[NEW] Perplex City Newsletter 19 May 2006

Quote:
Hi Muffin,

You've scored 67 Perplex Points. That makes you number 7163 on the global leaderboard, out of 27995 players.

Thanks again for helping us to look for the Cube. If you've been keeping up with our Perplexian counterparts, you'll know it's been a dramatic couple of weeks as Kurt's gone on a wild goosechase after homicidal ex-beau Miranda. If you who've missed out on the drama, don't worry - you can catch up fast with our Story So Far, and the third instalment of our podcast: http://story.perplexcity.com/podcast/

And here's a sneaky bit of advanced warning for you: make sure don't fall asleep after your Sunday roast this weekend. You might be needed...

** SENTINEL QUESTIONS **

The Sentinel - Perplex City's leading purveyor of timely journalism and occasionally hysterical editorial - wants to satisfy their readers' curiosity about Earth's finest Cube Hunters. They've devised eight questions for you to answer with your customary wit, and starting next week they'll be awarding 5 Perplex Points to the player with the sharpest responses. As we'll see in a moment, that could make all the difference at the top of the leaderboard...

http://www.perplexcity.com/profile/sentinel/answer.nbuild

Don't forget that the Sentinel also awards 10 points (and a cool Perplex City-style portrait) to players who write a View From Earth column, and 5 points to a Letter Of The Week author. Click click:

** PERPLEX CITY GETS ALL A'BUZZ **

There's a new page in the Community section of our shiny website! Called Perplex City Buzz, we're keeping track of all the wonderful things people are saying about us. We try to use our Google-fu as much as possible, but do let us know if you've given us a mention and we'll link back to you. Don't forget to forward the page to all your blogging buddies too, because we're sending out a free pack of cards to uninitiated writers, podcasters and other media magnates.

Or to give us a heads-up on something you've written (and maybe to try and blag a freebie pack), email us at:

** BORDERING ON THE PERPLEXED **

Perplex City cards and starter kits are now available from all the main Borders stores across the UK. So enjoy the sweet temptations of convenience, pop into your local store and buy a pack or two (or three...). The stores would also make great places to hold swap meets, if you ask nicely!

Find your nearest store at:

http://www.bordersstores.co.uk

** LEADERBOARD UPDATE **

It's a close-run thing at the top of the leaderboard, with no fewer than 22 players sharing third place with 10208 points a piece. Badbarry proves exactly how bad he is by jumping into 2nd - his Sentinel Letter Of The Week giving him a 5 point edge over the rest of the pack. (We told you the bonus points could be important!) Oliverkeers13 maintains his reign of terror with 10258 points thanks to a bonus from the PCAG games. You can read all about the latest leaderboard action here:

Or check out the leaderboard itself:

>> ThinkGeek back in stock:

** STORY UPDATE **

Kurt has been having a hard time. After finding out his girlfriend, Miranda, murdered Isaac Cymbalisty, he went round to her apartment and was almost killed when the building exploded.

Since then, he's been using all his technical know-how (and the collective minds of the Cube Hunters) to keep up with her as she runs from one town to another, heading west. Violet helped him too, at first, but withdrew when she realised that he could get himself killed.

Now, Miranda is heading into the mountains, with Kurt close behind. He's gaining on her - and should catch up sometime on *SUNDAY AFTERNOON (BST)*. Stay alert, because he might need your help...

Check out all the latest developments at the Story So Far: http://story.perplexcity.com

Or listen to the latest podcast - "Manhunt" - at http://story.perplexcity.com/podcast/

Happy hunting,

Mind Candy

Sigh. Sunday afternoon BST is, what, somehwhere between midnight and 3am Aussie time? Oh well, I didn't need sleep anyway.

It'd be nice if a few more crucial plot points could happen at about 8 in the morning, your time... I'd be just getting home from work and right in the mood for a bit of emergency.

BTW - I'm pretty sure it's not correct to refer to a woman as an "ex-beau". Surely this should be "ex-belle"? Or has there been some kind of political correctness movement where the French language became ungendered while I wasn't watching?

I think it's been stolen into the English language, and is an acceptable phrase regardless of gender. A shocking number of native speakers can't manage English properly, never mind foreign words and phrases!

We can only hope. Wink Why oh why would MC want to be awake that early anyway?

I've only heard "beau" for boyfriend, incidentally. But ehh, whatever works. ^^
