[Trailhead??] July OXM Page 74

See the attached file to read the item titled: #6: I STILL LOVE BEES!

This item appears in the July issue of Offical Xbox Magazine on page 74.

Granted it appears in a section that is called Xbox Live Arcade: The Next Generation, where Dan Amrich (words) and Gary Cribb (design) makes evolutionary ideas about how to improve Xbox Live in the future; but I thought I'd post it to see if anyone might think it's a trailhead to something larger as the article hints.

I appologize for the file size but the page had to be scanned in at a high resolution so that the text was readable.

The Gist: Xbox Live Arcade could be the stage for an on going ARG.

That looks interesting, but I doubt they'd do an ARG over XBL, at least not the way they are suggesting in the article. If they decide to contact someone based on how many XBLA achievements they have, they'll probably always be contacting ST The King (the current leader in the world with achievements). If not, then it seems the game would be intrusive. How do they know that it's not just by chance that someone meets the criteria of being contacted, and maybe they don't want to play? And if they recieve a threatening message, they might not even be aware that it's an ARG, or even know what an ARG is. It seems to me that they wouldn't have a way of knowing who's playing the ARG part of the games, and who's just really good at XBLA games.

Having said that, it's a really cool idea. I'm a 360 junkie as it is. Playing an ARG on it would give me another excuse. Smile Although I'm not sure there's anything in the article that would lead to anything. I'm trying to think of all of the XBLA games I've played and if there are any oddities about them. I'll let you know if I think of something.

Achievements can't be gotten by one person; they have to be a milestone anyone can hit. So think more like Majestic, where when you hit a certain point in the plot, then the game knew to send you a note or an IM or what have you. Same concept - if you unlock an easter egg or get to level three in one of the games, that earns you an Achievement, and the appearance of that Achievement triggers a step in the ARG.

Different from how you read it. Smile

That PDF scan does contain some copyrighted images, and might not last, so I thought I would transcribe just the relevant column.
Quote:
#6: I Still Love Bees!

Remember ilovebees? During the promotion of
Halo 2, players loved searching websites, going
to real-world locations, getting cryptic emails,
even picking up random payphones to get the
next clue in a long, twisted mystery plot -- all
part of a new genre called alternate-reality games
(ARGs). The current hot examples are Perplex
City
, which mixes Mensa-style mental puzzles
with secret blogs and a real-world treasure hunt,
and Edoc Laundry, a mystery told in T-shirts (yes,
really) that was created by ilovebees alumni.

Arcade could be the perfect delivery
medium for a similar game: A game programmer
disappears under mysterious circumstances.
Turns out he was trying to reveal a conspiracy
by planting subtle hints in his games, which are
slowly released as Arcade titles. Each one features
not only enjoyable gameplay, but also hidden
easter eggs that are pieces of a larger puzzle.
(Atari did this 20 years ago with the Swordquest
series of games {Earthworld, Fireworld, et al.}
on the 2600.) Trouble is, the folks who have the
most to lose if the truth gets out are aware of
what you've found, because your growing list
of Achievements is sending up warning flags.
That leads to players getting cryptic, perhaps
threatening, text and voice messages via Xbox
Live. (And isn't that video camera coming out
soon? Hmmm.) Make Xbox.com's forums the
official home of following the trail.

Of course, ARGs work best when they evolve
naturally. Microsoft wouldn't be able to announce
to the world, "Hey, we're launching an ARG,
so, um, look here for the first clues!" Such a
game would have to unfold at its own pace, with
players noting the peculiarities and putting the
pieces together for themselves, identifying the
trail as they walk it. Then again, who's to say
something like this hasn't already started...?

(BTW, next time, could you maybe crop the image so the attachment isn't unnecessarily large?)

Right, in that sense I guess it could work. I was thinking along the lines of only one message gets sent to the first person to get all the achievements in a particular game and it's kinda left up to him to dig further. It could work the way you described it, though.

My appologies but I didn't have the software to crop a PDF and I was in a hurry at the time. Thanks for the transcribe.

If an ARG would happen on the XBOX or XBOX 360, it would be extremely limited.

Officially, web browsing does not occur on either of these platforms, so they would be limited to real-world interactions or content delivered over X-Box Live.

It cannot be assumed that people who have an X-Box / 360 also have a computer.

This article is a cool "What if", but it's not ready yet.

The clues inside the XBLA games could be URLs. (which of course would require a computer as you pointed out).
Also, You can now send messages to gamertags from Xbox.com.

But it could be assumed that people who play ARGs and have an Xbox 360 also have a computer, cause it's kind of hard to play an ARG without one.

Just playing Devil's advocate. Smile

that sounds intriguing... I like the idea. If the game contacts people who hit certain achievements/milestones in various new arcade games, the gamers could receive the same message, or they could be different (though they couldn't each be unique and necessary for furthering the plot, since as we know, not every 360 owner has a computer or plays ARGs).
Kind of like PXC, there are rare and common cards, not every single individual card is necessary, but everyone working together can collect and record each card type. Same with these Arcade 'milestones'... users receive different messages, sometimes the same, but catalogued together would further the plot.

Even then it could open up to our 'regular' ARG world of general internet use, real life interaction, etc...

I can definitely see it being possible.

Though in order to retain the game's fun factor - replayability, and enjoyment for non-ARGers, I'd assume the achievements may or may not be secret, and definitely not exclusive to the ARG (as opposed to game achievements themselves), but even then, who says plot has to be furthered by users unlocking achievements? If the game is on Live, just as Bungie keeps track of game data, the game could send off info to the PMs of which gamers, for example, finds an item in an alley at a certain time, and send them a plot milestone...

possibilities are endless Smile
