Even if it's a marketting strategy, I doubt it'd work. The Phantom; a gaming console that hopes to compete with the 360/PS3/wii.

Even if someone sees "Phantom" all over eon8, I doubt they'd buy it then and there. A gaming console relies on games, and I've yet to see anyone seriously develop anything for the Phantom. Besides, didn't the Phantom kind of flop a while ago?

The only hype Phantom would have going for it would be this site (if it were indeed related to Infinium Labs).

I somehow doubt it's for the Phantom, but we'll see.

As you change your clock, every time you add a day to the time, it goes between 0 days left (on the countdown) and 1 day left on the countdown. Dont know if that means anything

Well Viral marketing is not exactly about just selling your product. Its about making it known. If it is indeed the Phantom, like it was said they have to compete with 3 major companies that are popular with the masses atm. This gives them a chance to sneak through and gain interest, as if you do any kind of search hundreds of sites pop up with eon8 wondering wtf it is.

Look at what happened with Halo 2 and Ilovebees.

The issue I have with it being about the Phantom was I've heard lately about that company having funding issues and was also in court at the time (bout a month or so ago, maybe this last month). So, how they'd have money to begin with for a ARG/Viral advertisement doesn't make much sense, as well as court issues.

I'm not saying the strategy is wrong, I'm just noting that it wouldn't be that effective for Phantom.

Halo pretty much had a guaranteed fanbase, even after the first one. ILB was fairly fun and interactive as well. eon8 is mysterious, sure, and it might work for something that has basis to sell.

I think a lot of the gaming industry knows about the "Phantom" too, but mostly the thing's a big joke. This gives them a chance, maybe to the audience... but still, shouldn't they be working on maybe, I don't know, forming contracts and getting games announced for their system?

So true. Its only one theory tho. We'll find out soon enough. In the mean time all we can do is keep searching.

'ello. i discovered the eon8.com website through that ytmnd, http://eon8theinvestigation.ytmnd.com/. naturally i was curious and looked at everything i could find on the site. not much information i could glean from there, especially not since i don't know a damn thing about hacking and whatnot.

now, any of you that have searched for info regarding eon8 know that you're not going to find much of anything anywhere other than on a handful of forums. i've tried google and msn, and gotten nearly zilch. i happened across this forum by using yahoo. i don't know what unfiction.com is about yet because i've been caught up reading this thread from the first post to the last. but that's beside the point. there's a stub of an entry on wikipedia, but it doesn't offer anything that everyone interested doesn't know at this point.

obviously it's not the work of organized terrorists (or shit, even one lousy terrorist) because, even though it's difficult to discover, the way it's designed makes it far too suspicious and naturally makes people talk. really, what kind of idiot terrorists would have a countdown available to the public? it could have been created by some nutball or a group of nutballs, but that doesn't seem to jibe with the normal behavior of most nutballs (excluding scientologists) in that they typically like to let everyone know what weirdness they think and try to persuade people with whatever they think supports it.

i would be inclined to think it's some sort of marketing gimmick, except that not much has been done to raise awareness of it in different forms of media. i mean, if this is in fact part of an advertising campaign, i would consider it a failure if only because relatively few people are aware of eon8.com at all.

whatever it is, we'll soon find out Very Happy

also, i took a look at infiniumlabs.com and if they're behind it, they're not telling. if they are, they suck. for real.

The hidding of the idenity of even with WhoIs database kind of gets me wondering.

Some hacker groups would pull shit crap just for attention.

There is also a chance that it is bored college kids trying to see if they can start a new roumor on the web.

The forums the cryptic messages have been posted are also where younger computer users hang out.

I actually disagree. By using this website they would have hit an audience that isnt going to be glued to the mainstream of TV, Magazines and billboards. I mean look at us. Most are just sitting infront of a computer pondering wtf this is about. So boom you just advertised to one subculture. You at the same time launch ads worldwide on Television, magazines, radio and put up bilboards on the same date that the product count down is reached.

You just hit millions with flash advertising ;3

And about Halo 2 hitting those that would automatically buy it: Think of the thousands it hit that wouldnt normally have bought it without the ilovebees campaign.

Hello, and welcome to Unfiction! Smile

Unfiction is an alternate reality gaming (ARG) forum. You can find a lot of information about alternate reality games at Wikipedia, Imbri's ARG Quickstart Guide, or the Alternate Reality Gaming Network.

Basically, an ARG is a game that tells a story using multiple platforms (most often, websites are the primary story delivery medium, but media as diverse as Euchre, live events, payphones, and clothes have all been used). ARGs usually take place in real-time -- that is, they're not like a computer game that you can start and end at any time you like -- and usually encourage community play as well as individual play through their design. One of their more unique features is that they usually feature audience interaction with their characters.

ARGs are often used as marketing -- in fact, many of the most well-known ARGs have been promotions for a company or product.

They work somewhat differently from traditional advertising. If you're interested, there's a discussion of ARGs and marketing here.

Actually, although it's changing as more and more of the teams running ARGs announce their identities immediately and do interviews, press releases, etc., it used to be almost standard practice for the team creating an ARG, and usually the company sponsoring it, to deny a connection until after the game was over. Wink

So, so far, it looks fairly standard for an ARG.

heh, i knew i'd get drawn into this. while it's true that marketing of this sort is most likely aimed at, well, the online subculture of people that spend huge amounts of time discussing a mysterious website like this, do you suppose it will make anyone want to buy their product? it's pretty unnecessary if, at the end of the countdown, they launch advertisements on television, in magazines, etc. it worked for halo because, as someone else already said, there's a huge fanbase for that to begin with. it was just icing on the cake. if eon8.com turns out to be part of an advertising strategy for the phantom, it's not going to do much of anything to help them compete against all the other gaming platforms out there already that many people are loyal to. eon8.com offers practically no clues as to what it's about. being somewhat mysterious is fine, but i have a feeling that if this turns out to be hype created by infinium labs, everyone's going to be disappointed. just like i am every time i try to shoot the duck to win a free ipod. sigh.
