Here's a couple of things that make you go 'hmmm'

1. DJDan said in the other shark picture that the Dharma Logo wasn't a tattoo. However, where the skin peels away you can see that the 'ink' has bled through into the flesh giving a dark/black smudge in the flesh.

2. The wound appears to look like a 'D' resting with it's flat edge pointing upwards. The lack of other wounds means this is not a bite, however the wound was caused by something with a point/causing a crater. Possibly a point blank gunshot? (which raises the question, was this shark shot when it was alive or dead?)

3. The wound itself doesn't seem to have caused the skin to be ripped. The skin has been ripped away completely on the underside of the shark (bottom of the picture) and only torn part way off at the side (over the wound and now hanging at the right).

4. There is no blood stains/dried blood, yet the flesh has become pale. The shark either never had blood, or there is another wound somewhere on the shark which is lower than this, and it bled out from it. The other option is that the wound was cleaned for some reason. No obvious salt desposits on the skin, so I'm guessing it didn't get cleaned during tidal waves (as the water would have pooled in the dip of the wound and the other higher wounds and evaporated, leaving salt).

5. The higher wounds appear like the scars I've seen on dolphins after attacks from sharks/being caught in nets. Interestingly enough, this is one tough shark, since the wounds penetrated the skin, but left not a single mark on the flesh.... unless they magically stopped dead where the skin is torn away.


My hypothesis is as such...

The shark died during a research experiment by Dharma/Hanso into disease resistance in sharks (it's well documented, please google for more info). However, whatever they gave this shark left it dead.

The shark washed up on the beach, and was either scavenged by the natural inhabitants of the island (animals, not castaways!), or was damaged by the rocks before washing up on the beach (and thus bled out from those wounds whilst in the water).

It has rained, and washed the dried salt from the shark's corpse.

The man in the suit arrived and used a large syringe like device to remove material from the shark's internal organs (hence leaving a puncture wound, and the semicircle from the impact of the syringe/base of the needle). And is on his way back to whatever means of transport he is using when we catch up with him. Since the shark is now bloodless (at least in the surface flesh) then the syringe marks has not bled.

About the shark disection. The guy who said he disected one is right, a sharks skin is very rubbery so nothing seems too messed up about the picture. We disected them last semester. They didnt do the best job creating the image but you can tell they tried to make it look real.
