[UPDATE] Sarah's Blog July 5 - Worried about Dale

Quote:
I'm a little worried about my friend.

He was in the building on Monday and seemed really disconnected from things. Maybe he was mumbling something under his breath? Perhaps he wasn't even saying anything out loud, but I got the sense that there was a lot of activity under the surface. Half-formed metaphors come to mind of sharks under the still water, or lush foliage growing on top of quicksand. A stout-looking log that, when you turn it over, is awash in unspeakable slimy skittering insects.

In any event, his one and only out-loud topic of conversation had to do with going into the basement and opening up a wall(?). I don't think he's getting enough sleep. I probably should have spent more time finding out what he was talking about but work has been hopping since the big vote and it's all I can do to remember that human beings do, in fact, need to eat meals in order to survive (and damn, I think I forgot to have dinner tonight). I'm afraid I put him off, saying that maybe Wednesday would be a better day, fully intending to hunt him down at the town picnic in the meantime to see what's making him tick. No sign of him yesterday, though.

I thought I saw him at work again today but my gracious, he's so pale and drawn. He left before I could say hi, and again I fear I didn't make enough of an effort to stop him because I'm just so blessedly busy.

Do I look and sound like that to other people, too? I hope my public mask is more firmly attached than that. My poor friend. Is it even possible for me to save a drowning man when my own head is barely above water?

The world is a much dimmer place.
