Well, it's definitely somewhere on Ross Island, I'm looking for more detailed maps now.

Edit - seems to be way north of both the outposts there (McMurdo Station // Scott Base), all the way across the channel. I would guess that it's just about equidistant from Mt. Erebus and Cape Evans.

Gimme some time and I'll find out what's so special about that location.

This is the best map I have so far: HERE. But I can't quite pinpoint the co-ords. looking for a better resolution map now.

I found a USGS map that lets you zoom in and provides lots of information/names that can be overlayed on the map. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that you can overlay longitude and latitude. The map is here:

[EDIT]http://geography.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://usarc.usgs.gov/antarctic%5Fatlas/
(didnt work perfectly on Firefox, but works well in IE). I put wrong url here originally, but have now replaced it with the proper one.

I also found this map: http://encarta.msn.com/map_701510151/Antarctic_Peninsula.html which also lets you zoom in, has longitude and latitude to a decent detail, but doesn't have many place names.

It looks like the thing we are looking for is on Hut Point Peninsula (or nearby) which is connected to Ross Island.

[EDIT]On closer inspection to the USGS map, estimated latitude and longitude are indicated in the status bar based on where your mouse pointer is on the map. The lat/long are in decimal so i converted the coordinates given on the card to decimal:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
77.643583° Latitude, 166.766250° Longitude. So i've located the landmark/place that is closest to these decimal coordinates and it seems to be 'Turtle Rock'. See the following screen-cap of the map with my mouse pointer hovering over Turtle Rock and the lat/long coords in the status bar : http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?image=polar3mj.gif
The coords arent perfect, but as i said, the map has estimated coordinates for them so i think it should be close enough. I don't have this card yet, waiting for the 5 for 4 offer before getting wave 2 cards, but if someone has this card then they can try Turtle Rock as the solve

I have contacted both the British Antarctic Survey and the US and NZ equivalents. The guys at these organisations have been pretty helpful and have come up with the following possible suggestions.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Minna Bluff, Turks Head Ridge and "There's nothing there but snow"

All of which proved to be incorrect. Sad

I have tried putting the card in the freezer to see if anything appeared, but to no avail!!!

There's quite a few places nearby (but not exact) at
http://www.linz.govt.nz/rcs/linz/pub/web/root/core/Placenames/PlaceNameDecisions/20feb2001/printable.jsp

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The closest are Tech Crags at 77 37 S 166 45 E and Grayzna Bluff
at 77 38 S 166 49 E

Unfortunately, I haven't got the card (yet!), so I can't confirm whether they're right or not.

I'm fairly sure that it's going to be
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Scott's Bones or Scott's body or something, They set up camp around there, he walked off, and the exact location isn't widely known. so something along the lines of Scott of the Antarctic, I don't have the card, so I can't try it myself

heheh.. 'Scott of the Antarctic'... lmao... not Captain Scott, or Cpt. Robert Falcon Scott, but 'Scott of the Antarctic' - priceless.

Edit: Well, don't I feel like a fool. I've just been informed that 'Scott of the Antartic' was a name that Capt. Scott has been known by after his death.

I apologise for any laugter directed your way by me Razz (apart from how you spelled Antartic wrong). Wink

Couldn't get an exact fix on this on google earth. The compass went mad, so I thought it might be (geo)magnetic south, but that doesn't seem to be fit from other references. Haven't got the card to check.
