how about we get the link to a webcam, and the first one there is the winner??

I've had a sneaking feeling for a while that there is a webcam keeping an eye on where the cube is buried. I've also wondered how the earth-based 3P agents are going to come into it: seems a shame to waste these characters.

I'd say there's a chance that the finale will not be a simple "solve a puzzle, find the location", but more along the lines of a live event. I hope so, and one that requires a team-based approach - online perhaps. This would include non-UK players more actively (sorry, but I'm convinced the cube is based in the UK, for practical reasons and because of the reference in the Naomi Alderman article in The Telegraph).

The rules and conditions at perplexcity.com state that:

Quote:
By order of Camryn Scott, the Perplex City Authorities have authorised the release of £100,000 ("the Retrieval Reward") to Mind Candy as funds to be disbursed to the first successful participant (or group of participants) who present the Receda Cube, in person, to Mind Candy authorised personnel at a location of Mind Candy's choosing.

So no chance of keeping the Cube unless you want to pass up the cash.

There might be a lot more to the Retrieval than just digging up the Cube. Personally, I think it would be great to have a further element of challenge, perhaps being chased by 3P agents on the way to the handover. (Though a heist of the cube from Mind Candy would lead nicely into a Series 2 based on a hunt for the Cube in PXC, giving the virtual treasure-hunt mentioned above).

Not long now until we find out, I guess.

How about, since we're a loving community, splitting the reward?

£100,000 split between the 38017 registered players is about £2.60 each. Enough for a pack for next season.

Can't say fairer than that? Very Happy

How about this for a bit of history for all you young 'uns?

All of 15 months ago when we first started discussing the somewhat controversial idea (although not unique) of a prize. Seems like longer.

predictions

I predict that a player (or players) from unfiction finally solves the puzzle, finds the cube and that we all celebrate!

I also predict that before that happens we will continue to have posts from:
people complaining about people collaborating
people complaining about people not collaborating
people complaining about "how unfair _________ is"
people predicting that the community will fall apart under stress
people predicting that the community will not fall apart under stress, citing historical proof in support of their point
as well as all the posts from everyone just playing the game and having a great time enjoying their hobby.

A final prediction, we are all going to realize how much we miss GuyP as a moderator before the game is over.

One small point: I recall Adrian being very clear way back at ARGFest in NYC a year ago when the cards were just released (Wave 1) that no one has to purchase cards to find the cube (although Mind Candy wants you to buy the cards and enjoy solving them.) [/i][/quote]

Finding the cube

I believe the 'I found it' page that was linked to from the current Newsletter has answered a number of questions that we had about locating the cube and claiming the prize.

It would appear that the finder will be needing to exactly describe unique markings on the face of the artifact. This would seem to mitigate against what I had always hoped would be a valid option which is for the 'finder' to be able to exactly locate the cube to Mind Candy without having to physically front up and dig it out of the ground.

If this does actually pan out to be the way in which the cube is recovered and the prize claimed, I think that in all honesty I will be disappointed NO MATTER WHERE the Cube is located.

The search thus far has either implicitly or in some cases explicitly claimed to be fairly egalitarian - noone had to buy cards, noone had to attend live events, noone had to participate online etc. The basing of the events using primarily the Internet as it's medium, has, timezones aside - meant that anyone anywhere can participate for free (or virtually for free).

The disconnect between the leaderboard and the actual 'Hunt for the Cube' only goes to re-inforce this equality. Yes you CAN buy the Cards, attend the Live events in San Francisco/London/New York and get the points - but these make no difference to your likelihood of finding the cube.

Bringing the 'End Game' down to who can physically get to location X and dig brings this whole structure crashing down completely. And I say that even if the items turns out to be in my sector of the globe. Once someone is actually REQUIRED to invest significant amounts of time or money just to PARTICIPATE it essentially becomes a game of who has the most available resources.

Yes some do participate just for the fun of solving puzzles, others for the bragging rights of the leaderboard, some just like me because they are obsessive compulsive and obsessed by 'completing things' - but let us be frank - the BIGGEST marketing technique used for this is that banner headline: LOST THE CUBE - REWARD <Insert Amount in appropriate currency>. There are more than a few players who are participating ONLY for that reason, and I would wager few who participate for other reasons that do not have that in the back of their minds at some point.

I hear, and sometimes from people who I respect and have greatly admired from a far, commentary that boils down to 'it's only Internet whiners', or 'those who are not into the game as just a game' who are complaining - and I feel that they are being more than a little parochial and possibly even hypocritical in their comments. I would dearly love to see the state of these boards if the cube is dug up in a back paddock in Toowomba - but I doubt that I will.

I was a little suprised by the terms and conditions

Still who knows what they will do. It could be multiple stages of finding, with the final six flown to london for the final puzzle.

Just going to be wait and see I guess.

I find the possibility of a reward, however intangible, allows me to dedicate loads of time which otherwise I might tell myself was "pointless", or let's be honest, it allows me to tell my partner that there's some point to me being on the computer when I could be preparing breakfast.

Yes, if they've had a day trip to see Last of the Summer Wine and Norah Batty's steps, and buried it by the resser I might be in with a chance. Otherwise I'd recommend moving to London or Oxford. (Shades of the Beale hypothesis and Roanoke). We've already had a hint that series 2 will have a more North American flavour. That would make a lot of sense from a marketing point of view, so can we book our fligihts to Tawoomba now. Sadly I think Japan and Australia will have to wait a bit longer, though they do have their own compensations.

Just in case it is a local cube for local people, would you like to come over and spend a month levelling our garden, and building a pond shaped hole. You never know what you might find.

I have complete faith in Mind Candy on this one.

The endgame is going to be impressive, and it'll undoubtably be as fair as possible. Look at the Pirates of the Carribean Volvo competition. Same sort of idea, but it worked out in the end that the finalists were flown to the cars location for the final.

I'm not saying that's what we can expect, I just think it might be slightly more carrot and stick rather than just "Go find it. Go on... GO Already!"

I believe that once you send your "I've got the cube, I'll be at your offices at x of the y at z" message to the ifoundit email, MindCandy will forward it to everyone on their mailing list, so everyone knows where you'll be and when.

Then it'll come down to who's the quickest or strongest. Just like in the olden days. Very Happy

I can see a slight "The Warriors" Trek across London as the lucky person/team has to fight their way through different gangs of cubehunters...

Lessee, what gangs could we have...
The Pirates
The Ninjas
Umm... The group channeling the spirits of the Americans
The 3P
