These numbers may simply be a one-time key pad, meaning, there is no way in the world you'll decypher it unless you have "the other end of the stick". Ever hear of number stations?

Ok, forgive me if this has been done (it's just about 3, and my eyes are glazing over like big 'ol frosty donuts. See? Even my smilies suck) but there's a site called http://www.phonespell.org/ where you can put in a phone number and it gives you the equivilant in words/letters

anyway, tried it for 212.796.0735 and it gives me:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
a-1-cry-607-el
a-1-cry-60-pelt a-1-cry-60-rely a-1-cry-60-self a-1-cry-60-sell
a-1-as-960-pelt a-1-as-960-rely a-1-as-960-self a-1-as-960-sell

Maybe it's nothing, maybe it's been done, but frankly, I won't care until I sleep some Confused

one of the numbers was put out by the 2600 people as a contest for hope tickets, for an explanation of the 2600 number (station) number can be found here:
http://blog.hopenumbersix.net/2006/06/22/numbers-station-solved/

this is only for the number that was related to this craigs list message:
Quote:
Mein Fraulein,

Hope to see you this summer. Please call.

///617///848///1172///

The other numbers are obviously not as easy (if not impossible) to solve.

Mystery solved!

http://www.homelandstupidity.us/2006/08/05/phone-numbers-stations-mystery-revealed-at-defcon/

Seems it was an experiment to see "...how third parties could be used unwittingly to create a virtually untraceable communications channel between two parties in order to foil traffic analysis attempts by hostile intelligence agencies."

Actually, I think the story and intention behind this are rather interesting...you might want to read up on it here.

I'd also like to point out that some of the messages still haven't been decrypted and the creators state that the last one does not use a one-time pad for encyrption. They also challenge everybody to crack it.

It would be cool to see someone from unfiction show the cryptography community where it's at! So if some of you crypto buffs want to take a shot at it...find the code and backstory here.

Now if only somebody would find out what's up with xccr.com...

EDIT - Turns out it was a Vigenere...
