[UPDATE] Sarah's Blog June 26 "happy endings"

Don't you just love happy endings?

Quote:
First of all, I have been utterly remiss at returning email over the last week, and I have to apologize. Things have been a little more than hectic lately. And on that note,

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!

My dear friends, we did it - we did it together, you and I. If not for your beautifully-constructed emails and well-crafted speeches, I am sure things would have gone all wrong.

So what did happen? Well, after the phone call we were in for more debate. There was a great turnout for the meeting, and it seemed like everyone wanted to have a say, which is fine, really! But it was like when you go to the doctor for a shot and they leave you in the waiting room for 3 hours. The longer you sit there, the more you dread the shot. I knew the vote was coming and I just wanted it to be over with. I grew impatient with the delay for that reason, and apparently so did the Wicked Witch of the Northeast, who forced a vote… by roll call. More delay! I thought I would pass out.

After all the votes were said and done, it looked like we had lost, and I truly despaired. The vote was 42-40 against us. Then as if out of nowhere, darling P. and her friend I. bustled in to cast their ballots! (It was at this point that I started crying, albeit softly, so forgive me if things are a bit hazy from here on out.)

The W.W.o.t.N.E., of course, protested I.'s being able to vote, saying she hadn't been in town long enough to form an opinion on the matter, much less be registered to vote on town business. As fate would have it, I. had her voter registration card in hand and practically threw it at the W.W.o.t.N.E.'s face. I have read that you can kill a man with a playing card. I wonder if the same is true for voter registration cards? You would have thought so, from the look that the W.W.o.t.N.E. shot the room when she saw that the card was valid. Bless I.'s heart - new in town and already dealing with the ugliest we have to offer. I need to buy that woman lunch.

So P. and I. voted and now the Ayes and the Nays were evened up, 42-42. This was like going overtime in a football championship. The room was tense. Would we have to go through this whole rigamarole again, after trying to drum up even more support? I cried even harder (although I'm fairly sure I managed to remain quiet). The only hope was for the mayor to cast a tie-breaker vote in our favor, as the mayor only gets to vote if there's a tie.

Well, who knows what the man was thinking? On the one hand, I hope that Agatha would haunt him for life if he dared cast his vote for tearing down what was dear to her. On the other, I'm sure he's in hip-deep with whatever scurrilous plans that odious corporation has for our fair city. I turned my watery eyes to watch what he would do. He sighed and looked pained as he rose to his feet… and just then, my Knight in Shining Armor comes riding in, accompanying the Fair Lady S., who, poor dear, looked exhausted. In all the excitement, she had forgotten to cast her vote. So she did, then. And the rest, as they say, is history.

We won! Victory is sweet, and I am at home amongst the bound pages, not web pages.

Thank you all for everything you have done. You really made the difference here. Your support has buoyed my heart into happiness heretofore unknown. And thanks, indeed, for all your letters of congratulations. I'm so sorry I haven't gotten back with you yet. I hope to catch up on my mail in the next week, or month, or even hopefully year. As it is now, I think I need to take another nap!
