And it came to pass after the death of Gyvann that a great convocation was called of all those who had been his friends, his followers and his students. It was in the third month, at the new moon, at the mountain of Esk. And they debated and discussed all that he had taught them, and meditated upon the holy light of the Cube and upon the words of Gyvann.
And Durisa, the Machianite, his wife, spoke saying: let us have no fortune-telling. For one of the students had told that Gyvann had come to him in a dream. And she continued: let us delve in his words, and toil in them. And let us write our own words, and continue in the meditations on the holy Cube. And let us share this light with those who may listen to our words.
And they did as she had said. And from this council grew up the mighty schools of learning in the city of Lecks and in the city of Vyehall and in the lands of the west. But that the words of Gyvann should not perish from the land, they wrote the stories of him that they remembered into volumes, and they taught them to their children, and to their children's children.

Initial thoughts This initially appears to be a star field, although it represents no section of the sky which I am familiar with.
Personally I think that the colouring of the card is a bit of a red herring designed to lead us down an immediate path of trying to identify constellations.
I have had a few days to think about this card now, and I will spoiler my thoughts since this is only the start of the thread.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Not a star field - but the colouring (white on black) and the name suggest something star related
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I noticed that the horizontal positioning of the dots across the width of the card is uniform - a graph then. Inverting the scanned image makes it easier to plot the points
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
My daughter is covering Infra Red Spectroscopy in her chemistry classes at the moment and she saw the graph and thought it looked like an IR fingerprint.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
This is as far as I have got. I suspect that it is the IR fingerprint for a particular celestial body - star/supernova/galaxy/nebula etc. That would tie in with the name and the design. How to scale the graph and compare against existing observed data is a bit beyond me right now, but I am working on it.

Or try violence. Violence can work.

Ah yes. The is no problem so great that violence can't help but work in our favor. The answer shall be ours. (Insert maniacal laughter here)

I just solved it. I won't post anything in the way of spoilers for a while so as not to tempt those of you who haven't gotten it yet.

It's more than meets the eye Pish; you're in the right direction with where you are going; maybe off by a bit, but getting there.
for the rest of you
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
when you are looking at the card, you have to think about the "variables"
honestly, if I say anything more I will give too much away, but if you have questions, I'll let you know

Hey all, I've got a quick question...I jsut solved this card a bit ago, and I must admit, I solved it by random chance. Does anyone know how you're supposed to figure out the solution? I'm curious as to what the "right" way is. Thanks all!

Take a look at the solve page on the site - there's more to see in this card. And the fact that there's more is a hint to the solve...
Also the solve box seeks a last name. Which narrows the area of inquiry substantially. Not looking for a particular star, no math.

Well, just "properly" solved this myself, with some prodding from the ominous Tim (I had solved it by guess before). My hint's gonna be this:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are two patterns to notice that greatly help in solving this card. One is stupidly obvious, and although it's not vital to the solve it does help. The second isn't so obvious at first glance, but has been seen here, and that's the "key" to the solve. No, "key" isn't a clue of any sort.
Any more than that and it does start to go into spoiler territory.

OK, I have got it now.
Rather irritatingly it was a guess and I have no clear indication as to why it is correct or how it actually maps to the card.
Very strange.
