I thought like this for a long time and in the course of a conversation with someone (can't remember who) I concluded that while technically correct, this sort of attitude actually prevents you from getting the most out of the game.

The major satisfaction I've had from this so far (and this is my first ARG) is to let go of what's really the truth and get into the story. I tell people about PerplexCity as if its a real place. I describe the characters as if they were real people. I also happen to be playing Zelda, Wind Waker at the minute and when I reflect on this I think that the characters in the game occupy a different space to the characters in PerplexCity.

What you propose is roughly akin to brute forcing a puzzle. Its a conscious decision to try every possible path and hope that you hit the right one. It also prevents you from letting the characters become 'real'. By throwing an email at Sente and allowing him to ignore it you are effectively deciding that you don't care about whether Sente finds out his daughters are involved, that he might go mental at them or have them locked up. I really want to encourage you, and everyone else, that its much more satisfying to let the characters become real, otherwise you might as well go play Zelda.

Jakeo: I like your viewpoint and I agree with what you are saying. My comment was simply to put peoples' minds at ease - that I wasn't going to ruin everything for them. But you are correct. If I think this way I am brute forcing the problem. I will only send messages that I think SHOULD be sent.

One thing though... the comparison you mentioned was between a game and an ARG. The comparison I'm more concerned with is a game and a movie. Are we watching/reading or are we interacting? When we fail, are there consequences or does the character just solve it for us. Have they set up a time table for when each character will divulge their piece of the puzzle and we're along for the ride or are we to probe and prod? There's been hints of the interactive, but I have yet to be blown away by anything. (And please keep in mind that I can't follow all aspects of perplexcity so there may have been some really good ones that I've missed.) I want the story to progress positively, but I'd certainly sacrifice some of that if it were to mean greater interactivity.

Think about it like this... Sente issue aside, let's say someone sent in an e-mail to one of the characters and it completely changed everything. Sure we'd be annoyed/pissed with the person who did it (if it brought about unfavorable consequences), but it would be a lot closer to reality and ultimately I think people would focus on that and not the twerp who steered the story in a new direction. I guess that's been my main interest in the Sente e-mail topic. I suppose we'll read the next chapter and when we get our cue, we'll send something his way. Smile

Edit: I would have added this as a new post, but I didn't want to bump the topic. I just found a random quote that goes along with my point...

In this game, the only things you need to do, you're told explicitly to do them
