[EVENT] San Francisco - Event Planning, Info, and Parties

Who's going? It'd be nice to know who's going to be there so that we can arrange for lunch/dinner/over drinks meet ups. The store is nicely located across the street from the Oakland Convention Center, so there is quite a nice selection of restaurants and bars to choose from.

When?
Friday, August 11th 2-9
Sunday, August 13th, 10-5

Getting there
EndGame is right around the corner from the 12th Street/City Center BART station (red/yellow lines). To give you and idea of how close it is, Google.com/maps gives you direction in FEET. Go there and enter the following 2 addresses for a map:

BART Station: 1245 Broadway Oakland, CA 94602
EndGame: 921 Washington Street Oakland, CA 94607-4003

Parking. There is all day parking for $1 at a lot on the corner of 10th and Jefferson (2 blocks away) which is the best parking deal you're going to find anywhere in SF.

I'd love to go to the pre and post events but don't have time on the Friday after I arrive, have some errands.

And will have landed in Los Angeles roughly about the same time the Sunday one starts!

I will be at both, though I'm not sure as to exact times yet. Probably midday Friday, and the same Sunday if I get up Wink

Who's interested in meeting up for breakfast pre-Live Event?

I've seen a couple of threads floating around about meet ups. I'll go and see if I can find a couple of eateries within walking distance.

EDIT - merged threads concerning SF as HOLY CRAP YOU DO NOT NEED ONE FOR EACH MEAL. - SG

Flying into San Francisco/Oakland for the live event?

Planning on flying into San Francisco/Oakland for the live event but haven't quite got everything sorted out -- like how to actually get to the Palace of Fine Arts?

Post your questions and woes here and maybe some of the locals can give you some pointers and guidance.

BART (the local commuter rail) will get you from either SFO or OAK to the pre- and post- events, but will only take you to the Financial District in San Francisco (closest point to the Palace of Fine Arts). From there, you'll have to take 1-2 connections (depending on where you are staying) to get to the Palace/Fisherman's Wharf.

Cabs within the city are an option, but they aren't as plentiful as they are in some citys (e.g., New York)

If you're driving to the event, keep in mind that while the Palace of Fine Arts has free parking, it also shares it with the Exploratorium, which opens at 10:00 (hint for the kids). You also can't count on parking on the street (general rule for SF-proper).

EDIT - ONE THREAD. ONNNNEEEE THREAD. All other details and planning that needs to occur between individuals can occur via private messages. - SG

The bus that drops off closest to the Palace is the 30 or 30X, its basically at the end of the route.

I've tried the 76 but seemingly missed the stop/driver ignored me...

Here's a really good map of bus services etc.

There's New Yorker's Buffalo Wings on 2499 Lombard.
I'm just searching up places I've been and remember its near the exploratorium. As far as a quick search on the web goes, it does breakfast.

[Email] PXC San Francisco Update

SF Event wrote:

Hi Geoff,

There are now only ten days left until the Perplex City San Francisco Connection
live event, and preparations are continuing in both Perplex City and Mind Candy.
We've lined up a host of puzzles and games for you to play on Saturday August
12th, and we have some extra details that you'll find useful:

THE ESSENTIAL STUFF

The event will officially begin at 11am (PDT) on Saturday August 12th with an
opening presentation at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, with a city-wide
scavenger hunt starting immediately afterwards. At the same time, the online
scavenger hunt will start worldwide. Getting answers from the puzzles in both
hunts will help activate the new data link to Perplex City, and unlock new
features of the RFID game taking place in the Theatre.

The scavenger hunts will be over by around 3:30pm, and we'll then hold a closing
presentation to celebrate the activation of the new data link. The whole event
should finish by 4:30pm.

For the two weeks leading up to the event, Academy puzzle scribe Von Lubik is
writing a blog exclusively at http://von.1up.com with a mini-game that could
provide a clue to the puzzles on the day. You'll also be able to check out
competitions, interviews and blogs from 1UP staff and players at the Official
1UP.com Perplex City Club (http://officialperplexcity-club.1up.com/) which
anyone can join. Read about the partnership between Perplex City and 1UP:
http://1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3152526

PLAYERS IN SAN FRANCISCO...

