While probably nothing, I noticed one of the theories as to the cause of this event involves an "electromagnetic fireball."

Yeah, the more I read about it the more interesting it got. I mean I'm sure it's nothing, but a lot of events surrounding it tie in to other events.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A spaceborne object being thrown out of orbit (a la the last DJDan podcast), bright lights for days after (a la effects from season 2 finale if you saw it), taking place in Siberia (a la big snow covered place from season 2 finale), etc.

Again, probably nothing, but still interesting to read about, so I'm glad I came across it. Smile

Also, notice the location of the link when all the fields are entered. Near as I can tell, it places the link right around the Maldives on the map. Not to cross into the Lost-TV show realm, but it is right on top of a nation of a bunch of tiny islands.

Considering where the actual location might be, it's quite a bit south of the Maldives. It's even south of the equator. In fact, if you were to draw a line going straight south from the Maldives, and another going straight east from Seychelles, they'd intersect right at about the location of the link at a small group islands called the "Chagos Archipelligo," a British Indian Ocean Territory...

The biggest island, Diego Garcia, is actually being leased from Britain by the United States through 2016 as an airbase for joint US-Britain operations wherein natives (the Illois) were relocated to Mauritius. The Illois have been given full British citizenship and are allowed to return provided they stay off of Diego Garcia.

There are over 600 tiny tropical islands (55 are named) grouped around 6 atolls, although many are at sea level and subject to flooding. Many areas, such as "Speakers Bank," are mostly underwater, and the highest point (on Diego Garcia) is less than 50 feet. The total population is around 5,000, and is mostly military personnel.

As it may relate to a possible clue, an amateur radio license on the island is called a "VQ9": http://www.qsl.net/oh2mcn/vq9.htm.

Also, Chagos has a law forbidding foreigners from fishing in their waters, but Sri Lankans are routinely caught illegally fishing for sea cucumbers in the area. Some of you may recall a phone clue on McIntyre's line where a girl mentioned something as "not right" regarding Sri Lanka.

I know you all enjoy playing this game as much as we all do, but take a moment to listen to us. We cannot access the page you all are talking about. Could someone take 2 minutes of their time and confirm or whatever that the link is/isnt still present. IF it is not then is it possible to help us by posting a link yourselves? Again some of us want to keep up and were unable to since the link was only present for one day. Your help would be very appreciated to a very frustrated bunch of ARGers.

All the links are still there dude. Which particular one are you talkin about though? The main map can be accessed by going to The Hanso Foundation, then clicking on Active Project, then Mathematical Forecasting Initiative and then finally, look for this image and click on it.

The one I am speaking of is the math initiative one for this topic. No matter how many times I have reloaded the page, gone through the newsletter, gone through the joop page, all the prior links, it still does not give me a link of any kind for the MFI map. I have even gone as far as going to the page and Tab through all the links and that one never shows up. Could somone PM me a direct link since apparently there is some kind of issue with the webpage that will not allow me to obtain the same link everyone else is getting. Its very frustrating, and I appreciate that there is some help to be had. I know from looking around other boards as well that I am not the only one this is happening to, I just do not know why.

There isn't a direct link, it's all flash and stuff like that.

Try clearing your cache and then going to the hanso site using the full address. IE http://www.thehansofoundation.org

I think we've covered this before on page 1, but just to be clear:
make sure you are "logged in" and see the hacked site. I usually do this on the Executive Bios page - squiggles all over alvar hanso's picture means it's been hacked. If you aren't logged in you might not get the MFI hack.
Step 1 - go to the Mathematical Forcasting page under Active Projects.
Step 2 - click the Mfi logo on the right. (click the logo again in the middle of the map)
Step 3 - find the three fill-in-the-blanks, and fill them in.
US: 42000 Italy: 10.4 Sudan: 2.55 (Sudan is in Africa)
Step 4 - There should now be a circle in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Click it to get the new memo.

I had no problems accessing the memo just now.

