I've read this whole thread, and I can't believe no one has mentioned this particular topic so far. I know what alot of people will say about this, but I really don't get it, so... I need to ask.

Puzzles and cooperation are fun and all, but this is a CONTEST... why are you giving everyone all the answers? Do you realize that according to the rules the first three people (from the US at least) based on the server's timestamp go to the finals? And that by helping everyone you're increasing the number of people who could potentially get to the end at the same time as you? Don't you think it would stink to lose a $110,000 prize by three seconds because you helped a zillion people by giving them all the answers? Do you realize you're giving answers to a zillion more people than just the ones posting here, there's a bunch just reading these too.

I just don't get it. The only reasons I can think of to post all these answers for everyone to grab are...

- You're hoping to win, but don't realize you're totally killing your chances by helping everyone else get to the finals instead of you. This is just plain silly. If you want to increase your chance of winning stop now!

- You know you can't (or probably won't) win because you're not elligble or just messing around, so you're just playing for fun, so you don't care if you post answers. This is not very cool to do to the people who are actually playing to win.

- You're thinking that because you know the answer posting it here will make you look smart or something. Feels good to know the answer and tease others with clues. You won't feel so smart when you lose out on the prize because the people you helped beat you to the last clue.

Sorry to sound like such a wet rag, but I, for one, would actually like to win. I'm at Pulau Jong and I've figured out every clue by myself... they're not that hard. Quit posting all the answers outright, or, at least post hints instead of the actual coords for petes sake. Sheesh.

This is a community site. The point of it is to help each other. If you don't want to read the solutions, I suggest you don't read this thread.

Since this is your first post, I'm guessing that you found ARGN based through this game. One of our creeds is that we never hog solves, just look at Perplexcity as an excellent example. I have also completed every puzzle on my own, but I've helped people that have asked for it. It's not that I don't want to win, it's that it's give and take, something that was proven with the DaVinci Code Google Challenge.

I would love to win the car BUT.....A), I don't have a passport and even if I got one I don't think I could travel to the finals as I don't have additional cash to pay for my own meals etc. B) I like the hunt and I hope that the person who does find it, takes care of it. The rules are very specific about WHO can play (no previous duii's, felony convictions, etc)
So I'm just here for the game.

So you feel that "help" means to just provide all the answers? When you "help" kids with homework do you teach them how to do the problems, or just give them the answers?

I think you missed my point. I don't care if I read the solutions... I solved them myself a few minutes after getting the email. My point was that anyone playing the game to win would not want others to read (be handed) the solutions.

Again, this is a community site. The point of this site is that we share our solutions amongst ourselves. It is not your place to dictate what is posted on these forums. If you don't have anything constructive to say, please feel free not to post here.

Just because you don't WANT other people to post here, doesn't give you the right to tell them not to. This site has been around for this exact purpose alot longer than just this one silly contest, and I seriously doubt its going to change it's ways because of one ignorant guest.

Thank you,
Daniel Gary

Ignorant as in... found this forum by accident and read the thread without realizing the aim of the site... yes, you're right. Sorry about that. At a quick glance to an outsider it simply appears to be yet another website dedicated to the idea of posting cheats (answers) to puzzles / games so that the rest of the world doesn't have to think and can just run to the end and claim "I finished!" Now I know better. Thanks for setting me straight Daniel Gary.

Ok, dhoule, listen up.
Cleary you could not have just "stumbled" upon this site, its not like they pay for advertising and for lack of a better word this is a back-water site, you where obviously "googling" to find something to do with the trail.
And i find it hard to believe that you are continuing to post replys purly because of you "moral stance" against this website.
And if you don't like it just leave.
And if you do leave, I think that I speak for all of us when I say, there will be no tears shed.
And if your so smart and don't need any of the help on this site, then I am sure I can contact the webmaster and instruct them on how to block you IP address from this site, so as not to "corrupt" your chances of winning Neutral

I am a new poster and have a few thoughts.

First, I too did not know what this site was for, just did a google search for "volvo pirate code" and found this site, the first of which seemed to be discussing this contest/game. (There are now several blogs up doing the same, including an official one created by volvo.) So veteran posters, please forgive us newbies who are ignorant, as I suspect many people have found this site in the last week in the same manner I did, unaware of the site's intentions or purpose. (To clarify, i realized this thread was a discussion/spoiler thread for this game. However, I did not know this entire site was, I was only concerned with this one thread). This site is exactly what I was looking for, a site that would help me with these hard clues! I need cheats Smile

Secondly, I only now figured out the tree puzzle in the forest, and by figure out I mean come to understand, through spoiler help, how the correct answer was solved. I found out my screen was too dark to see all the symbol pieces clearly, especially on the large dark tree that has the little #1 on it. I still cannot find any symbols on that tree. However, making my screen more bright helped me better see other symbols.

