[RUMOUR] [TRAILHEAD?] Scapegoat_2006

There's a rumor at Lazylaces about an ARG starting up next month.

Quote:
I suspect I will be posting more on Scapegoat in coming months, and I think it will be one for you puzzlers. For now all I have is a mysterious note telling me that the puzzle officially starts next month, but clues will be left on the website up until then. The first clue has been posted today, and it will change every few days. It's all a bit cryptic at the moment though, and it looks like it won't start making sense for a while. A long term one to watch [subbed by anon].

You have an '/url' at the end of your link there, making it not work.

The site is http://www.freewebs.com/scapegoat_2006/.

I'll just say that in the past, I have not had much luck with ARGs hosted on Freewebs.... Let's hope this one becomes an exception.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Sneakily hidden in the source code is the following:

<Finding your way will start with an 'a'!>

Apart from that experience, which I share, another thing to take note of is that Freewebs pages can only be accessed through a "portal ad page"... not something I really enjoy doing... keep your popupblocker handy.

It's a hint to click on the 'a' in the word 'have' you see there. It brings you to: http://www.freewebs.com/scapegoat_2006/5c4p3g0a7.htm

I'd assume they want the lost letters in the page name found.
"5c4p3g0a7"
SAEOT, Saeot and saeot don't work, though.
Any 1337 speakers around?

Not that I'm the resident expert or anything, but isn't 5c4p3g0a7 just "scapegoat" in l33tspeak?

I also like how the right-click has been disabled on the front page. That might stop my mother from getting to the source of the page, but how is that going to stop anyone who normally plays ARGs from seeing it?

Hence, my trying to get something with the SAEOT characters.
As, "Scapegoat" and "scapegoat" don't work.

I'm thinking this means we'll get an update every day or so, a la synagoga. Of course, I'm still going to spend some time thinking of an answer to the next page.

I drifted away from ARGs for a while, but seeing this on Lazylaces was enough to intrigue me. In other words, count me in.

The site has gone through changes at least twice today that I've noticed (it's a slow day at work Wink ). When I first visited, I looked at the source code and saw no clues (also didn't find anything clickable at that time), and the page allowed right clicking. The second time I visited,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the link was there and right clicking was "access denied".
The third time I visited, the "Sponsored by Lazylaces.com" thing appeared.

Using Netscape (at least 7.1), you get the "Access Denied" ... and the context menu, which allows you to View Source.

Foolish PMs thinking everyone uses IE.

Same thing that happens with Netscape happens with Firefox.

And, In IE, you just go to [File], [View Source].

I wonder if Graeme is working on it or just "sponsoring" it?
