I received a SnailMail Postcard!

(Message edited because somebody saying they are from CTW said that the return address is their name and address and they want it removed)

I think it's in-game

One side has:

Dear Special One--

A mute woman appeared in my ofice, signing in
an ancient battle hand-language. She asked me
to send several messages for her, and I couldn't
refuse. This was the only address she gave me,
saying that more would follow, and this was her
first message:

(slightly larger font)

In ancient Greece there was an old,
blind prophet of whom I was fond.

-------------------

On the other side of the card (ignore lines, spaces didn't work):

xxxxxxxxxxxxx___________________________FIRST-CLASS MAIL xxxxxxxxxx________________________________U.S. POSTAGE
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx______________________________PAID
__________________________________________Carol Stream, IL
__________________________________________PERMIT NO. 480

***AUTO**ALL FOR AADC 786
10323 1 AB 0.194 MP_10516637342369A
(barcode duplicated w/ I and i for longer and shorter lines)
IIiiiIIiiIiIiiiIiiIiIIiiIiiIIiiIiiIiiIiiIiiiIIiIiiIiiIiIiiIIiI
My name and address

If I get near a scanner soon, I'll scan it in.

This is surely a reference to Teiresias (also spelt Tiresias):

Does thisrelate the mute woman with Athena?
She blinded Tiresias but favoured him with the power to understand the speech of birds.
Battle language - as well as wisdom Athena was goddess of battle (and evolved culturally from a neolithic bird goddess).

Not unless Dave:

a) Lives in Illinois

or

b) Drove to Illinois to mail the letter.

Or am I reading the post wrong? Looks like the card was sent out by someone in IL, but the return address is Dave's.

Looks fishy to me...

The original return address was Dave's, before it got deleted from the post for privacy reasons.

I want a postcard! Has anyone else gotten one who gave Ewan their address? That is I assume how the "mute woman" got ahold of them. <runs away to send Ewan her address>

Response to confronting him about CTW

From: "Ewan McGregor" <pompous_psycho>To: nihilisiaSPLATyahoo.com
Subject: Re: hey You in there
Date: Sat, 10 May 2003 02:47:21 +0000

I'm "using" his "material"? He can have this life back, if it is his.

...And what if it is his? God, what a depressing thought. Sometimes I
feel
like I'm a tabula rasa, a blank page catching the imprint of other
pages --
the moon, having none of its own, reflecting back the light of the sun.
I
am different things to different people.

I am a thief, it's true. I take things sometimes (out of need, or out
of
mischief).

When revelation comes slowly, it's hard to tell which came first.
(Chicken?
Egg? River of woe?) So I try not to concern myself. In
forgetfulness
dies dibs.

River of Woe = The Acheron, one of the rivers surrounding the underworld in Greek Mythology. Just in case we didn't have enough cross-game references yet (www.acheron.us) Smile

Hades is also the last of the 9 Gods in the unsolved "Ewan's New Password".

See http://www.desy.de/gna/interpedia/greek_myth/place.html

I'm guessing Ewan will be listening to something from Styx one of these days... "Too Much Time on My Hands" comes to mind! Smile Other fine choices: "Queen of Spades", "The Grand Illusion", "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)", and "Why Me" ? Wink Yeah, I'm a Styx nut.

i got a postcard today!

I sent Ewan my address last week and today I received a postcard!

The back:
Quote:

Dear Special One--

A mute woman appeared in my office, signing in
an ancient battle hand-language. She asked me
to send several messages for her, and I couldn't
refuse. This was the second address she gave me,
saying that she hoped more would follow, and this
was her message:

(like N's, a larger font:)

Nine children we had, all girls. I wanted to adopt
the blind one, a boy to round them out to ten. It
did not stop my consort from finding his pleasure
with a nymphette.

The front appears identical to N's, but this time the return address was "Kien Tran" in Calgary Canada.

Well, it appears that the Titaness Mnemosyne, goddess of Memory, had nine daughters by Zeus, these were the nine Muses. Zeus was quite the ladies man, and bedded varies Nymphs, but the most notable one was probably Callisto.

However, I can't find any mention of a blind boy that Mnemosyne wanted to adopt.

Another possibility: Pierus, king of Emathia in Macedonia, also had nine daughters with his wife Euippe: The Pierides or Emathides. These challenged the Muses (yes, Zeus's nine daugters!) to a contest, lost, and were turned into magpies (great, more birds).

And this link http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/OMACL/Hesiod/homrhes.html suggests that Pierus had a child with the nymph Methone, named Oeager. But it's not at all clear it's the same Pierus, and this is a really obscure detail, apparently (one Google hit).

No mention of adopting the blind one.

I think the "blind one" now refers to Tiresias/Teiresias from the first message. He had dealing with both the Muses and Mnemosyne, although I haven't found any reference to her wanting to adopt him.

So the second answer should be "Tiresias"

Hi. I haven't been keeping up with this game very well and even when I was I was just lurking. But I submited my address to Ewan back in the day and today there was a postcard in the mail. It said:

"I offered him elevation, of a sort; he accepted, and was a-mused."

The return address was "Andrew Chasin".
