The folks at irc.usrv.de #eon8 have found this related wiki article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eons

Some phrases stand out, such as:

Currently, the company's website is running a contest which will award $15,000 to help finance a goal of one of the entrants over the age of 50. The drawing is to be held in July 2006. [2]

or

and a software engineer skilled in designing Internet applications. [1]

Just our two cents.

Info on tomorow.

The countdown ends as July 1 begins. A blogger called CEREBRUS, who is thought to be affiliated with eon8.com posted this in response to a question about what the websites purpose was

It'd seem pretty naive but what about putting in "shadowsun50" as the user and "9I95" as the code? I'd do it myself but I heard of some link that went to the site that involved a virus and shock pictures such as goatse and tubgirl showing up and moving around the screen and, well, frankly that scares the shit out of me...

I've joined this hunt a bit late but im still gonna try figuring this one out. Throwing in the air tho, has anyone thought that the dots on the map are deployment locations of whatever projects they have finished?

Why has nobody turned the ES-12 strings into a .COM or. EXE?

If you go to the stats page and right click a little red dot and view picture, when it comes up you can view the page source and it looks somthing like ASCII. It won't let me paste the charecters, but this is the dot image i clicked.

http://www.eon8.com/spot/s5.gif
open it and view page source. It might be nothing, but it could be somthing...

i just spent the last hour or so reading through this entire thread (yes 18 pages and counting) and heres my opinion on it all:

    - it doesn't seem like an advertising ploy at all, although it smells like an ARG
    - it could be a more advanced version of something like http://www.hackthissite.org/ (aka a challenge thing)
    - whatever it is, its keeping us all entertained, so why worry? Very Happy

and as for the CEREBRUS character that posted on the wiki area, i really don't know what to think.

when all is said and done; i'll throw my chips in. i've got nothing better to do during the summer Very Happy

    PS: i'll be registering shortly.

Same ascii in every page, including /spot

There may be significance to this, but my guess is its simply erroneous.

got something

ok ok ok following what tenchi said about the blip, I googled one of the codings i got from the page source and this page came up

http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci212191,00.html

if you read it says

"A GIF89a graphics file is an image formatted according to Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) Version 89a (July, 1989). There was an earlier Version, 87a, from May of 1987, but most images you will see on the Web have probably been created in the newer format. One of the chief advantages of the newer format is the ability to create an animated image that can be played after transmitting to a viewer.page that moves - for example, a twirling icon or a banner with a hand that waves or letters that magically get larger. In particular, an animated GIF is a file in the Graphics Interchange Format specified as GIF89a that contains within the single file a set of images that are presented in a specified order."

---july.... and please note...the countdown ends july first...could it be celebrating something computer wise? technological... maybe ground breaking? just a thought to toss around[/b]

About the dots, I just posted this over at the eon8whatthehellisit.blogspot.com blog:

thought that was interesting so I dug a little deeper. Take the dot which appears as the southernmost dot in South America. Its URL is: http://www.eon8.com/spot/s73.gif

That implies it's a specific dot, right? Well, you can type in any number, and even remove the "s" of "s73.gif" and still get the same dot. You can remove the s73.gif file name altogether and just leave it as http://www.eon8.com/spot and you will get the same red dot.

I'm not sure what this means besides the people behind the website want users to think that each dot specifically corresponds to the location that it covers, but they obviously don't.

My guess is that this is the beginning of some type of advertising campaign.

Interesting stuff.

It'd be kinda helpful if we all gathered in a chat room as well as the forums, the countdown is only less then a day away. One is already set up and has some people already, irc.usrv.de at #eon8. Should be interesting to see how this turns out.
