Letter to Mrs Woodcraft from Aileen Oxbow
Quote:
Peterfitch
3 July 127AC
My dear Mrs Woodcraft,
It was with much interest that I recived your letter, and am glad to help
in your biographical enterprise. As it hapens, the letter from Dr Ashberry
to my grandfather is still preserved in the family papers and I have copied
it out and enclosed it herewith. You will see that Dr Ashberry's writing
style was charming, and he was even able to present my grandfather with one
or two pieces of family history of which even he was not aware. I trust this
will prove useful to your general project.
As to the reply, there is not a great deal I can add to the letter you
already possess. My grandfather told us the story of the strange events in
the Academy on several occations, each time puzzling over their meaning and
wondering what had become of the boy Kit. As he confided to Dr Ashberry, when
the boys went exploring further from the Fellows' Garden he followed Kit
through a side door which led to a set of corridors which Kit did not know.
There they encountered the beak-nosed Academician he describes so vividly in
his letter, and there Kit told the lie which evidently brought so much woe
upon him. When asked by the Academician who their parents were Kit, not
wanting to bring trouble upon his father, said that he had none, that he was
an orphan. Whatever befell the child at the hands of this man, I think we
can be assured that, had it been known he was an Academician's son, he would
have been safe.
The story my grandfather told me, going from there to the "magic" which the
Academician promised to show Kit alone, was in almost all points identical
to the one you possess. There is only one significiant diffrence. To me, my
grandfather always named a fifth child with whom they played that day:
Gwynneth Hughes. It is perhaps because of the great status of that name that
he did not dare tell Dr Ashberry while Hughes still lived.
I remain,
Your faithful servant,
Aileen Oxbow

Hmm... one line of thought for the card...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are 47 pentagons in this, an obvious hearkening to the U.S. flag. New Mexico was the 47th state to join the U.S. Maybe something to do with that?

Possible Meta Puzzle It doesn't show up on the posted scan, but there's a very clear silver "score" line on this card. It runs horizontally and is 6cm up from the bottom.
What's interesting is that there are two similar score lines on #228 - Neography: one horizontal (2.5cm from bottom) and one vertical (dead centre).
The only other Silver I've been able to check so far is #226 - The Great Bomb Chase. That does not appear to have any silver lines.

I've looked over my card .. can not see any score lines.
The only thing that seems to match what you mentioned is the error with the silver backing just below name banner.

I know what you mean, but that's not it.
There have been a number of manufacturing flaws on the cards in the past, but this definitely looks deliberate.
Pehaps "score line" is a bad description. It looks more like the metallic strip on banknotes, only thinner. It shines-up silver if the light catches it right. It's much clearer on #228 where you can see the lines as black against the card's silver edging.
*EDIT*
From comments on other threads, it looks like these lines are an artifact of the printing process and not intentional after all.
Apparently they have been seen on some S1 cards, though they were new to me.
Apologies for leading everyone on a wild goose chase.

i think the red and white looks like computer code. and the 47 stars/pentagons could refer to 1947, first modern computer.

My first thought when I saw this card was:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The Flag paintings by Jasper Johns
However, I'm assuming that it's more likely to refer to an historical event.

I think you're right Jerry. I also wish I had the card to see if I was right.

It is binary and if you want to know what it says read this:-
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
who first leaked the documents?
although it is not the answer only the question.

Big spoiler below for those who might be stuck:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The binary coded question isn't enough for the answer: Look to the "stars" for more guidance.

I can see
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
48 Pentagons
But I have no idea how this links to the question of
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Who stole the documents?
Has it got something to do with the order of the 50 US States and the order in which they joined the Union?
