[UPDATE] Sentinel - 24 July 06 - Xia-Hifa

Quote:

Xia-Hifa Sending Unprecedented Delegation
By GARIMA KING

The City Council issued a joint statement today announcing that a delegation from Xia-Hifa will arrive later in the week for diplomatic talks. The delegation will be led by Ambassador Tao-Mei Quhifa, a highly-ranked advisor to the Xia-Hifan government. According to the announcement, the delegation is arriving to discuss the possibility of allowing Xia-Hifa to establish a permanent embassy within central Perplex City, as well as a reciprocal embassy in Xia-Hifa.

This move would be the first time a foreign government has been allowed to control property in the city in nearly 300 years. Other matters on the table include final details of the high-speed passenger railway between Xia-Hifa and Perplex City, and the possibility of increasing trade quotas, which are at present extremely limited. The delegation should be in the city for "about a month," according to the Office of the Council.

The council members all declined to comment on the matter individually, saying that they would prefer to present a unified face to the delegation when it arrives, and that in this delicate diplomatic stage, "We feel that dissent and its resolution should be handled privately.

This surprise visit by Xia-Hifa officials is yet another sign of a deepening in the ties Perplex City has to its foreign counterparts, no doubt initiated in part by the ratification of the Halley Peace Accord in March of 268. The city has also begun preparing for a new wave of tourism brought on by an expected relaxation in travel requirements for citizens of the accord's signatories.

Opponents of the city's increasing involvement with foreign governments and economics cite the poor example of Earth, a world of closely-bordered and interlocking nations. "Proximity and over-familiarity between Earth nations leads to greed and violence," said Academy sociologist Ricardo Givens. "Going down the same path as Earth will give us only hardship as our destination."

Council Leader candidate Douglass Finlay, however, called the delegation's arrival "an historic and exciting opportunity." He insists that creating economic interdependence between Perplex City and other governments will result in a "new golden age of prosperity for all parties."

Futures
By Madame Bianca, for the week of July 24

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
A situation you arguably got yourself into drags on and on without abatement. Don't worry, it won't last like this forever; but the stars say you've probably got a solid couple of months before any sudden denouement. Be strong.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Prepare yourself for long and acrimonious rounds of self-recrimination. Seriously, though, the world doesn't revolve around you, and sometimes things happen that aren't really your fault, duckling.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
What you need, my friend, is to take a good hard look at your clothing sizes and adjust as needed. Sometimes things begin to pinch and wrinkle so gradually you don't even notice there's a problem. Oh, but there is a problem, pumpkin.

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
In the days to come, you are a lightning storm of creativity. Inspiration strikes you again and again, leaving you feverishly scribbling down plans big and small. The best part: when you come up with as many ideas and plans as this, usually at least a few of them are really, really good.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
This is a good week to come out of your head and apply what you've found there to the world around you. Knowledge and understanding are valuable, sure, but knowing how and when to apply them is way better.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
Our skies have more stars, our prairies have more flowers, our forests have more life, our life more love.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
Toward the end of the week you will have trouble finding hilarity in wildly inappropriate situations. Practice biting your tongue. With your teeth. Hard. To keep from laughing, doll, or you'll find yourself in worse trouble.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
An otherwise harmless fixation on minutiae may distract you from taking a look at the things that actually matter. Sometimes it doesn't matter whether mint and lime taste good together, so much as it matters that you're out of ice.

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
Yep, there you are, just plugging along business as usual. You might be tempted in the days ahead to make some dramatic changes to your standard op, but really, if it's not broken, why fix it?

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
You're losing sight of yourself, my dumpling. It's really wonderful to give pieces of yourself to those who need it, and it's really wonderful to adjust with changing times, but you do need to set aside a core of yourself to preserve your identity.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
Someone you'd never have dreamed it of secretly looks up to you. Maybe you should take a little more care in the things that you say and do, seeing as how you're somebody's role model.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
Life can be a little bit like one of those overblown and exactingly detailed historical dramas. Sometimes, you just have to get through the long slog of tedium to get to the exciting bits.

And remember, it takes two to have a fight.

Xia-Hifa. Shocked You think that we should perhaps ask Kurt, Violet and the gang if there are any other small surprises to come which they've glossed over? Y'know, "Oh yes. The third continent on our world is in fact colonised by little blue men, with gigantic ears, who converse only in terrible limericks".

Seriously. Just, good grief, to coin a phrase "Throw us a frickin' bone. Need tha info"

Also, Futures seem a bit...hrm...not sure. The Archer especially:-

Ring any bells?

P.S. Season II: PerplexCities?

Edit: I stand corrected once more - I'd forgotten completely about that article, thanks Cassandra. I'm blaming the onset of senility.

This week's Apple Thief is the most famous stanza of Gonçalves Dias's Song of the Exile, and these four lines made it into Brazil's national anthum.

Not only is this a timely excursion into PerplexCity, but there is a shipment of parts that are 'due to go missing'. Wonder if this shipment will find it's way into this convoy??

Why has it never occurred that the 3P are acting on the accord of a rival nation? Perplex City has been going through so much that the rest of their planet, and all subsequent populations, have gone basically un-entered into any of our thought processes. Why hasn't Xia-Hifa given us a link, a hint, a how-do-you-do? Why haven't there been any international probes into cube theft blame?

I mean, as long as we may have had means of realizing that there were other nations about, the total shut-out of information is as striking as the blankout on the War. And, of all the other places before Xia-Hifa, why has each been only one name, and never with a title (town/village), unless implicit in the name? Gladstone, Wooster, Anjsbourg, Viendenbourg, Perplex City. One sounds considerably out-of-place. Schmeh.

Oh, and, I'm not dead. Very Happy

i agree 100% the possibility of a rival nation directing the third power is totally realistic, but i don't want to swear on it until something comes out smakcs us in the face calls us all idots and spells it out. i'm not sure if theres something i missed, but i don't see any motives yet.
