[LOST] Possible new ARG?

If this has already been brought up, I apologize. I didn't see anything anywhere else, and searching brought up nothing.

I believe there might be a new ARG on the internet, this one involving the hit ABC series 'Lost'.

I belong to the pay-for portion of Fark.com, TotalFark. Part of TotalFark is that we get to see stories that are submitted that regular users don't get to see. Earlier this afternoon, someone submitted a story that had the link going to ABC's Lost page, with the headline '4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42'. (The story was denied for the regular page, so those of you who don't shell out $5 a month cannot see the headline or resulting discussion.)

I haven't followed the show in the least, but some of the more interested TotalFarkers did searching and found this website, who's address is just the numbers put together. Whoever is running the might-be-ARG also put up forums, which have about 50 members at this time.

So far, there's not a whole lot. People are talking about real life number broadcasts, as well as trying to figure out what the numbers mean. The only 'clue' I've been able to find is that the image on the main page is '48151623423pi.jpg', but I don't know how the extra 3 at the end or the pi are related to the numbers. Of course, finding a relation between the original numbers can be a problem.

Interestingly, the source of the main page also states
<! --
There are no secrets hidden in the source code. Feel free to look, but, anything you find will only be a coincidence.
-->

As I said, I don't have a big interest in Lost, but I played along with the I Love Bees Arg late last year, and thought that if this is an ARG, people might get a kick out of it.

EDIT - Added [LOST] tag to topic title - SG

The only thing we have so far from lost is a website www.i-am-lost.com
first mentioned here.

Looks like a good find

I don't really follow LOST either, but I know that it's J J Abrahms, who was behind ALIAS, and if he liked the idea of an ALIAS webgame, I'm sure he'd been keen about a LOST one too.

I was on that site this morning. The domain was only registered yesterday and ABC usually takes credit for their stuff in the whois info. Not this time.

My guess is it's a fan effort.

I noted this website earlier this morning on TV Club House.
Yes, something in the source, and registration via an anonymous registration just yesterday, and a link to a forum that uses the same software as a number of ARG forums, led me to believe that the fan who opened it may have ARG experience, but it's not ABC.

By the way, www.driveshaftband.com is also not ABC. It's some girl named Jill in Denver CO (her dad's name is Wayne - amazing what you guys have taught me for searching the internet for this stuff).

This is fun.

And there's a hotlink in the words.

And there's a hotlink in those words. (Hint: "lost")

And, the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 are real.

OK, so *that's* weird... Alter Bridge has something to do with Lost?

Beware The Numbers!

Heh. Went back to the site today to see if anything developed over there. The site operators took it upon themselves to delete my post where I spec'd much the same as my post above.

Doesn't look like my kind of place. Confused

So, clicking on the link in the lyrics I got to a pic of a man walking into flames or something. I couldn't find anything to do on the page but the source contained this link http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd but I'm not sure what it is...

Umm... That just tells the browser that the page is HTML 4.01 Transitional... You'll find that on a lot of pages.

I have no idea what exactly that means in java, but something is using Java on the page with the sort of Man on Fire picture.
Quote:
function MM_preloadImages() { //v3.0
var d=document; if(d.images){ if(!d.MM_p) d.MM_p=new Array();
var i,j=d.MM_p.length,a=MM_preloadImages.arguments; for(i=0; i<a.length; i++)
if (a[i].indexOf("#")!=0){ d.MM_p[j]=new Image; d.MM_p[j++].src=a[i];}}

Where did that link come from anyways? I can't find anything else to do on that little game except move around the beach, forest and dump, pick up handcuffs, wires and metal. That's it...

Thanks. I still don't know how you guys figure this stuff out, but this sure seems to suggest the site is a hoax. I found this reply searching the board for "driveshaftband" after noticing the following quite on their site...

"In December, 2004, a jury held Oceanic Airlines, L.L.P. criminally negligent and found in favor of the plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit filed against the airline on behalf of the victims of the crash and their families. The award set a staggering precedent for corporate liability - to the tune of $4,815,162,342."

But now I see I was wasting my time there.

Interestingly enough, TPTB in production have enjoyed this fan site. They have publically acknowledged it. While it will not be considered "in game" and never cannon, they do know about it (and probably have contacted the site owner).
