Besides that (which is a good idea), maybe you could put a "What we Know" section or something with information we.. uh... know:
-His name
-His Japanese decent (we know it, but others may not be as good at telling the difference between Japanese and Chinese)
-We know the picture was taken within the past couple of years (due the the digital camera fact posted a litte ways beack)

... I can't actually think of anything else, but I'd assume that would help narrow it down a little bit.

The digital camera thing is dodgy since everyone knows the Japanese have had them far longer than the rest of the world, maybe a hundred years Smile Neither do we know conclusively that this man is Japanese just 'cause the text is Japanese. There is more variability morphologically between members of the same "race" than between "races." [hate that word but it gets the idea across - don't flame me about it]. Of course it's prudent to start with Japanese in mind but we can't to my knowledge, exclude others definitively. I wouldn't argue with anyone that thinks this guy is Chinese, especially given the card title.

Yeah, but his name is Satoshi...so I would say he's most probably Japanese.

Maybe someone just thought that "One-in-6-Billion" would be too clunky as a card-name...

As for where the picture was taken, I would think Germany, since it looks like that pretty much everywhere in the more rural parts...but it might as well be in Austria, Switzerland, France or even somewhere in the UK.

But there are two ways of looking at this problem.

The first is to infer everything you can and make assumptions like he is probably Japanese and the location looks European.

The second is to question the assumptions, stay open-minded: he could be a naturalised American / Australian / Briton (etc), the location could have been specifically chosen to mislead as it is not typical of the place where it is actually located.

Don't think this actually helps much (except maybe the bit about staying open-minded, which I think people are anyway). I'll shut up now.

Yeah, I left his name off on purpose so if we do receive information containing the right name it'll be flagged as important to follow up (it's one of the only ways I can think of verifying leads are not just people wasting our time.) I'd also prefer not to add up any information which might make people dismiss someone who should be considered.

I've added a separate mailbox for a 'contact us' link - so not to get leads mixed up with the spam such links always lead to.

I also really like the idea of having a eye-catching poster in different languages with the guy's photo and the URL so people can download one, print it and post it up where-ever they please.

Also definitely worth pursuing press contacts once everything is in place. I've got a few but they're all UK-based.

I agree on keeping open-minded and not necessarily putting his name on the site. The way I see it, right now we may have enough information to verify if someone is our guy, but not enough information to actually find him on our own. So being able to identify likely candidates (once we get this off the ground) will be very helpful.

Speaking of helpful, I can take care of the german translation for the site.

I've been thinking (dangerous, I know), and am probably barking up entirely the wrong tree, but I need to get these thoughts out of my brain:

The UN declared that the world's population reached 6 billion in 1999, and (arbitrarily it seems) said that the 6 billionth child was born in Sarajevo. Various people have commented about the architecture in the picture looking European rather than Oriental, so does Sarajevo have buildings like those in the photo?
Or, if the chap in question is Chinese: I found something that said the population of China was projected to reach 1 billion by 1980. Did China do a similar thing and declare a certain child as the billionth person in China? If they did, might this be him?

I doubt any of this is going to be any use at all, so I'm going to stop thinking now.

Wow. What amazing thinking. Wish I'd thought of it. Cool

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I thought I better try tubingen, having mentioned it ages ago. It was wrong.

Found a site called windmills of japan, which has photos of the shakespeare country park and dutch and danish villages. None looked close enough to try. Have been puzzling over the blurred hillside, which made people think about the great wall. I'd hoped it would be clearer on the actual card, but not so. It could just be a line of trees, but it looks a bit more like an artificial construction.

Still avoiding spoilers here because it's mostly spec:

Just a thought (nice thinking, by the way, myf), the hint: My name is Satoshi could (knowing MC) not be as straightforward as first thought. It could, of course, be perfectly true, which is most annoying.

And seeing as Von is the one who sent the hint... could he be revealing something we don't know!?

Satoshi Lubik?!?

But seriously, this is the hardest card... so personally, I believe it's going to be as straightforward as the card says: You just have to find this man. Which is hard enough anyway.

Oh, and by the way, China has 1.3 billion people, but Billion To One obviously sounds better :p

Add www.billion2one.org to your MSN names and get the man's face as your DP. That's what I've done!

Okay,

My comments on the last few posts.

Great site, quick to pull it out of the bag, however it was perhaps a little hasty. I think MC should have been asked before using the picture on the site, I think there needs to be an explanation on there as to why we need to find him, why he's so important and I wouldn't be too sure that he holds clues to where the cube is. This is implied on the site and perhaps shouldn't be.

That said, it's not a criticism I do commend your work and think it's great you have a page up with translations up so soon.

Regarding Vons hint, it's exactly that! It's not cryptic nor is it supposed to confuse us-in my experience hints don't do that, even at Mind Candy.

It would be nice to get some more leads (such as the 6 Billion people thing in 1999) as we may be on the wrong track. In my opinion, this card is as obvious as we suspect, but we need some other spec to make us confirm or deny what we already think.

Excuse me if I appear rude, it isn't meant to appear like that; I'm just trying to keep it real. Cool

great work on the site guys :)

hope no-one minds but i bulletinned (and i dont do that *ever*) and left a comment on scarlett's myspace to the following effect:

Quote:

Do you know this man?

He has valuable information as to the whereabouts of a priceless artifact.

If you have any information as to the whereabouts of this man, please contact www.billion2one.org.

If you think any of your friends might know him, please pass this bulletin on to them - chances are, someone only 5 links in the chain away from you will know this man!

Rewards for information may be available. For more information about this cause, please visit www.perplexcity.com

Thanks,

Rachel =)

myspace.com/spugmeistress

I said rewards may be available, as it seems to have been quite a good plan for getting people to use the 13th labour client, so maybe we could get a little incentive or two for information here?

I haven't got this card, but I'm very intrigued as to how this guy fits in with everything - I'd assume that he'd have to be friends with Mind Candy or someone to even agree to letting us stalk him in the first place!

another idea - i know triska got mentioned in the letters page of the metro once when they were looking for a book (i remember reading it, and only later when i got into PXC, meeting the guy who sent it in!) so i think spamming contacting personals, letters pages, social networking websites, all that kinda stuff is a good way to go.

and yes, the 'lets get our players to advertise the game for us *even* more' plan is absolutely genius ;) *doffs cap to Mind Candy's lack of marketing budget*

rach =)

This is what I'm talking about, there is absolutely no proof behind that statement, as with most of the cards, they have absolutely nothing to do with the cube. I'd be very surprised if we find him before the cube is found. Rolling Eyes

Criticise away (as long as it's of the constructive variety.) Very Happy

I've mailed MC (about this and something else) but they're not the speediest to reply - I'm hoping for an ok from them before really pushing the site.

I've got someone doing an Italian translation.

Yeah, I was unsure when I added that sentence to the site myself, however I thought it was a decent way of explaining why we were looking for him without sounding too confusing or too creepy to the masses. It also nicely ties in a link to Perplex City. He probably wont be able to help directly, but solving the card means more points, more points may mean a silver leitmark, and a silver leitmark may hold clues to finding the cube - therefore indirectly he can help us find the cube.

Edit: for anyone who can help with translations

I've made a ZIP of the language-specific files which you can download.

I've also added a credits page:

I've set up a channel on the same IRC server as #syzygy (irc.chat-solutions.org port 6667) for discussion on techniques to spread the word, named #satoshi. All are welcome to come join the discussion, we've got a fair few ideas kicking around.
