Treasure Hunt: PoTC and Volvo

Saw this article online:

Walk the plank with Volvo XC90

Volvo's XC90 would hardly pass as a pirates ship, but the large SUV could make very handy loot when this buried treasure is uncovered by one modern-day pirate.

Ahead of the release of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Volvo will stage a multi-media treasure hunt for a pirate-themed XC90 model buried somewhere in the world. This V8 XC90 features graphics from the film, black leather seats, custom 20-inch alloy wheels, and other pirate features.

After collecting a treasure map from Volvo dealerships, modern pirates will have to register online to continue the hunt for the buried vehicle. Puzzles will be emailed to registered treasure-hunters and seven finalists will be selected from around the world to deduce the answer to the final clue, which will be emailed on July 12. These finalists will be flown to the loot's burial site, where they will then have to search the area for the buried vehicle.

The first treasure hunter to unearth the buried XC90 will get to take the SUV home. Unfortunately, prospective South African treasure hunters have been excluded, Volvo Cars SA's Deon Sonnekus said.

The elaborate "global" campaign using the revised XC90 will coincide with the launch of the sequel to the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean, which also loaned its name to an entrant in the Volvo Ocean race.

The facelifted XC90 will be available in South Africa from the end of July. The new D5, with power boosted from 120 kW to 136 kW, and torque increased to 400 N.m (from 340 N.m), already used in the current model, will be carried over when the new model is introduced.

Volvo's first V8 will also be installed in the new range, but only from early October. Vital statistics for this engine include 235 kW of power and maximum 440 N.m of torque at 3 900 r/min, though Volvo claims at least 370 N.m of this will be available at 2 000 r/min.

Most engine variants will be coupled with Volvo's six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission and upgraded all-wheel drive system with instant traction.

Visual changes made to the exterior have been kept to a minimum. A new grille, colour-coded bumpers, redesigned tail lamps, and partly colour-coded mirrors with integrated indicators (now with a one-touch function).

For the interior, new colour options and more luxurious finishes have been selected. The centre console has been upgraded with a new display and chrome-trim.

Guess I'll be stopping by the local Volvo dealer to pick up my map.

and http://www.volvocars.co.uk/thehunt/

Same content probably - but you then get to link to UK Volvo dealers instead Smile

I'll try to pick up a treasure map tomorrow Smile Anyone know how hard it is to get silly pirate decals off a car? Wink

Just a quick update on reading the site - it's not really a proper ARG of any sort, the description reads like a puzzle trail with a grand final on an island somewhere with a representative from each territory they advertise it in..

Also looks like it might be one code, at least per territory, to enter.. Will see tomorrow probably..

Right. It's not an ARG. It's a puzzle competition like the Google Da Vinci Code or the Eurostar Da Vinci Code Quest game.

I picked up my map, and I'm trying to figure out what they mean in the first clue right now.

"Roll the Dice Until They're Twelve"
"Our destiny reveals itself"

I've rolled those dice and got them to be twelve, but nothing happened on the map.....

The puzzles have been fun and a bit challenging so far.

For those of you who want in, you have until June 16 until the next part of the game starts. So you have until then to get up to the "stopping point" of this first part if you want to be on a level playing field with everyone else.

This thread is continued (at great length) over here, but both threads are currently locked from further discussion. General discussion of the game continues in the specific forum set up for it. Please try to tag your posts appropriately. Thanks.

Again, no need to continue emailing me about reopening this thread for discussion, as there is a whole forum for it.
