That makes sense. I don't even know how MySpace works, but I guess you're saying that when you add a friend, your name automatically appears on their page.

Well, they have to approve you as their friend before you will appear.

Just be sure to keep on talking to DSLerator. He seems to like you. At times you're so brash with him that it wouldn't surprise me if he just hangs up on you, but he keeps on talking to you while seemingly dropping subtle clues. You know that DSL, along with his co-workers, made up Mandrake Wig and operate that site, and yet DSL said he doesn't know the guy. That in itself sounds like a clue. That is, he's depicting stuff about a guy he doesn't know...which makes me think that "the Drake" and his co-hort, Wally Bole, may be Hanso staff they're looking into. I'm also sure there's a clue in those pictures with them so obviously being facial features pasted on top of each other. The seperate features need to be broken apart and compared to any and all known characters. What is it that the Verizon employees all seem to know, that we don't?

Although, Matt, you ARE on his top 24. And you're not even a hot naked chick bending over (stupid pop-culture reference, sorry).

I've been trying to figure out which of his friends I would know from here, only a few seem to match up ;-P

That just means Matt was one of the first 24 people to add him as a friend. I'm up there at number 3!

Grr, so I can't strive to be one of Drake's top 24? Damn.

So there really is like an ARG rule that characters - meaning any of them - can't read these boards? Sometimes I have trouble understanding what parameters exist. It just seems like DJ Dan, Rachel Blake, the guys/gals at Verizon, etc, are playing this game right along with us, and for that matter are reading up on boards like this. I thought I could find some proof when I brought up Matt being on Drake's site, and clearly that's not, but it still seems like we're being watched. I really get that feeling with Rachel, like she's reading some of what we're saying from her laptop in Copenhagen, although I suppose she has enough reading to do on her own blog with all the comments she gets. What about the Speaker hosting his own blog on ABC's site? Are what players saying on his blog off limits too? I mean, Speaker is officially "in-game" right? And even if such rules exist, can we trust that every character understands and abides by them? As shifty and conniving as these characters are, I don't feel like I can trust any of them to abide by any rules.

You can't, nor should you.

Though this topic is hurtling straight toward the realms of META discussion, I might as well say what's on my mind. There's no doubt that TPTB are reading these boards—take it as a given. They might even be posting here, pretending to be regular people like you and me, players in the game, but all the while they're pushing us in the right (or wrong?) direction.

Whenever I quoted DSLerator's IMs, I always made sure to reference the game and also put a notice there to TPTB reminding them that no character could use that information or claim that I leaked their IMs (or whatever) because it specifically referenced the game, and a character reading that information would obviously have breached the fourth wall. This is not a hard and fast rule, however, because Speaker (a character in the game) somehow ignores all references to the game itself on his blog, even though he reads practically every comment. If you e-mail him about the game, he will say, "What game?"

The best advice I can give you for now is that whenever you post information here that a character gives you (and obviously wanted to keep secret, such as DSLerator's comment that he has a spy in his group), you should explicitly reference the game and remind TPTB that they cannot use your post. Even though characters shouldn't be reading the posts here anyway... but in the end... they don't have to follow the rules.

There are no ARG rules, because there is no ARG-sanctioning board of rule-makers and enforcers.

However, there are Unfiction rules (the Terms of Service*), that an ingame character cannot POST here to the unforums. And where is the logic in allowing GAME characters to read a message board which talks about them as if they weren't real? The PMs behind the curtain of a game may read our forums -- they may want to guage their audience reaction to aspects of the game, for example -- but they may not interfere with the flow of their own game by posting in that particular forum.

So if a game decides to draw a member of Unforums into their world and turn them into a character, we do get nervous.

They had damn well better NOT be posting as players!!

*(I was going to link to the Terms of Service, but I couldn't find them quickly. Oh, they're not a board feature link, but a forum topic.)
HERE are the Unfiction/unforums Terms of Service -- Lots of words in bold there.

And yes, this is getting to be rather META in direction, and perhaps I should split the thread a few posts back and move it, soon.