Third, I have come to realize that I am stupid and will never be quick enough or smart enough to win this whole thing when the true race happens on that final day in July. however, this is still fun so I will contribute if/when possible and more than likely beg for help the rest of the time if my questions go unanswered. Fun site!

p.s. I never picked up a map from volvo, i simply guessed the code "black pearl" to start the game a few days ago and it worked.

A few thoughts from a "veteran" of the UF forums (that title so does not apply to me):

This is a community site for cooperative solutions of puzzles in any ARG (Alternative Reality Game). I could go into the whole mythos of the ARG, but it would make this post MUCH longer than it is already. Let's just say, we work together here. Some people don't agree with that. That's their choice. Personally, I know there are times when I just don't get a given puzzle and I'd like a little help (or a lot of help if I get truly stuck). So, I come here. As a result, if I do solve a problem, I assist here on the board because I feel that it balances out the times I get help. While I don't presume to speak on behalf of all the people on UF, I suspect the majority feel the same way I do.

If I may, I would make a few suggestions:
1. For everyone (especially the "old hands" here at UF): Be patient. Be patient with the puzzles, the thread(s), and each other. It gains you nothing to be kind or cruel, but it makes the whole environment a little less nasty if you tend to be calm and collected.

2. Please use the spoiler tags. To all of the new players, welcome! This is a bit of a cultural thing for Unfiction and other ARG sites: don't post the answer "in the clear." Hide the answer behind a spoiler tag. Some people like to solve the puzzles themselves, and can get a little upset if the answer is just given to them (for those people, go back and read suggestion #1).

To do this, type "[ spoiler]" (without that first space) at the beginning of your hidden message, and "[/spoiler]" after the end of the information you want to hide. That way, if someone is just reading along they don't get puzzles revealed to them before they are done.

A personal request: if you get the solution, give a hint first before saying "the answer is X." I completely understand wanting to say "I figured this out first" and get the props for doing so. However, some of us just want a little nudge to figure out the puzzle.

3. New players: Before you post, SEARCH THE THREAD TO SEE IF YOUR QUESTION HAS BEEN ASKED! There is a button entitled Search at the top right of this page. Please use it.

You will probably want to change the "Forum" drop down box to " | |--News & Rumors" before you start your search. Chances are, your question has been asked and answered. Again, before you chew someone out because they've asked the same question for the 20th time, see suggestion #1.

That's funny too because I had, and had no plans on posting again... till you opened your trap. Others had spoke up and I had apologized... but you had to say something and keep it going, didn't you?

How nice of you to speak for everyone. You must be a politician.

You crack me up Very Happy If you knew what an IP address was you'd know that's a silly comment. Ever heard of DHCP?

Not to worry though, I won't be coming back, so you win (congratulations on your victory.) It was a major oversight on my part to post here without first researching what this site was about....

"Alternate Reality Gaming (also known as beasting, unfiction, or immersive fiction) is an interactive fusion of creative writing, puzzle-solving, and team-building, with a dose of role playing thrown in. It utilizes several forms of media in order to pass clues to the players, who solve puzzles in order to win pieces of the story being played out."
- Unfiction.com History page

Oh, but wait... that's not what you're doing here on this thread, is it? No ARG going on here. No creative writing pieces being handed out or an unfiction story line campaign. This particular thread is just for posting solutions to an internet marketing contest. Oh, but it's in the "Games, Rumors & Diversions" category, so that makes it okay. Any excuse to justify cheating... er... helping solve puzzles. Doesn't matter that News & Rumors is supposed to be about unfiction campaigns.

Whatever. Blah blah blah... I'm talking to the wall. I'm off my soap box for good and out of here.

Oh, and feel free to reply to this, but the "notify me when a reply is posted" box has been unchecked, so you'll be talking to the wall. Although... all those people you're speaking for are still out there... they might appreciate you speaking for them some more. Er... except for the ones that contacted me privately to say they agreed... and the ones who posted comments about how they stumbled on this site accidentally too... they might not like you speaking for them... but they might get a kick out of watching you talk to the wall Very Happy

Have fun storming the castle Very Happy

never mind! it was the space i had put in. i was just wondering, can people stop posting the answers because it it a individual hunt and giving away the answers is not right. helping and guiding i don't mind as it allows the individual to progress themselves but giving away the solution is bypassing the hard work! sorry for rambling, jus tmy point, great forum, just cut down on the actual answers!

No, the point i'm making is that there are some people trying to get through this the hard way and, by posting the solutions, it allows some people to breeze through it - who can't be bothered to do the hard work - which is unfair to the rest of us, cheating us out of the hard graft.
