specific forum, like Uru Obsession or the official Myst Online site. I didn't want to have to avoid touching base with my unfiction friends here. We've done well so far by using this as a general "howdy" place, to exchange KI numbers, and to spread the word to others about Uru and other GameTap offerings.

I personally won't start a spoiler/updates thread here, because this isn't where I talk about in-game details. Yours is a good suggestion, too, to have a separately tagged [update] thread if someone else wants to start one; i'll know to avoid it entirely, thanks. I was only suggesting that the use of spoiler tags are a way of having both in one thread, if that's what people want to do.

No worries, I went ahead and just red-blocked the section anyway myself.

Spacebass mentioned earlier in this thread the subject of whether Uru is an ARG or not. I wanted to fFollow up with some spice of what the game is like, and how it behaves in relationship to the real world. Think ARG in a similar way as Perplex City.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A person (Who is written and generally controlled by an actor of some sort) named Nick White happened by one of the local neighborhoods a day or so ago, and had a nice long chat with players. This happens with some regularity. The subject of conversation was Douglas Sharper apparently waging war against a race called the Bahro. Among the many things discussed were these bits:

Sarah: The D'ni had no powers that humans haven't proven they can use, and they had no trouble with the Bahro.
Nick White: The D'ni weren't dealing with the same Bahro we are.
Serephina: How are they different?
Nick White: You guys are the ones that always bring up Myst V - the game. I think that's pretty accurate.
Yellowdog: Remember the Bahro WERE peacfull untill WE started freeing a Certain group of them
Nick White: Cyan is usually pretty accurate with their depictions.

Dig that? As fFar as in game character's know, Cyan is a company which has made some nice games about the D'ni civilization. But now in Uru, we are mucking up this delicate ecosystem. Coincidentally, where this will all lead is a complete mystery as of now, but things are getting a bit gritty. There were some mysterious deaths in the caverns just recently, and fFoul play is suspected.

So, short answer, yes it's a dynamic game in which players can change the plot, or at least have a hand in shaping the plot, in some small ways. Cheers Smile

I still think it's staying (for the moment) within the bounds of MMO/RPG/LARP-style playing.

Having Cyan be in-game is interesting, and comes really close to just bustin' out all over with alternate reality elements blurring with real life, but it's still fairly self-contained in gameplay.

Unless you're in the Cavern actually playing the MMOG itself, there are (currently) *no* other game elements that someone can encounter unless they are in that specific Gametap-constrained environment. There are two "official" forums where discussion and backstory is fleshed out a bit, but again, they're tied directly to the game environment.

I could see the game heading that way, if they could just stop making the Explorers nervous about the DRC shutting everything down again. Razz

By official forums, you mean the player forums? I'm not sure what you mean by them being tied to GameTap.

Then there is the website of The D'ni Restoration Council fully accessible from the web external to the game environment. The DRC exists "on surface" not "in Cavern". I think I used that argument when we first tried calling this an ARG. I've since backed off, as we no longer receive emails (only KI-mails within the Cavern) and no one is going to be getting a package in the mail. They do maintain the illusion that these people exist outside of D'ni, but it's a thin veil of illusion.

The DRC forums still acknowledge their game-ness in their OOC section, but yeah, that's about as close as it seems to get, in terms of there being Uru events outside of the Cavern.

I dunno. I'm torn. The DRC site is still pretty self-contained, and controlled by Cyan, ultimately.

I forgot to add: I mean that the "official" forums (at mystonline.com) have a banner that reflects its connection to Gametap, to a game entity. It is purely a game-world site, as is the DRC site, with varying degrees of OOC talk.

I believe it's shaky ground like this which Adrian Hon was referring to some while back when he said he didn't like the term, or even the idea, of ARGs. I was pretty shocked when he said it, because here is one of the lead developers of the longest running game in history, essentially saying he doesnt like what he does. But no, that's not it at all. I think he was saying it's so easy to get tied up in the meaning of what exactly an ARG is that you lose fFocus on the important points: the interactive telling of an enjoyable experience.

If it has a webpage but no phone calls, is it an ARG? If there are phone calls but no webpage is it an ARG? If it has phone calls, webpages, a paycheck, and people dropping by your house every other thursday, is it an ARG? If bandied about enough, the term can be a right tabernacle.

I see what you mean, krystyn, about Uru existing almost entirely in cavern. You're quite right, and this is a very good point. I'll steer clear of labels and simply go with "yes, it's interactive." Actually...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
seeing now, this week, the "Path of The Shell" ages beginning to surface, I think it's possible we are now seeing what Cyan had in mind all along, fFrom years back. the PotS expansion was released in a sort of hurried, packaged one-off fFashion; but now they fFinally have the time to do it right, they are slowly unveiling in pieces, with plot and substance, as they had wanted to do all along.

I guess the distinction, for me, in this particular instance, is that I have to actively seek out a specific gamespace that only deals *with that* gamespace, in order to play or experience the reality of that universe.

But yeah, I am totally hopeful that someone will take the reins on player-created content, which obviously has some nice RL possibilities.