EDIT: I like the suggestion above - maybe you've got an old .swf file still stuck in your cache.

updates and ISP caching

The flash file which gives you the LOGO to click on has changed/updated; it is http://www.thehansofoundation.org/content_maths.swf
Deleting this file from your browser's cache *should* force it to reload; putting that URL into your address bar *should* force a new version to load. However, some people are unfortunate enough to be using an ISP which caches files at their distribution center. No matter how much you try, you cannot force your ISP to update the file; they may detect the change within 24-48 hours, and then your reload will be getting their copy of the new file.

A possible way to force is to change 'www' to a random word, like http://anything.thehansofoundation.org and navigating in from there. I cannot guarantee that this will then internally load http://anything.thehansofoundation.org/content_maths.swf but it might be worth a try.

After you get the LOGO to click on, it will download a brand new file, which may take some time on slower connections, but you could force http://www.thehansofoundation.org/swf/extra/math.swf to load in advance (note that loading these .swf files directly does NOT run them; you'll just see a blank window, but the file will at least be loaded into cache.)

(We may want to create a sticky/announcement topic for this cache question, as it will be needed with every update.)

I have tried all of the above information. Further just to prove it could not be that, I went to an entirely different computer in my office and tried it there with exactly the same result. I guess it just isnt going to work for some strange reason. Again I know I am not the only one having this issue and I am curious if there is an issue with the page today. Perhaps since many of you accessed it before this morning, it may have encountered a glitch since then that your SWF files, which are already cached, are not encountering. Thanks for the help anyway guys, its just a very strange issue.

well there is likely the answer.. thanks a ton catherwood. I will try things your way to see if that does it, though likely that is the issue. I agree that should be stickied for those folks encountering that same issue.

update:

Bingo. http://anything.thehansofoundation.org/ did the exact trick and brought up the site as it is supposed to be. Catherwood is my new hero.

As far as I know no content has been removed from THF.org. from A quick check it appears you need to have seen the newletter thing.

Most likely your cache is holding the old file. Clear it. If it still doesn't show up.do:
a) wait for 24-48 while your ISP clears it's cache
b) goto anything.thf.org that should load up new files
c) email the webmaster about site problems your having

I don't see how this issue is different to any past issue people have had accessing the site. Do what they have done and it should work

Yep, sounds like either your office firewall or whatever network they are on is caching the www files. And I'm glad I could help. I give some credit to the ABC blog and this entry by Speaker.

Anyone notice the advertisement for V-message at the botton of the document? I've never heard of it, and google shows no sign of anything significant, either. Is it a clue, or does the tribal cheif have his own personal email client?

Are we perhaps supposed to follow these directions. The text ad reads...

Are you using the latest version of V-Message? Download V-Message 7 today!

"v-Message is format for messages that is part of the Infrared Mobile Computing (IrMC) protocol. A Message Object is much like a Note Object, except that it is sent from one entity to another. It provides detailed information such as the sender, the subject field, and the message description."

not sure how this helps or ties in.... thought I'd throw it out there

V-message

continuing in that line of thought.... what is IrMC

Quote:
Infrared Mobile Computing (IrMC) is an Optional Data Protocol of the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) specifying how devices such as smart phones, handsets, pagers, and desktop computers can transfer, exchange, and synchronize information. This includes vCard for exchanging business cards between Phone Book Applications, vCalendar for calendar and todo items between Calendar Applications, vMessage for text messages such as email between Messaging Applications, and vNote for short notes between Note applications. All of these IrMC Objects are accessible through operations defined by the OBEX Data Exchange. The insecure nature of infrared transmission is not recommended for transfering PINs and passwords. The specifications can be downloaded at no charge from the IrDA website".

So of course, the question that begs answering is " what is an OBEX data exchange?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OBEX

Having read all that, I can see how this could tie in to the theme of this ARG, but as many others have mentionned before, this ARG seems to be designed for the mass, with no great depth in problem solving... all this v-message ( at least in this definition) seems way off base for the skill level the authors are throwing at us (for the moment....we hope).
