EDIT: Trouting myself.

I think we've already found something. Compare the signatures from the Jeep contract and the earlier letter. They appear pretty different.

good work. Perhaps this explains why the jeep contract was unexpecxtedly cancelled?

A funny story about reading too much into things. When I saw the "news_ad" clipping on compass, I saw vague backwards text in the background so in Photoshop I darkened and flipped it and . . .

It said "Happy Mother's Day" Whoops.

I noticed that too. There is also some backwards writing farther up. I can make out "are one know one" or something like that. Anyone else?

Ok, one quick response to this before moving onto thread meant to discuss this site...

Looking at the comments under the video, somebody said the other line reads "If you are one, know one."

I looked for a possibe anagram, but none make any sense.

EDIT: I'm just realizing that this is the thread for the "Let Your Compass Guide You" site. I was thrown off by that last post, but when you click on the link it just takes you back to this thread. LOL!!

The Compass and the Ba-Gua

Are the number of jeeps a possible clue?

I noticed the compass is divided in 10 36-degree segments, and they planned to purchase 10 Jeep Compasses. Also, the total number of jeeps ordered was 23, which is a lost number.

Another thing that I don't get is the compass. Note that you can simply hit "Parent Directory" to go back to the compass. It actually starts with 0 degree facing due north, and then the degrees run backwards as in clockwise. In other words, the degrees read as though it were a clock. Mathematically speaking it's supposed to start facing east with the degrees running counter-clockwise.

The resemblece to a clock and the on the compass that looks similar to "different," but with some numbers instead of letter, has me thinking they might be talking about different time zones. At the oceanic site apparent there was some code that traslated into "different times" along with ASCII somewhere at the site that translated into "stand by." It might have just pointing out how the east coast needed to wait for the west coast to watch the LOST episode since it's in a different time zone because they finally aired the Hanso TV ad near the end of that show. Maybe that's all those clues meant.

On the old Jeep ad, the clock reads 8:56. Interestingly, noting how the compass is in 36-degree segments, as that compass reads, 8:56 is the same as 336 degrees. Of course there's probably nothing to that.

Finally, I mentioned in a reply above how the center of the compass looks like the Ba-Gua. Take a look a look at this site to understand what this is...

http://www.circle-of-light.com/fengshui/bagua.html

Now notice what the picture of the Ba-Gua looks like...

It's the Dharma symbol with the center of the compass (the "Yin-Yang" symbol) in the middle. I was once at a site where it said the looking for new members for The Hanso Foundation, but I didn't join because I was new to this at the time and they said they'd use tracking software on your computer. I don't even know where the page is anymore, but on the page they claimed that the Dharma Industries symbol was based on the Ba-Gua.

You may want to note that the number designations can be different depending on what site you look at. Do a Google image search for "Ba Gua" and you'll see what I mean. The directions are consistent with the "gua" in all of them, but most will agree with the numbering that you see on this site...

http://www.kristallrummet.se/?http://www.kristallrummet.se/omfengshui/bagua.shtml

That is, going in clockwise order starting in the one-o'clock position, the numbers are actually 2,7,6,1,8,3,4,9 with 5 representing the middle. The "9" is at 12:00, or straight up.

Here's another image to consider...

Although I've a couple number them like this (one through eight)...

[Meta] how many commercial prodcuts can fit into one story?

So "let your compass guide you" is the slogan for the new Jeep cleverly called the "Compass?" Are we sure the marketing people aren't writing this? I know ABC's press release emphasized that they weren't - and now I can see why they felt it was necessary to state that point at the outset.

I don't understand why ABC would need to pull in all these co-sponsors to fund this project. Maybe they are planning a super expensive game? The quality of the work is high: I haven't looked at the sites too much but the commercials and the interview with the author of the book were well done.
Or maybe this is a money-making, not just marketing effort? I could see them using this as a way to do product placement within the Lost universe but not having it affect the storyline of the show. That is, Jeep could have partially paid for the Hanso commercial that ran last night, so ABC isn't giving up any valuable commercial time during a hit show simply to set the stage for this game.
----
Anyway, I am glad everyone posted all their findings. I wasn't able to get into the site at all last night! I kept just getting the error messages, so this is very helpful.

[EDIT]{{i moved my own response to rose's comments to the sprite meta thread, because i found myself wanting to cross post it there and not clutter here anyway, sorry for the initial clutter}}[/EDIT]

I also was 95% unable to get to the website last night. All i would get was a green screen, but nothing would load at all. and yes, my flash is fully updated... oh well, i can try again after work.

I don't want to whine, but the mass sponsorship makes it feel a lot less ARG-ish than others I've experienced :/

hey, im sorry but im new to this and getting confused with all the different posts about different links. I have just come across the letyourcompassguideyou.com site and wondered if this site is classed as ingame? i clicked on the hmcintyr folder and then the .login folder and it came up with this:

setenv TERM xterm
set noclobber
setenv EDITOR vi

is this some sort of code for the login for hugh on the hanso web site? and if it is does anyone know what it means?

apologies for if this post is in the wrong place or has already been posted.

It's just a standard UNIX login script. Nothing of interest there.

Is it connected to the game, and if so would that be an ingame site or not?

youtube is a site where you can upload videos. It's a public site and nothing at all to do with the game.

I was thinking it was something along those lines. I didn't know it was UNIX, but Thompson's folder said the exact same thing, and it didn't strike me as a clue. It also doesn't generate any suspicious anagrams which is something I'm constantly checking just in case.

It's one of those sites like Google or Wikipedia or Amazon. It's a site that many, many people can, and will, use. While certain things on youtube.com may be considered in-game, not everything contained on youtube will have connections to Lost.

Are both sites down right now? I have no problem going anywhere else, but it's suddenly not letting me on either this site of the THF site. I just get the "this page cannot be displayed" page.
