[UPDATE] Quirky Acuity, May 18th

I've found something interesting

So, I had this amazing brainwave yesterday and decided to look up all Miranda's library borrowings and information requests for the past few months. This information isn't even particularly hard to find - you just have to be a member of library staff - and I'd almost expected that she'd have deleted it all. Which, she had. The record was blank. But, then, another astounding brainwave (two in one day - must be all the exercise I've been getting lately). For some holdings there are still, yes, still in this day and age, paper-based records. Books which are more than 100 years old have to be signed out using an actual pen and paper.

So instead of going out to poker last night, I spent several hours combing through the sign-out logbooks from various areas of the library. Luckily, they're not too enormous - most of the books which are set for graduate work are available as key downloads, so there were only, oh, 7,000 entries or so to go through. Anyway, I struck paydirt. Miranda has not, as I anticipated, been perusing books on "1001 exciting ways to break the heart of a decent and honorable person" or, indeed, "Murdering your boss: legal issues to bear in mind" but instead seems to have been interested in local history of some of the regions around Perplex City. She's recently looked at books about the Coram Caves, north-west of the city, the old Silburn-Griggs mines to the south-west and the Dedant ridge, due south of here. I've called up all the books she's looked at, but I haven't sent a message to Kurt yet - don't want to get his hopes up. Still, I'm hoping to have something worthwhile to report sometime soon.

So, it will be the Silburn-Griggs mines, right?

[TINAG]Could MC be making a funny reference to our "101 ways to lure (add your fictional favorite character here)" threads?[/TINAG]

I hope so! But it is too much of a coincidence. Wink

OK...here's what I think.

Assuming the rail map is reasonably proportional, Ryfield is just South of West from Perplex City. Vastage (on the end of the purple train route) is almost due south of Ryfield. Miranda 'disembarked' from the train half way between the two towns, just a little North of South West from Perlex City.

Miranda set of due West from the train and, as far as we know, is still heading that way. So... Silburn-Griggs mines looks like the only possibility.

it's a fact MC monitor the boards and the chat room, theres lots of precedent.

like the time it said on the ascendancy point page (which i found Smile ) that the phone lines were at 7 GMT and we were discussing the repercussions of Mc having meant BST and us getting confused... and then it got changed to BST Very Happy

What are the chances that they're the same mines that featured in Graniers diary? Question

I'd say yes, I think that he is reffering to the mines that Violet found. So I'd say e-mail Kurt/Violet and tell her the news!

Maybe the Third Power's base is situated there! This could be a huge breakthrough!

That would presumably mean that Miranda knows what the last page of the diary says, and is following it to these mines or wherever...

Speculation: if she's wanting to recover an artifact or knowledge referred to in the diary, then is she a member of the Third Power? I'd say not in that case, because one would assume they would already know the contents of the diary, given that it's been on display in the museum for an unknown length of time, and so would have long since moved to recover whatever is there.

Even if they were awaiting an accurate translation of the diary, which has only relatively recently been done by Cymbalisty, surely they would already have mobilised other operatives to that point...? Or was Miranda always supposed to go there herself?

A 'head-scratchy' emoticon would be appropriate at this point, I feel.

Given the hoops we had to jump through to get Violet and Cymbalisty access to the diary in the first place... I mean, while 3P presumably has all kinds of operatives with various skills, we were lucky in the authordom thing because we could cash in on Perplexian fascination with us. Maybe they couldn't get access?

Or maybe they simply took the chance when we made it available, and hadn't considered it before hand?

These mines rings a bell...catacombs.

In her blog on 18th May 2005, a year ago to the very day, Violet mentions these catacombs.

Quote:
I've been down there; there's an entrance underneath my dad's "official Academy residence". We were never allowed down there alone of course, but when Scarlett and I were little, and we nagged him enough, sometimes he'd take us for a walk. And (be jealous, be very jealous) not just the bits they show the tourists, but some other places too. Nothing terribly mysterious, but more of those strange mosaics on the ceilings (how did they get up there? Why those symbols? Weird).

According to Wiki.
Quote:
The Perplex City catacombs stretch to form a huge sprawling maze under a large part of the city....Some tours take in the parts of the catacombs directly beneath Perplex City Academy and fellows have been known to use these tunnels occasionally to take a short cut when running late for lectures....There is an entrance underneath Sente's official Academy residence....There are strange mosaics with symbols on the ceilings

Is Miranda making her way back to PXC via these 'twisting passages'?

Maybe Violet should use her father's academy entrance to block her attempt of resurfacing. That is of course if Miranda's making way for the mines and they somehow link to the catacombs.

They're bloody enormous tunnels, if they stretch that far out of the city...

Could someone have "added" to the maze? It would make for a very handy way to get people in and out of the city that the cops and others would have a hard time tracking (as for why Miranda did not use them the first time, maybe she figured she was being tracked and revealing that she knew ways through them would not be the smartest of options).

Maybe all will be revealed in the remaining part of the map of
PxC - the bit at the bottom during the release of wave 4. Will Newgate ruins play a part? It's a long shot.

Ooooh....it's getting exciting! Razz
