WIBS Post Game PM Chat - Thursday, April 13th 9pm EDT

A post game chat with the Puppetmasters of Who Is Benjamin Stove? has been scheduled for "Stoveday" - Thursday, April 13th at 9pm EDT (6pm PDT). It will be a moderated IRC chat held on irc.chat-solutions.org in #benjaminstove.

For those unfamiliar with IRC, you can use the Unfiction Java client to connect easily without installing a new client. Just select the room "benjaminstove" from the drop down list to go directly into the chatroom. If you need detailed instsructions, please read this wonderful thread by imbri to get you started. Unfortunately for people stuck behind corporate firewalls, with the disapperance of the open public cgi clients, connection to the chat may be impossible for you. We do apologize in advance for this and invite you to submit your questions below. We will make every effort to ask questions of people not in attendance and post the log after the chat.

As many players may not have participated in a moderated PM chat before, here is a brief tutorial (based upon past chats. Your actual experience may vary.)

Players, moderators and PMs will gather in the #benjaminstove chat room. About 10-15 minutes before the start of the chat, a queue will be opened for those that wish to ask questions. You can join the queue by messaging one of the moderators (e.g. /msg Rowan I have a question to ask ). Your name will be added to the list on a first come, first served basis, so make sure you arrive early and pay attention to the annoucements in the channel if you wish to ask a question. The queue is normally closed at the start of the chat, although depending on the number of questions received and how quickly they are answered, it may be opened again later in the chat. If you have multiple questions, you will have to join the queue multiple times, but please be aware that we will normally allow everyone one chance before letting questioners repeat.

Once the chat starts, the room will be moderated - that is, no one can talk unless they are a moderator, a PM, or the question asker. A secondary chat room may be established for those that wish to comment on the chat as it is ongoing. When it is time for a new question, the person next up in the queue will be voiced and allowed to ask their question. The moderators will make every effort to alert players when they are next in line, but please be aware that you may receive no warning other than being voiced in the channel. In order to keep things moving at a quick pace, we ask that everyone in the queue already have your question typed out and ready to be pasted into chat when they are voiced. Please keep in mind that there is a maximum number of characters that can be pasted into the chat, so avoid lengthy questions or break them up into multiple lines to avoid having part of it cut off. You are normally allowed one question and one related follow-up per turn. Follow-ups may be eliminated at the discrection of the moderators based upon time constraints. If it turns out that your question has been asked and you cannot think of a new one before your turn, please let the moderators know as we can push you back in the queue until you are ready. Once the question and follow-up have been answered, the current questioner will be devoiced and a new turn will start.

PM chats normally run for about an hour in duration. They can run longer if the PMs schedules permit it, although it is not a guarantee. At the end of the moderated chat, the room will be reopened up for general chat with anyone who wishes to stay around. If you have any questions during the chat, please feel free to /msg a moderator and they will assist you as best as they can.

If you are unable to attend the chat, but still have a question to ask, please ask it in this thread. Moderators will gather all the questions at the beginning of the chat and will ask them on your behalf. We will try to get as many questions answered from this thread as possible, but please be aware that we may remove some questions from our list if we deem them very similiar (or identical) to questions asked by players attending the chat.

I'm still at work at that hour, so no chance of me attending. Thank the PMs for an enjoyable experence. Any chance of asking the following questions (if they don't get answered already)?

1) What was up with the painting, and what did the x-ray technicians at the airport see? That never seemed to get answered.

2) Did this game progress as it was supposed to, or did it end up getting truncated for reasons out of the control of the PMs?

3) Another dangler: what made Ben's crops grow so well?

Will I be able to read the chat afterwards? Much as I will miss WIBS and all the crazies I met there I don't think I'll get up at 4 AM to follow a chat.

Oh yeah, forgot to put that in my essay. The chat will be available to read here afterwards. We usually will clean them up and add a bit of color so that it's easier to read, so it can take up to 24 hours for a nice version to appear, although we try to get a raw copy up right after the chat.

I thought it would be helpful to explain what goes in the fields for that interface:
http://www.chriscole.info/cgiirc/irc.cgi
Quote:
Nickname: (please fill in your own screen name)
Channel: #benjaminstove
Server: irc.chat-solutions.org
Format: (leave as default, or choose a template)

for example:
Nickname: iamnotanalien
Channel: #benjaminstove
Server: irc.chat-solutions.org
Format: mirc

I do not know if this cgi script has any limitations for number of people who can use it at the same time. In case it does, please use the java applet or install mIRC instead, if you can. And take some time before the event to test these out, if you are not a regular to IRC, and work out the bugs early so you won't miss a single minute of the fun!

I don't believe the cgi script itself has any limitations. However, there are limitations on the chat-sol server: only 3 connections per IP. When you connect through the cgi, you are using its IP, so when the 4th+ person tries to connect, they will get a message saying that no more connections are allowed (or something to that effect). Both the java client and mIRC use your computer's IP address, so you won't run into that problem. The cgi client can also get much more laggy than the direct connections (and subject to random dropouts), which is another reason to use java or a standalone if you are able.

post-game chat

I can't make it to chat either.

I want to know who "They" were.
Also, was the Miami hoax note part of the game, or did someone actually manage to co-opt the game?
Was Shannon a plant by "Them"?

I may or may not be able to make it, so I thought I would at least get my questions in:

1.) Where is the location of the mural behind Dr. Martinez in photo on the Tio do Misterio site
(I spent many a late night looking for that!! I need answers!! Very Happy )
- <g_zeus> the mural was in Ludington, MI
- <snamo> and that was rods grandfater

2.) Were the glyphs on the SitC site a puzzle, or merely a reference tool similar to blog categories? Or was their purpose to give us a headache after bashing our heads against our desks trying to figure out what they were for? Smile
- <flmutant> they grouped together chunks of text about particular concepts
- <flmutant> and tried to convey the concept in the name
- <flmutant> like mntn for opposition
- <flmutant> and birth for "early knowledge and new beginnings"
- <flmutant> not a puzzle per se, but a way to get you to look at the text beyond just a linear flow

3.) Do you have any questions for / feedback from "the Benjii / Tinfoil Posse / Solvers / WIBShits"?
(awesome job, btw, to all involved!! Thanks for your hard work!!)
We could email our responses so as not to open up the PM chat for a free for all.
- ummm . . . TEXTURE!!

EDIT: Edited for posting the answers from last night's PMchat

Most everyone covered my questions, but I just have a couple more:

1) We obviously missed some things. Everyone knows it. What was the biggest "thing" we missed out on?

2) What was that angle diagram? I swear, if it actually fit on that map somehwere, I'm gonna....

One more question: Who did they use to plant the letters around the country?

Good question, sidtheduck. I would like to know the answer to this, too.

I hope you guys don't mind if I sit in on the chat, even if I dropped out halfway through, I guess I'm still kind of interested. I won't hog the PMs, of course, but I definatly want to hear what they have to say

Were the library notes there on a "timer"basis? That is, if we didn't pick up the notes within a pre-specified time frame, the MiB's moved in and took them?

Or were the MiB library locations scripted?
