[QUESTION] [DISCUSSION] From here on out...

::Jerk Mode Activated::

so... is it too much to ask for honor among pirates, and for everyone to stfu when we get the password hint for the semifinals?

These last couple puzzles should have drastically "thinned the herd", but now there are going to be tons of people slowing down the server that have absolutely no business being as far along as they are.

It's already painfully obvious that the game server is not going to be able to handle all the traffic on the 11th/12th. Just look at how long it takes to load the game map today.

If you're one of the hundreds/thousands of people "playing along for fun", do us all a favor and wait an extra day. You'll still be able to access and solve the puzzle, and you won't be in the way of the people taking this thing far too seriously (such as myself).

Not everyone's map takes ages to load because of the amount of people taking part, that depends on how slow your machine is.

If everyone wants to go to the end on the 11th & 12th then let them. You can't make people keep quiet about passwords etc. and you certailny can't stop people playing along on those days.

Bloody hell! I reckon the games got to you Rolling Eyes

It's been said before and I would like to stress again, that these boards are part of a community that is based on gaming and puzzle-solving in a cooperative manner, and we can't (and I personally don't want to) make people hold back on these kind of things, whether or not they are playing for fun or to win a car, however hard you try.

I can see your frustration, but, concerning the speed of the game, it's really up to the people running it to offer a server/bandwidth capacity that is in line with the game's popularity, or, if not, accept the fact that everyone has the same (dis)advantages.

Unless you're on a narrowband connection, and the perceived slowness is simply the amount of data they're pushing at you. Personally I'm on broadband cable and haven't noticed any performance problems on the game pages. This forum has certainly been slow, but not the game itself.

My guessing is that it's an excuse of some sort because there hasn't been a person i've seen that's complained about the slowness of the game. Now if it was a problem then alot more people would have said something about it.

If we can't all play fair and be considerate to others then what's the point, isn't that just selfishness?

my 8 meg broadband is doing me fine thanks, msmail... the only slow thing around is this forum at peak times - but the hunt pages are super-duper quick for me.

Hopefully, with the combination of Unfiction's new server, and eon8 being over, the forum won't be so slow now. Smile

I beg to differ with y'all. I am on dial-up. Can you believe it? I live in a 100 year old house who's wiring was prolly done by Edison himself. Heh. Anyway, it is S L O W E R than molassas. It takes approximately 7 minutes to load one of the game screens when there is average activity, 10 when it's busy, and about 5 when it is a slower activity time. What is worse is there is about a minute delay after I enter the new coords.

So my method is to load in advance....

What I find quite interesting is the fact that our email states that the clue will be given to us here in the US on the 11th, yet the site won't be activated until the 12th. That means they are giving us time to figure it out.

That leaves folk who might figure it quickly at a disadvantage if they have a slower connection. I am seriously thinking of finding some friend or relative, heck even a cyber cafe, for the actual game day. But what will most likely happen is that I will forget and be late anyway....heh.

I know you can't stop anyone from posting the answers, but this fact might make them think twice: it specifically states in the rules that posting an "answer" online is grounds for disqualification. It doesn't seem to cover hinting at the answer, from what I can decipher. But I would think that a blatant spoiler post is verbooten. Normally there is a 30 day vetting period where the "winner's" elegibility is established by the lawyers. I can tell you from personal experience it is quite thorough and if you HAVE acted in a manner which might disqualify you, they will find it. In the US they have 45 days to perform this, get any and all affidavits, and then you will be awarded your prize.

Most especially, if you are a winner, please be prepared to be challenged by nutcases, crazies, and folks so seethingly angry that they put their lives on hold for a silly puzzle and didn't win squat. Jealousy and greed are an awful combination, and you might be attacked on the game message boards as well, but chin up!! This place is full of great folks. Unfiction was one place that celebrated for me (even though I wasn't allowed to talk about anything publicly without the approval of the sponsors for a period of time). Just trust in the sponsor's lawyers and you'll be fine.

Good luck to everyone!!!! I think the playing field is gonna be pretty level, and everyone here will have a chance!!

Very Happy

Agree with you Sassy.

If you don't like the forums and you think you are soooo good and there are those that bottom feed - then don't browse.

Some clues are crystal to me and some leave me talking like a nasty pirate.

Most everyone has been great. Kind and considerate of not leaving spoilers in plain sight.

Like you I have dial up. Where I live we have tried numerous times to get faster service only to be told that our area dosen't support such yet. (and I ask 'are you kidding me' Rolling Eyes ) I have spent hours (more than on this game) trying to find out who can sevice something faster for us.

I just chalk it up to murphy's law. In fact I believe with all my heart that Mr. Murphy has got to be my biological dad. My constant slow and bad luck has persisted. I have been told that I am too nice and let others ahead of me.

Should listen to old Abe L. "Good things come to those who wait..........

but only what's left from those who hustle!".

Anywho.... I'm having fun with this!!!!

While I agree it would be stupid of a winner to admit it, I see no rule against collaboration on anything prior to the final leg event, online or not. But please point it out the specific statement if I somehow missed it:

I've been trying to play the game and I am sooo happy to have found this site. Every time I've been stuck someone either had hints or the answer (for when I was ready to pull my hair out). I highly doubt I will win but it's been fun. And thanks to everyone who was helpful. Very Happy

A couple of points:

Thanks to all on the site. I did ok on many of the puzzles, but NEVER would have figured out the morse code, cause I could not tell dots from dashes.

Also could not have seen the heads without the screen shot posted here.

BUT... don't pillory me, I really would have preferred that the narrrative / poem that tied everything together would have been needed more than the ability to slow down your computer such.

I would love to believe that "white"and "Tempest " and "hound" and some variation of wreched/dammed will come in to play at the end.

Good luck -- I hope one of you win the thing, it has been a pleasure.

You are right, Nusa....I didn't read anything from the link you provided. Yet I have seen another set of rules out there....was it the "official" bog site???

I guess I am out of the running tho'......I am recuperating from a serious car accident and not exactly a prime candidate for any kind of race.

I didn't like that part about extreme danger and/or death! That's something to ponder. The whole way it is set up with the morals issues makes me think it will be filmed.

Emails to everyone?

If we haven't been logging in to solve any of the puzzles so far, how do they know if we have or not? We get the emails anyway don't we?
Does that mean that everyone who signed up with an email address will get the final keyword clue on the 11th?
