Bah. My team's been hovering around third for days, and suddenly it's dropped down to ninth. Sad
It looks as though I'm the highest placed team in the unfiction league with no England players, so that's an achievement of sorts.

My all Italian defense gambit paid off (surprise, surprise Wink ) and closed the gap to Cosmos to 15pts. A Gerrand hatrick now would be sweet.

Just like David Beckham and the England team I also reject racism.

While you did lose on kicks, I would more look at Rooney's crotch stomp or Sven Erickson's moves (Cole for Crouch (the guy could not carry the ball the entire tournament! The 4-5-1 compounded this problem since he had to make runs consistently, especially in this game with England going to 10 men) in the 65th minute? Lennon for Carragher in the 119th minute, even though he had come on in the 52nd minute?) for the loss. That and Ricardo guessing right on each of England's PKs (except the one Gerrard (?) kicked before the ref blew his whistle).

For what its worth, I was rooting for England because I think Portugal has had the easiest cake walk I can recall seeing for a team to get into the quarterfinals (Angola, Iran, Mexico, Netherlands).

Now, I realize you guys are bummed ... but no comments on the France-Brazil game? I realize the Les Bleus may not be your favorite team, but that was a heck of a game.

I didn't actually see the france brazil game but from what I've heard france played VERY well and Brazil played the same as usual, meaning it was predictable.

Many Apologies to the England Fans who actually do feel down

Although English (and was routing for them to win), I myself am not bummed, as if we had of got through we would have been demolished by France.

I think the reasons England can't progress further that a Quarter Final are

1) We had a manager that could not organize a p*ss up in a brewery.

2) Pinning our hopes on a player who is a ugly 'who ate all of the pies' nugget and can't standout in a major tournament for a positive reason

3) A Lack of cohesion (except when a certain player who gets sent off)

4) A Lack of goal scoring talent.

Hopefully Now that Sven has gone maybe under an English Manager, England may actually 'Win' games and a major tournament.

My Prediction of the world cup outcome

Winners - Germany
Runner up - France
3rd Place - Italy
4th Place – Portugal

I'll add my personal bugbear to the list:

5. Taking unfit players to major Championships.

(Keegan, Brooking, Robson, Robson, Robson, Robson, Beckham, Rooney, Owen....- a long and fruitless English tradition Sad )

Allez les bleus - they were sooo good that they actually put a smile on my face watching them.

Could someone kindly explain to me why exactly the goalie that got Germany to the semis didn't turn out for their last match of the tournament? Seriously, Jens Lehmann seems to be respected as some sort of penalty god, but wasn't needed? Geez... I'm destined to pick at least one or two players per round that don't even get off their asses.. I really don't understand this football malarchy.

Well, I'm now 239th overall - can't figure out where I am in round four, but I guess not high enough to win anything anyway...

The 3rd/4th place match is a non-event. Lehmann (the German keeper) has only just replaced Oliver Khan (the reserve) as the first choice. The two never got on and barely speak. Their animosity has been widely reported.

Khan will be retiring after the tournament and hadn't played, although he's been a German hero for years. He buried the hatchet by publicly going up to Lehmann and wishing him good luck just before the penalties in the quarter finals, to the amazement of everybody.

Lehmann volunteered to let Khan play in the match. It didn't mean anything in the tournament (who remembers who came 3rd last time?) and was something of a double edged compliment - "I'm the first choice, but I'll let you play in a game that doesn't matter."

Lucky for me I managed to spot this and picked Khan, for all the good an extra 2 points will do. Unfortunately, I also dropped Schweinsteiger! Ah well. That sort of tactical accumen will have the FA beating down my door to get me on Steve McLaren's (the new England manager) coaching staff.

Heh - a detailed description of what my friend told me earlier, "They thought they'd give him a final outing".. Ahh well, I had Swischesececessteiner, so that's ok - had klose as the manager though, so that was a bit of a waste..

Go Italia!

Major thanks to Ehsan for recommending Italy to me as the team to follow. (And to Giskard for the team from the Orange Country, which I will always cheer for as long as they aren't playing Italy. I still haven't quite figured out what happened to the Orange Team.)

Anyway, I held on to Italy through the whole nail-biter of the final match. I managed to look very smart and even win a few dollars. Thanks again Ehsan!
