[UPDATE] Kurt Blog - 24th July - Turning the tide

Quote:
Here's the plan - and a recap, for those of you who haven't been paying attention. We know that a member of the Third Power, a man called Vadik, was working undercover at Hesh Records until recently. Following a bit of hacking and social engineering, we discovered that Vadik placed a call to the Academy Crypto department the day after the Cube was stolen.

While exploring the decidedly odd filesystems of the Crypto department, we came across a researcher there called Karen Moro. Karen was investigating the theft of high-tech equipment from Crypto, under orders from someone unknown. At the same time, Henrik Tanner - the Academy's security chief - told Anna that these thefts had been going on for some time, starting with Bernardo Holyoke (another member of the Third Power, now dead). He had been investigating the thefts himself until he'd been instructed to drop the case.

In other words, the Third Power are stealing equipment from the Crypto department. The equipment has something to do with Viendenbourg, a hidden military complex out in the Tanraga Mountains to the west, which isn't very heartening. We can't figure out where the Third Power are taking the stolen parts, or what they're using them for either.

So, we're going to track them. Karen has hidden isotope tags on four parts that we think the Third Power want and I've hacked into the city's AQSYS monitoring system, which is comprised of thousands of aerostats carrying sensors. Karen's received word that there will be a shipment of parts leaving Crypto some time this week - she doesn't know anything more exact than that, since she doesn't have access to the transport schedules.

However, she'll be on the lookout for when they leave. At that point, I'll hijack the AQSYS system. Once I've done this, all the aerostats will need to be controlled manually, and that's where you come in.

The AQSYS aerostats can detect the isotope tags, but only weakly. When a tag comes near, it will indicate the rough direction it's in, and when the tag is directly underneath the aerostat, it will flash. Unfortunately the aerostats move very slowly.

This means that I'll need a lot of you to co-ordinate amongst yourselves and control the aerostats so we can continually monitor the location of all four of the tagged parts. It's likely that they'll be sent in separate vehicles on different routes for security reasons, so you'll need to work together to ensure you don't lose them.

Violet, Caine, Karen and myself will be using your information to follow the parts on the ground. If any of the parts disappears or goes off course (that is, gets stolen), then we can find out where they're going. We don't intend to do any heroics, but this is the only lead we have in finding out where these parts are being taken and what they're being used for.

Oh, and I can't test the system - it would attract too much attention and probably ruin our chances when the parts actually go out, so we'll just have to hope it all works. Sound familiar?

I'll keep in touch.

I would love to do this, but it'll take place at 2 in the morning on a work day because Perplex City only exists in the afternoon from 12-6 GMT.

Timezones and all.

you reckon ?

i think this one may span a few days, and we'll need to have people in different timezones or with weird sleep patterns to keep up the 24hr surveillance...

I may well be as much use as a chocolate teapot, but it sounds like something interesting to do during my week off.

Kurt's all about the recaps Razz

For what it's worth, I sent him the following email this morning:

Quote:
Hi Kurt,

The game's afoot! Before we begin this latest installment of interdimensional creativity, I do want to convey my concern about hijacking the AQSYS sensors in this fashion.

First: do you know exactly what these things track? Is there a possibility that they contain warning systems, Cube detection devices, etc that your city is going to need to prevent, I don't know, threats of force? 3P incursion? weather manipulation?

I ask this because it seems to me there is a very high chance of political fallout from our maneuver. "Ivory tower" comments aside, have you been following the Council debates at all after Karen mentioned it? Earlywine has a specific interest in crippling AQSYS, as you've seen, which seems an odd place to begin one's 'fiscal responsibility' campaign. I'd like to know why that is, and whether he has any motivation to do this besides scoring campaign points.

So if we should successfully control AQSYS and chase after the tagged items, I'm pretty sure we'll be - how shall I put it - noticed. For a number of possible reasons, among them "Balloons Stalking Residents," "AQSYS Malfunctions, Balloons Crash into Ascendancy Point, Injuring 12" "Earlywine's Early Warning," "Academy Security Scandal," etc. (I'm having you imagine the headlines, if you will -- which is something we did not do the last time we attempted something of this nature, as you took pains to remind us.) This trace of ours also may be exactly the event Earlywine needs to have his campaign platform validated and thus boost (or confirm, depending on the polls) his election day results.

I guess you need to ask these questions (which I'm asking. heh.):

1) Can your city afford to lose the AQSYS monitor balloons?
2) Is there a compelling reason that Nathan Earlywine should not become head of the City Council?
3) To whom could Karen Moro have been reporting, and where would that information go?

Good luck. I'll be joining in if I can.

Take care,

Cassandra

excellent, I guess this may kind of work like when we were tracking Miranda across the region. Sounds like its going to be huge though if most of our PXC contacts are helping as well! Very Happy

As far as coordination goes, that raises a few questions:

a.) Should we set up some method of people being able to 'mark' on a map where they have spotted packages at various points? Or is everything going to be recorded by Kurt?

b.) Does someone 'claim' a balloon and then is able to move it? Or if two people try to move a balloon at once, does it go erratic? Should we be trying to divide ourselves among the four packages so we don't have any conflict, or is the length of time we need to be watching too long for that?

definitely need to coordinate, but until we see what we're playing with I don't think we can decide anything, just need to play fair when it kicks off..

I'll be around if it rains. My job's weather-based. Either way, should make an appearance at some point.
