what is D/S Here is some info I found on what DS could mean.
Some of the terms came from this site, which is on coal mining not copper.
http://website.lineone.net/~coalmining/index-page17.html
Drop shaft or Drop pit. - A shaft underground between two seams which does not come to the surface. The shafts were used to lower coal to the level of the base of the winding shaft this allowed all the coal produced in the mine to be wound up the shaft from a single loading point. See also Blind pit, Cut and Staple.
Dull. Slack ventilation, where insufficient air is entering the mine
Drop sheets. - Doors constructed of 'brattice cloth' to control ventilation.
Draw slate - A soft slate, shale, or rock from approximately 1 cm to 10 cm thick and located immediately above certain coal seams, which falls quite easily when the coal support is withdrawn.
Given that the two D/S's are close to the surface but don't break through and on top of each other
I'm putting my money on a Drop Shaft or Drop Sheet.
If it's Draw Slate, we should tell Kurt not to pull down any supports in the area. Although I'd imagine that's a really bad idea anywhere in a mine
I'm sure there are many more things that D/S could be.

Seems to me that we shouldn't take this business of "wearing" colors too literally. It's probably just the way that the miners remembered a color sequence of some importance -- color-coded buttons or signposts or something. Talking about what colors people wore is just an easy way to work those colors into the song without coming right out and saying what they're for.
That's what I assumed as well Baf, it's just a bit of fun to think Kurt might suffer a horrible death because he was wearing red or something

Great work Finalspin!! I'd agree that drop shaft sounds the most likely from the setup on the map. Has anyone sent the map to Kurt with our findings yet?

Could the Cross Hatched areas be water? The lower of section the drawing almost shows barriers that are holding the water back from flooding the rest of the mine.

So for future reference for tomorrow's event-thing:
Color: Dark Green
Cause of death: Suffocation/ inability to breathe
Possible cause: lack of oxygen
Color: Red
Cause of death: Electrocution
Possible cause: Open wires? The ore establishing a circuit with wires that are in place, causing electrocution to whoever touches them?
Color: Blue
Cause of death: Gas poisoning
Possible cause: Methane or some similar gas in the mine area
Those colors probably relate to signs or warnings.
The other problems in the mining song include:
Rockfalls and burned feet.
Rockfalls are self-explanatory. The burned feet relates to super-heated rocks? It is doubtful there'd be lava in a mine but geothermals of some sort could result in the same problem. Wearing non-"light boots" fixes the problem so perhaps it's not that hot...
It's too bad Violet hasn't given us more information from that book she read about the mines.
Let's hope that they'll end up all right,
In the Mines,
O' in the mines.

From silburn-griggs website:
Quote:
This include drawings, chisels, maps, hazard suits(to protect against gas, chemical leeks, fire, flood, radiation, electricution, and rocks ), ferrogramatographs, piping journals and even cooking utensles from the underground living quarters.
A combination of hazards may be present. e.g suffocation from flooding, chemical leeks, fire, gas. Radiation may cause liquid to boil, rocks to heat up...
Also it says:
Quote:
The mine is in a state of disrepair and significant funds will be needed to clear rockfalls
We can expect rocks blocking our path. This occasionally happens in the batcave.

You'd think with a millionaire running the ops in the batcave we wouldn't have that problem but *sigh* it happens.

- congrats beglee
And also at the site, truly among the worst I've seen
On a more game related tangent... It's probably a red herring, but I'll post it anyway just in case. Both of the map images flag up as stegged using Outguess when I check them with Stegdetect, even at very low thresholds (down to 0.14 with mymap.jpg). I've tried them with 3p and 3power as the password (yeah, I know, obvious ) with no joy, but if anyone fancies trying something else...
If you want to follow me down this particular blind alley, be aware that the nature of the images may well lead to false positives. That said, they really are very low thresholds that the images are flagging at.

Firstly - the Rawk won. Yay!
As for explaining what I'm on about - do a Google for steganogrophy. Very basically, it's hiding data inside other, irrelevant, data. Text hidden within an image is the most common kind. Stegdetect is a program that checks image files for this.
Stegdetect is (probably) the most used program to analyse images for stegging, and Outguess is a program from the same people that made Stegdetect, that looks for stegging.
Does this make sense? Alcohol + Eurovision can do strange things to a man...

Thank you! Thanks Flynn, that all makes much more sense now - I'm off to go learn about stegging then!

Quite clearly it's either where they hide their Nintendo handhelds, or the area they have marked out for undertaking certain sex activities. Either way, Kurt's in for a fun Sunday!
BTW has anyone tried anagramming the names in the poem? They're just crying out "fake name". I mean, who would be so cruel as to name a child Bertie Gangue?

On the topic of anagrams, probably not. Here are some of the more promising ones for Bertie. None of them particularly scream we're on the right track.
Bertie Gangue:
Generate Bug I
Teenager Bug I
Engage Beirut
Negate Bug Ire
Gage Be Uniter
Gauge Be Inert
Gauge In Beret
Big Gate Neer U (following the poor spelling)
Rub Gate, Genie
Near Egg Tube I
Beige Tear Gun
Unless anyone wants to trawl through the options for Clem Devine?
