[META] A thank-you idea for the PMs

If you are a PM, please stop reading because if we do this at all, it should be a surprise, mmkay? Smile

/me waits.

Are you gone yet?

Okay. Going to spoiler this to prevent spying PMs from accidentally seeing it.

Updated! Please read after the spoilered section.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I was thinking it would be kind of neat if those who were so inclined were to write little thank-yous on a playing card, and those playing cards could then be put in a collage-like arrangement with pictures from the live events (perhaps with a nice arrangement of a chip from each city in the middle) and framed.

Just some thoughts/suggestions if anyone is interested in doing it:

--We would probably need to use Sharpies to write on playing cards. For those who wanted to write longer messages, Sharpie makes some very fine-tipped pen-like markers.

--Those writing on red-suited cards could use a black marker, but those writing on black-suited cards (or at least higher-numbered black-suited cards) might need to use a metallic Sharpie to get it to show up.

--For those who have nifty/unique decks of cards (I have a reproduction of a 17th-century French deck that's pretty darn cool-looking, for example) but who obviously aren't going to want to ruin their set by writing on a card and sending it away, or for those who don't want to ruin a normal deck of cards or buy a set just to use one card, you could scan it in and print it on some good-quality paper and it would probably look just as nice.

All right, I've gotten enough response to this that I'm going ahead with setting it up. Cortana has kindly agreed to help with this, so we now have a Plan.

We don't want everyone sending in red cards, and we were thinking it would be neat to have a full deck, if possible, so I'm going to put the full list of cards here, and you can PM me, or post in this thread, to sign up for a particular card.

If you have no card preference, but still want to participate, PM me or post in this thread, and I'll randomly assign you a card.

Okay, so here's the procedure.

1. PM me or post in the thread to sign up for a card/be assigned a card.

2. Cortana or I will send you a card to sign, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. The card may be a normal playing card, or it may be a clear card. Please sign/write a little note on the card with a Sharpie or other permanent marker, drop it in the envelope, and send it back.

If you have a special card you'd like to use, please let me know, and instead of sending a card, I'll just send you my address.

If you are overseas, Cortana or I would be happy to pay the postage to get the card to you if you are willing to pay the postage to send it back. Otherwise, if you'd like to either sign a card, scan it in, and email me the scan, or use a scan from one of the decks I (or possibly HitsHerMark) can put up, either print it on high quality paper and sign it, or use a program like Paint or Photoshop to sign it, and send it back, we can do it that way.

3. If you have a particular picture you'd like included in the collage, please either PM me with a link to it, or mention it in a post to this thread. I'm not sure how much of a response we'll get, and I'm not sure how much room there will be for pictures, but I will try to accomodate everyone's request within reason.

When it's all done, I will take pictures and post them so everyone can see it before we send it to the PMs.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You could always scan and print out an interesting playing card and then write on it. I have a good collection of interesting decks you can see here; some of these I own and some I do not. Not all of my decks are on there (like the FFVII decks or the GUN deck for instance) If you would like a scan from a particular deck PM me and I'll see what I can do for ya if I have it. Smile

This is nice. Sadly, I already emailed my own thank you to the various PMs and earlier I sent a pic of a card code to Lucky saying "thank you" and "RIP Lucky" - so I won't join in this one.

But thanks to the PMs.

And to SpaceBass for hosting this site for us to play!

I'm in depending on when you are likely to want to give this to them.

A couple more ideas/thoughts.

(And again, all of this is contingent on actual community interest -- this would look silly rather than cool if only 5-10 people did it.)

First of all, this should in no way be taken as mutually exclusive with thanking the PMs in any other way anyone sees fit. I'm sure a lot of us want to say more to them than would fit on a playing card. I just thought it would be nice to have some sort of thank-you gift representing the community and not just individual players. Smile

Second, great idea, HitsHerMark!

This might also make it easier for people who live overseas, or people who don't want to have to mail cards.

If possible, I think it would be nicest to have a thank you written on a real playing card, because just from an aesthetic standpoint I think it would look cooler than a scanned-and-printed card.

But, there are several possible options I'm seeing:

1) Use an actual greeting card. Write a note or just sign it, and send it to me to be used in the collage.

2) Do the same, but email me a high-quality scan.

3) I have a number of unusual decks (examples to follow), and I'd be happy to scan the complete decks in so people could print them out on photo-paper, sign them, and mail them to me, or scan them back in and email them to me, and I'll print them out.

The latter two options are a way that overseas people could avoid the cost of mailing something to the U.S., so that might be a good way to go.

Also, I'd like to include photos, and if you wanted to either send me your favorite photo with your card, or give me a link to it, I'd make sure to put your card by the photo.

Okay, some ideas for card-scans for people who can't/don't want to use real cards:

Going to just link to this first one, since it's big, but I didn't want to shrink it because the detail is nicely visible.

This is a reproduction of a 19th-century French deck that I love, and I think would look cool mixed in with more normal-looking cards.

The Gun Deck.

These are transparent cards that are designed to float, should you ever need to play poker in a hot tub.

I had two decks of these, but Dog got ahold of one of them, and there's only about a third of it without teeth holes now. I'd be willing to send out a few of these to people to sign and return, because I think aesthetically they'd be a cool addition to the mix and I was only keeping them around as a sort of backup for the other deck. (And because I just didn't feel like throwing out the good ones. Smile This is a better use though.)

These would probably be good for longer messages, as there's a lot of white space.

Got a bunch of decks of these little tiny cards for party favors a while back, and I thought I might scatter a few of them in just for aesthetic appeal/to cover up holes.

I'd be willing to scan in cards from those decks for people who can't/don't want to mail real ones, and it sounds like HitsHerMark has some pretty cool decks too.

Well, it's not going to be this month (if there's enough interest to even do it at all), and depending on how quickly people got stuff to me, I'd estimate that most likely it would be after Christmas.

Re: [META] A thank-you idea for the PMs

Count me in. I have two jokers from the deck I won at Lucky's DC event, and I'd be glad to handle off one of them to an interested party.

Group favors, large favors if you will, are important and I think it's good that we ALL participate, even if it's just to sign a card and send it to Phae.

Tom

I'm in, for sure. Although my note will only be written on a standard playing card (No GUN preorder cards in Canada Sad )

I'll take the 4 of Diamonds (since that's the only playing card I can find around my immediate computer desk area

Count me in. Very Happy
I'm doing my own shadow box for a keepsake and would love to be able to thank the PMs properly.

That's quite all right. We need normal standard playing cards too, or it will look a bit odd. Smile

PM me for my address when you're ready to send it.

Would you believe Linens 'n' Things?

Yeah. Neither would I.

Which was why I more or less had to buy them immediately.

I may have some scooby-doo cards around here somewhere that I wouldn't mind busting up.

I'll see if I can find them... And I must remember to drop by my local Linins and Things.

Well, if you don't want to, that's fine. But let me reiterate that this isn't intended to be a substitute for personal thanks/emails/whatever, should you want to give them. This is just supposed to be a thank-you from the group (or at least a representative sampling thereof, since I doubt we'll be able to get everyone...), and so even if you've met them and thanked them or emailed them, it'd still be nice to have your name with everyone else's. Smile

Fantastic idea, Phaedra. I'm definitely in.
May I ask for the 2 of Hearts?
