Re: not looking at it correctly?

Perhaps a rotate. I mean, it is made up, essentially, of binary information, of grey pixels and white pixels, right?

I was thinking the same thing - that perhaps there's something in those dots? Looking at the GIF in Photoshop, it definitely is just 2 colors, gray and white. I tried looking at it as binary but am not sure if I looked at it correctly. Here's an extreme closeup of the dots... perhaps this is helpful to someone with more code experience than me?

This is probably nothing, but I thought I'd mention it anyways. The way the image looks, with all the vertical scratchy lines, it reminds me of those images of words that you have to tilt at an extreme angle to find out what it spells. Has anybody tried printing the image and seeing if there's anything like that? I know, it's a stretch Confused

I'm thinking that it might be along the lines of one of those optical illusion pictures - like this one http://www.grand-illusions.com/woman.htm

I've tried to turn it around and have tried squinting at it... I can't see anything though....

I printed it, but I don't see anything. (ymmv!) It's a 72 dpi (screen resolution) GIF, which means it's probably designed to be viewed on screen - it's also 400 pixels wide by 600 pixels high, which would probably imply that it's designed to be as large as possible to fit an 800 x 600 monitor (which seems to be the standard size they're working with).

I also tried looking for q9als2002.jpg, .png, and .pdf on hole2.thf.org, thinking perhaps we're looking at the wrong image ("not looking at it correctly") - no luck.

Maybe they mean that we aren't looking at it correctly because it is being compared to Marvin Candle and we should be looking at somebody else?

What a great find!

After looking at the source text for the gif, my (admittedly very limited) knowledge of camoflaged images indicates that there is nothing stegged in this file. The title of the file might well be useful for something else though.

The image itself looks quite a bit like it might be a manipulated school/college yearbook photo.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the image is definatly not stegged. The trusty Hex editor confirms that it's just a simple .gif file

hole2 image

In response to Speaker on the ABC meta-blog saying we are looking at the image the wrong way, over at thelostexperienceclues somebody named Ahmet modified the image in Photoshop using the "polar coordinates" setting and got this result:
http://img3.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?c66d5c53e3.jpg

Interesting, isn't it? The way the outside edges of the image line up make me think Ahmet is on to something.

Elsewhere, I've seen the hole2 image referred to as "map"... so if this is the "proper" way to view the image, what is it a map of/to?

It reminds me of some sort of bird - emu or the like - with a long bendy neck!

When interpreting the top row of lines and dots as morse code, I'm getting "JNTEO" (though the reading of those markings is a bit inexact to say the least) - this could be anagrammed into "ON JET" I have absolutely no idea if this means anything at all to be honest.

The dots around the edges (top and right side) map (in the mathematical sense) to the stuff coming out of the elephant's trunk. It's weird... the image looks cleaner in both coordinate spaces without those pixels. Makes me think there's something in the them. Don't know if this is the type of map people were talking about chief, but it doesn't look much like a map of a place to me.

Edit: More... the "letters" in the hair wind up on the trunk (which is pretty obvious, but I isolated them to be sure). They don't look any more readable in polar coordinates. Ok, so it's an elephant. Is there more we're supposed to get out of this? Does this shed any new light on the filename?
