[MEDIA] Ad in USA Today 05.25.06

This half page ad was found in Today's "USA TODAY" Newspaper:

Quote:
"The book the Hanso Foundation doesn't want you to read".

Dear Loyal Readers,

Since we were founded in 1991, Hyperion has published thousands of titles from hundreds of respected authors. Hyperion stands behind each and every one of these books with pride. We do not take accusations of libel lightly and certainly not when they mask an attempt to censor one of our authors.

The Hanso Foundation has lashed out at Gary Troup's book "Bad Twin." Before publication, this meticulously researched book was carefully vetted by our legal and research departments. All of Mr. Troup's claims about the Hanso Foundation have been verified as true.

Having failed to stop publication in the courts, the Hanso Foundation is now waging a PR campaign in your newspapers, offering no evidence to back up their wild claims of inaccuracy. If you want the truth, unfettered by Hanso Foundation propaganda, we encourage you to read "Bad Twin." The truth is in there in black and white.

Thank you and good reading,
Robert S. Miller
Hyperion Books

An interesting new use of NewsPapers... Smile I like it.

OK, so we know they want to sell us books and make money for themselves, but this statement says to me that there are clues and answers to this ARG in the book.

Anyone out there reading it? How is the book organized? And, this may sound far fetched, but has anyone ever tried a cypher on the text of the book, writing out the 4th, 8th, 15, 16th, 23rd and 42nd words to see if they read out as a message?

Just a crazy spec. But, I have to say, my mind is blown since last evening Shocked ...it's all I can think about.

I've just finished reading the book earlier this week, and I have to say that I'm really disappointed.

There are a few obviously related things in the book

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The Hanso Foundation and Widemore's companies are intrisically tied. Charles Widemore (head of Widemore) and Alvar Hanso got rich together but the book never states how.

Mittlewerk shows up at a meeting attended by Charles Widemore and his son, Cliff Widemore, who has hired Paul Artisan to find his missing twin brother, Zander. Charles doesn't like Mittlewerk and wishes Alvar had been there, Cliff doesn't see a problem with him.

There's a consistent theme of purgatory throughout the book. Characters have to make choices between good and evil. Every character is somewhat defined by where they place themselves (good/evil, they change etc.)

Anyway, I'm probably not the best person to be pointing out things in the book since its already been done here: http://www.thetailsection.com/forums/lost-experience-general/1686-bad-twin-info-dump-spoilers.html

They point out some literary themes I wouldn't feel comfortable posting, and I'd rather you just read it for yourself!

I have to say, I feel like a sucker. I bought the book specifically because I thought that the book was "The book the Hanso foundation doesn't want you to read", but there's NOTHING in there.

Aside from the spoilers above, which tell you absolutely nothing you couldn't work out already (big company exec is rich, spoilers!), the book only mentions Hanso or anything to do with the ARG in passing. It certainly isn't to the Hanso foundation what the da vinci code is to the catholic church.

If you want to read the book to learn more about the Lost world or the ARG, or to pick up story arc hints, or to learn any more at all, really, then save yourself the money and read the above spoilers instead.

On the other hand, if you just want an interesting read, then the book is very good on its own merits, and I would highly suggest picking it up. If you want to support the Lost guys or are just a fan of lost looking for a good book to read, then it's worth it, just don't be expecting a subplot about Hanso and his evil squad of F18s that shoot down airliners and kidnap polar bears.

For those interested, a few of us over at lostpedia have been crafting some spoiler-irific pages with information from the book. 'Bad Twin' would be a good starting point.
