Status report?

Has anyone solved all 5 correctly?

Also a question about the mechanics - will you just include completely correct entries in the drawing, or will all go in the drawing with # correct just used to determine choice order? Are incorrect answers worse that no answers? (Should I try ones I'm not at all sure of or not?) There're a couple that are really giving me headaches.

You said one might be tougher on Yanks. Could you tell us which one it is?

FranG

BTW - Cabbage, is that you I see lurking in the naughty corner?

I've found a perfectly logical solution for #2, and 2 for #5 (using the same method), but it's not what he's thinking of! I can't wait to see the solution to these! Shocked

The one that's really bugging me (besides the Brit-advantage one), is that one isn't words... Well, if it's numbers, it could be *anything* (especially if that's #2... I hate that there are no 'repeats' in that one)! And, aren't numbers words, too? For example, 'ZOTTFFSS_ _'. Confused

Yes I am in the naughty corner. For naughty read inspired but wrong. And a bit stupid.

Non-solution follows:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I thought I had a numerical sequence based on the difference between the number values (A=1, B=2, etc) for the second sequence OPRTXZ, since there is a difference of 1 between O and P, a difference of 2 between P and R, a difference of 2 between R and T, a difference of 3 between T and X and X and Z. So one difference of 1, two differences of 2, [spec] three differences of 3 and four differences of 4 (etc).

Mais non ma petit chou-fleur, ce n'est pas vrai.

It is, as I had a sneaking suspicion, a sadly embarrasing coincidence. Back to the drawing board...

Me too

Hmm.. I was looking at the same sort of thing, but with slightly different results. I think we were both wrong, but maybe only in details. I was wrong about 1 part and I think you're wrong about a different part. I won't elaborate, but look again.

Of course that doesn't mean it's the right approach.

The penney just dropped. Hehehehe. It's simpler than you think.

Should say good night, er-good morning. Enough for one day.

I believe 3-4 people have it all solved. I have the list down somewhere, but it's 3 am, and I'm not currently sure exactly where that notepad is. The way the drawing will work as follows. I'll take all the 5 for 5ers, roll amongst the lot of them, and determine their order in the card "draft". After that, I'll take alll the 4 for 5ers and keep rolling the d20 until I have enough people to fill my list. The cutoff point for *any* card at the moment is looking to be 4 for 5, and if you want a chance at a ComicCon card, I'm guessing you'll likely have to be 5 for 5, unless for some odd reason a couple chaps don't want one.

Sorry it took me so long to respond - I've been geek shopping all day.

Any chance of a last hint on the fifth, e.g. is it just hard for america, or other non-uk countries as well.

EDIT: Solved them all now.

As the deadline draws near, I figure I should let the lot of you know that the cutoff for "able to win a prize" is now at 5 for 5 - I just received the seventh set of correct answers. Good luck to the rest of you still trying - here's hoping you have that sudden flash of inspiration!

So, sorry for the double post, but deadline's up, and prize order has been determined by the almighty d8. I received 7 5-for-5 entries, and suitably enough, I had 7 prizes, making this easy. The choice order is as follows:

1: Arkai
2: Typhin
3: Austin
4: FranG
5: Badbarry
6: Echidna
7: Tufty

Please post your selections in this thread in the order mentioned and I'll do my best to make sure everyone gets their prizes.

And now, the solutions.

As I hinted at almost obscenely, all of these sequences were ROT-13d.

First sequence: VJGOBGVJG
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Answer: JBG This translates to "It was the best of times, it was the..." making the next three words "Worst of times." WOT, ROT13d, becomes JBG. Most entrants got this one.

Second sequence: OPRTXZ
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Answer: DF These letters, when deciphered, were the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th, 13th letters of the alphabet. Following the pattern of primes, you would want the 17th and 19th letters. ROT-13 Q and S to get DF.

Third sequence: UURYVOR
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Answer: OP Deciphered, you get HHELIBE, or H, He, Li, Be. The first 4 elements on the periodic table. The next two slots are, thus, B C. Ciphered, you get OP.

Fourth sequence: OTNUOU
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Answer: NU Deciphered, you get BGAHBH. Convert to digits, you get 2.71828, or E. The next two digits are 18, so AH. Ciphered, NU.

Final sequence: HVVHJTO
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Answer: OR Ah, the stumbling block - the one that Americans are disadvantaged by. Deciphered, you get UIIUWGB, or Uruguay, Italy, Italy, Uruguay, West Germany, Brazil. World Cup winners. The next two were Brazil, England. BE. Ciphered, you get OR.

I hope you people enjoyed these at least slightly as much as I did making them. Hopefully, I shall have more to come, with more cards to give away!

Could I have a #P01/#258 please, and yes, I did enjoy solving them.

If I get a few rare spares from the event today, I might do a similar giveaway later. Should I PM you my address?

Wow! I *thought* of a couple of those solutions, but couldn't get the ROT13 method to work... at least I didn't recognize anything from it. My bad! I'm glad the answers make sense. This was fun (but frustrating)! Congrats to all the winners! Wink

Hi crovax1234,

Sorry to hijack the winner's order but, as I said in my PM, I was only in this for the Special Edition card, which has now gone. I've already got all of the blacks plus numerous spares so I would feel rather mean taking a black card from you when others need it much more than me. Could you please either keep it for another competition or pass it on to one of those who scored 4 out of 5? Thanks.

Crovax1234,

Ditto.
My sentiments are exactly those of echidna. I entered the competition mainly for something to do, and it was extremely interesting and I had a lot of fun doing it - and I'm happy in the knowledge that I got all 5 right. I also entered with the off chance of getting my hands on one of the rare ComicCon cards.

I also have all of the blacks listed so it would seem a bit "rude" to take one of those where they may be a player who scored 4/5 who does need that card.

I hope this doesn't confuse it too much, I really enjoyed the quiz.
Cheers,
Tufty
