Just as an idea of the vast oddity of some of these street names.

One is simply "18th of December 1944, road"...

http://www.worldwar2database.com/html/ardennes.htm
Describes the time period well, if you care.

Take a look at an earlier post in this thread:

He's standing on Le Pont Fortifié de Kaysersberg.

If I may make a suggestion?

I think the wrong approach is being taken for this search. Instead of having us do the legwork when, it seems, none of us is even close to that part of france, to say nothing of being able to search it for Satoshi, why not apply the 6 degrees principle in a sort of scattershot form? Why not buy a quarter page ad in the local newspaper asking for information about him? And if the reader doesnt know, I dunno, instruct them to give the ad to whoever they think would. Hardly intrusive upon the people of Kaysersberg to just let them know he's being sought, let them know he's not in trouble, hell even put it in terms of a sociological study to see if the 6degrees theory works. Bound to get some responses at least. Course I dunnu what it would cost to get an ad like that, but some site could to a pledge drive or something maybe. I know I'd chip in.

Talking about a fund, I still think the only way to get the general population interested and involved in this is to offer them a chance of winning some hard cash:) I'd put in £100 in to a prize fund but I think we'll need something like £1,000 to really get people interested. I also think there's a bigger chance of being picked up by the media if there's a reward.

New Theory - Based on Satoshi Name Clue - Worth Exploring?

Greetings all.

I've read in a few posts for this card's thread that the hint obtained - 'My name is Sathoshi' - is straightforward and there is nothing tricky about it - but I can't shake a theory I've been shrugging off for over a month now...

I lack practical knowledge/experience in the area of Japanese culture and the like, but I believe that Japanese surnames are said before their first names. If my name was Veruca Salt, I would introduce myself in Japanese as 'I am Salt Veruca'.

Perhaps the name Satoshi is both the last and first name and meant to be read from right to left, split at the O/S. So 'Sato Shi', which is last name first, first name last. If spoken in English the clue would be 'My name is Shi Sato'.

I checked Wiki and the surname 'Sato' is the most common surname name in Japan. The name means 'assistance' as well as 'Wisteria' (referring to the plant/flower) which may be a clue, if that type of plant grows in Kaysersberg.

Based on the last name first, first name last fact and the Sato surname ranked as #1 fact - this could be a possibility that our mystery man's surname is in fact Sato... I don't know about 'Shi', I have to research this name and the characters / meanings associated with it.

So ... I'm going to dig a bit into the history / meaning / Japanese character translation of these names - maybe yielding a bit of glue to hold my theory together.

p.s. I may have gone mad ... or perhaps am traveling down a well worn and worthless path. If so, do feel free to firmly grab hold of me and yank hard - until I've come back to the firm ground of reality. I'm not the kind to run to the bathroom and cry when someone 'gives it to me straight' - I prefer it, in fact.

But wait, there's more...Flickr / 6 Degrees / Dan Hon

One of the tags Dan Hon uses within his Flickr sets is 'Six Degrees' which - when explored - connects you to several other Perplexcity players and/or Mind Candy employees with the same tag, which would in turn lead you, I assume, to more and more people with the same tag ... maybe we have to use those tags to make our way to our man...

In a previous post I did look into splitting up the word and found that there is a village called Sato and Shi means city in Japanese, but as no-one said anything I didn't really look into it.

Quote:
Satsuma-Sendai (薩摩川内市 Satsumasendai-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima, Japan.

In 2005, the city had an estimated population of 103,478 in a total area of 683.50 km², giving a population density of 151.4 persons per km².

The city was established on October 12, 2004 when the city of Sendai, the towns of Hiwaki, Iriki, Kedoin and Togo, and Koshikijima Islands (which consisted of Sato, Kamikoshiki, Shimokoshiki, and Kashima villages) merged to form one new city.

The city has regular Shinkansen services to Kagoshima City and Yatsushiro, Kumamoto.

No, your idea is great! I mean it might be completely wrong, but it is the sort of lateral thinking that we need (I was getting pretty despondent with this card, but maybe it is this, or something like it that will make us crack it).

Good luck in your search...

Ok... I've decided to mess around and make a PDF poster to aid our worthy cause...

However I don't want to publicise a reward until I've raised enough to cover it (that's why this is marked as a draft and there isn't a mention of a reward on the site.)

Think I might add a paypal donate link which might get things moving Smile

After just reading through this entire thread, I feel like it would be beneficial to start a new thread so that people don't need to read through all 25+ pages that just begins with a link to this thread and lists all the facts, leads, and ideas on this guy.

Does anybody else agree with me?

I was so happy to see this post, Cabi (yeah, I went there and just slapped my my own nickname on you - hope it 'takes' and I haven't overstepped any garden boundaries). I read your 'everything is hopeless, let's just rip up our cards and move on with our lives' post last night and I wanted to reply but figured after posting twice in an hour a third post might be overkill.

Let's see, if I would have replied I would have written something like 'Cheer up, peanut ... ' or 'Hang in there!' ...

Obviously motivational speaking or any kind of emotional support for human beings was not included in my wiring. I am, however, the girl you want to call when trying to decide how best to sculk about. Sculking skills have been in my family (mother's side) forever.

Stay Strong and Focused - I promise the same ... as long as I remain unfaded.

Summary Post - I agree, AtionSong

I do agree; I've thought about the same thing you suggested but just never followed through ...

However, I'm not sure the best way to tackle it. I think there are currently three outstanding unsolved cards from all four waves. I was thinking of either having a summary post at the root of each 'PXC: [color] Puzzle Cards' folder that would list all of the cards and either 'Solved' after the name or 'Unsolved' with a link on the Unsolved ones that would bring you to the root of that card's folder - to the 'history thus far' post ...

But really with only three unsolved left ... should there just be an 'unsolved' folder at the root of 'Perplex City: Puzzle Cards' that contains summaries for all three cards and then links to the actual thread for each in their respective directory under the Silver Puzzle Cards root?

Well there's already a "Shuffled Wiki" that summarises the first 43 page thread (incidentally we are now on page 42 of the second thread, or it could be 43 by this morning I haven't looked yet*):
http://perplexcitywiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Shuffled

[Edit] All three unsolved card wiki freds can be reached via:
http://perplexcitywiki.com/wiki/Unsolved_mysteries
The fourth (Billion To One) is currently there, but empty.

Only it needs someone brave and resourceful with lots of time on their hands. I am a teacher and I should be marking my Maths right now! But there could be someone out there who wants to take on the task.

Cabi

PS Still Very Happy

* Edit: No, it's still on page 42, I just checked.
Edit 2: It's on 43 now.

Additionally, can anyone get a mixi.jp invite? It's Japan's most popular social networking site with something like 5 million members. Note also that it's all in Japanese and unfortunately my Japanese is no longer what it once was. We should create a Satoshi profile there as well.

I've managed to get hold of one at last and have set up a profile for Satoshi... http://mixi.jp/show_friend.pl?id=6538939 (you probably need to be logged in to view it!)

I got some pointers from the chap who invited me on how to make it more Japan friendly so if anyone fluent in Japanese is interested in editing it, drop me a PM and I'll send the login details. Smile