We advise that you arrive at the Palace of Fine Arts at around 10:30am, in order
to register. After the presentation, we'd like you to split up into teams, and
each team will receive a set of scavenger hunt puzzles.

If you'd like to know the way to the Palace, it so happens that it's right next
door to the Exploratorium, who already have a great Directions page, bless 'em:
http://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/directions.html

Many of the puzzles will require travel across the city, so we strongly suggest
that you bring a car or bike, or are prepared to take public transport (bus or
taxi). While the Palace has plenty of free parking on site, the same can't be
said for the rest of the city, so please bear that in mind. It's also a *very
good idea* for all players to bring a good map of San Francisco with them.

We'll be at the Palace throughout the day with a range of fun activities from
our event partners, including 1UP.com and Buy.com. Perplex City puzzle cards and
exclusive event T-shirts will be on sale, with tables set up for card swapping.
You'll also be able to buy food and drink from the Palace.

After the event, there'll be an opportunity to swap war stories and meet some of
the Mind Candy staff at the Marina Sports Bar and Grill (2400 Lombard Street,
http://tinyurl.com/rvnuu).

Last but certainly not least, our event partners Endgame will be holding two
special pre-game and post-game swapmeet parties at their store in Oakland
(http://www.endgameoakland.com/) on Friday 11th, 2pm-9pm and Saturday 13th,
10am-5pm. They'll be a great opportunity to plan strategy for the event and swap
hints, tips and cards from wave 4!

PLAYERS ONLINE...

Don't worry, we haven't forgotten about you! Shortly before the event, we'll be
setting up a special website (and sending out another email) explaining how
you'll be able to take part, but we can tell you now that there'll be an online
scavenger hunt that'll require all your surfing and Googling skills. Like the
players in San Francisco, your hunt will also begin shortly after 11am PDT (7pm
in the UK).

We'll also be providing a live webcast of proceedings in the Palace, and a chat
room so you can heckle the players there...

...AND FINALLY

The San Francisco Connection is not your normal scavenger hunt. It will test
your speed, your intuition, your stamina and your puzzle-solving abilities.
It'll also be the biggest and most ambitious live event we've held, by far.

But remember, the most important thing is to have fun. It's a game!

See you in San Francisco,

Mind Candy and the Perplex City Academy

EDIT - merged with preexisting information regarding PXC SF event. - SG

I'm sign-up for the Saturday event.
I'm planning to stop-by Endgame on Sunday, then likely get lunch at House of Chicken and Waffles.

We can't all make it to San Fransisco... T_T

Sooo, who's playing online on the day?

Also, is anyone willing to team up online? there's always strength in numbers.

EDIT - no, i'm sorry. Only one thread for SF. Merged with preexisting thread(s) - SG

SF Event

Hello all.

I am trying to get up to speed on PerplexCity as I live in the SF Bay area and have registered to play the games on the 12th.

I am searching this forum now to see if anyone has set up groups in advance. I know of at least two other ARG folk who will be spectators for the fun.

I am looking forward to meeting a whole new set of ARGonauts!

The whole thing with teams confuses me a little. Are we supposed to come up with teams beforehand or will we be assigned (or otherwise create) teams on the day of the event? I have to confess that I won't have a car and my knowledge of the city is pretty low.

In other news, I'll be arriving Friday afternoon, departing Sunday evening, and staying at the hotel across the way from Endgame, so hope to be part of the pre- and post- event swap parties.

I'm assuming that while the games may be spread out over the city, they will focus on specific areas. Easy to get to etc.

Here's a list of possible locations that I think could be involved, bearing in mind that we only have 4 and a half hours.

Golden Gate Park
Haight Street
Union Square
Sony Metreon
Possibly a trek up to the bridge but defo not across it (I've been there, its not worth it and takes about 2 hours round trip on foot)
Fisherman's Wharf
Chinatown

Presidio Park is an option, but its so easy to get lost in there...

Exploratorium?

TransAmerica Pyramid is another possible site for scavenging.

I went to Endgame this week to scout around. It is about a mile from my apartment in Oakland. Sounds like they are just doing retail-related events...card swapping and puzzle solving.

So who else is coming? PM me if you want to try to get together one of those days.

I'm willing to do online stuff, if I'm available.
