Another Online Network - could be the six degrees we need...

Additionally, can anyone get a mixi.jp invite? It's Japan's most popular social networking site with something like 5 million members. Note also that it's all in Japanese and unfortunately my Japanese is no longer what it once was. We should create a Satoshi profile there as well.

Wondering if anyone here is using LinkedIn It is a site, must like the usual social networks (MySpace, Friendster, etc) except this one is a professional network, used to connect with people or companies you are currently or were previously involved with - co-workers, vendors, clients, partners, etc.

For each person added to your personal network (to invite someone to connect to you, you must have their name and email address to ensure you aren't a solicitor or stalker - and they must accept your request to be added) you also acquire their network and would be separated from those people by a certain degree, depending on how many layers were between you and them.

I just logged into my LinkedIn account and did a search for Mind Candy. Got a hit for Michael Smith. (Note - you will not get 'hits' for anyone unless they have become part of your network via someone else) Looks like three people I used to work wtih are networked with some of Michael's contacts. Additionally there are 8 users in the entire network that currently or used to work for Mind Candy.

In the case where a person is not within your immediate network (friends of friends), you can still see the job title, company name, previous companies, schooling, etc - the person's name and contat information is just omitted. LinkedIn allows you to contact someone up to the 3rd degree - which would be a friend of a friend of a friend - should you want to be introduced. LinkedIn handles the introduction both ways - your request and their response. Think 6th grade - asking your friend to ask a cute boy if he likes you. Rejection is a much softer blow when delivered with two degrees of separation buffer.

Currently I have 157,700 people in my network. I'd like to shoot for say ... a billion.

For anyone with a LinkedIn account - or those who plan on registering - feel free to send me a LinkedIn request to get 'linked'. This site is wordwide and there is a very good chance our Satoshi is registered and waiting for someone to find him.

My name is Sara Garcia and I work for Buy.com. My email address is saragSPLATbuy.com.

Edit: Probably don't want to have your email address available to scrapers. SPLATted. -SpaceBass

LinkedIn ... Party of Two

Thank you Ehsan and Chris - for your speedy invites.

Idea I noticed your blurb on your profile about Billion to One, Chris ...wonder if we should all use a standard message like yours - probably it should be uniform so we are easy to indentify.

What you do think? I didn't want to just snag your text and pawn it off as my own.

No probs Smile Thanks! Looks a nice site, and I'm amazed how many people I know are on there already.

You'll probably want to write something better than my quick bit of blurb - then I'll copy that Razz (I haven't put much thought into my profile yet.)

Edit: this might be a better way, I've added a company called "Perplex City" (a think tank!) and a job title of "Perplexed"...

Just tried to do the LinkedIn thing very quickly. Think I've done it correctly. Will spend some time improving my profile and connecting to other people later.

In terms of a "What are the odds?" moment, my friend and I went out and split on a box of Pure Wave 4 cards. The only silver card we both managed to get? #256, of course.

Now that I have a bit more of an active interest in solving the card, some thoughts.

First, did anyone else notice that he's going grey? I wasn't sure from the low-res scan, but with the card in front of me, it's definitely not glare. He's going grey in a snowcap, as opposed to the salt and pepper that the men in my family get. Given how much is concentrated in a spot, I'd have to guess that his age is in the late 30s, early 40s.

Either he's not really able to grow a full beard, or the pic was taken just as he was starting to grow a goatee. I'm looking at the stubble he's growing, and it looks like he's got a five o'clock shadow in the goatee area, but not on the cheecks and the jawline.

Also, just as a random thought - on the medium resolution photo on BillToOne, the blue on the back... while it looks a bit like a backpack, it also looks a bit like some sort of seat. That could be my eyes not working right, but maybe he was sitting down in a car or tour bus or something when the pic was taken. The perspective around him (particularly compared to some of the area shots others have found) seems like he would be higher up than just a standing pose, unless that area has bigger slopes than it appears from the picture.

One thing that might help us eliminate false hopes quickly - look *very* closely under his left eye, past the corner on the cheek. He has two faint freckles there as well, and that's a spot that would be very difficult to hide with facial hair (and then, he'd have to pull off a Grizzly Adams to do it).

I might be crazy, but I think that getting more details as to his appearance will help expedite the process.

Re: New Theory - Based on Satoshi Name Clue - Worth Explorin

Going on the assumption that Sato (Satoshi) is his surname, perhaps it would be possible to locate him in the phonebook. Assuming as was already suggested that he is known to MC staff he would more than likely be in Britain somewhere. There are plenty of Sato's listed in the BT Online Phonebook http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/find/residential/residential_numbers.publisha but as I don't have a list of postcodes this could take a while.

That's a lot of assumptions of course

Interesting, but I don't think it's very likely.

The problem is with someone having the first name "Shi." Shi can have many meanings, but one of the most prominent is "death." As such, it's considered very unlucky on its own as well as to make compound words with.

One of the simpler examples of how this comes into play is that "shi" can also mean "four." Because the pronunciation is the same for each character, four is considered the number of death and consequently very unlucky in Japanese (I don't speak Chinese, but I believe that's the case there as well). It's somewhat common (less than it used to be) to name a son with a number followed by -ro (also Anglicized -rou or -row), like Ichiro (first son) or Futaro (second son). However, it's very uncommon for a fourth son to get named Shiro, because it sounds like "Death's son" or the like.

Mind it's not totally unheard of - the creator of the manga (and later, anime) Ghost in the Shell is Shirow Masamune (Western ordering). However, the name Shiro is fairly uncommon and for similar reasons the name Shi is extraordinarily rare if not non-existent.

That picture above

So, who is this? And where/how did you find this picture?

I'm not convinced yet (the eyebrows are bothering me, and the ears don't look quite right). But if this photo was a few years old.....

NOTE: THIS POST IS NOT MEANT TO BE RACIST! PLEASE DO NOT TAKE IT AS SUCH!

I would just like to point out that a problem that we are having in this thread is that some people think that all Japanese people look alike.

NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS IS NOT TRUE!

I just wanted to point this out for people to consider before posting two comparison pictures.

Please don't hate me for posting this.

I'm thinking that the mole on the left cheek doesn't quite sit as low as on the fellow we're looking for.

Actually, I think the thowing part to me is that the picture on the right has a freckle on his nose. Satoshi's nose lacks freckles.

So is it just me that thinks that this guy definitely can't be our Satoshi if he's been dead 5 years?!
And isn't it slightly dubious to be posting his picture - or indeed following this line of enquiry - since it is a sensitive topic for many people?

o.o; I didn't really think about it like that. You're right and I'm extremely sorry if I've upset anyone.
