What a great puzzle. Definitely one of my faves. I was a little bit out doing it with pen and paper but AgentLex's flash program got me to the right answer - so cheers to him.

This is so frustrating, I have a safe and working route which takes 253, surely this should be accepted?!

I have to go back to my route and try and add on time now which is very odd!

EDIT: Scrap that, I finally got it!!

I tried for ages and came up with the values cabbage had to start with i.e.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
254 once the various assumptions about button delays etc. taken into account.

Given that wasn't the right answer, I tried a different approach and got

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the same as Twixwolf but with a different route in the middle (avoiding the green/yellow/pink guards without crossing over to the right in the middle or following mr green around

so I started to investigate why the lower one wasn't valid and came to the conclusion that

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
at the end of my 254 route I was racing along the mr.blue corridor to hit the two switches top right on the way to the door - i.e. no retracing of steps, but you can't technically make it round the corner without getting spotted as he catches you up. Since it takes 2 seconds to move, you are technically still in the long corridor as he moves up and catches you - hence you have to approach that section along the top corridor and come down - thus retracing your steps as you turn back to head out the door.[spoiler]

Hope that helps

Michael

Its like its inspired by this card! Or is it the other way around? Very Happy

There is even an escape-from-jail level after you get caught!

I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it.

Last card to solve that someone else has solved and it's ruined my lunch-hour (which has turned into a lunch 2 and a half hours).

Good news!

I finally updated the flash thinger to show you what happens each second. When you press a direction button, you'll see a second "you" pop up for half a second, then the first will disappear. This shows you being, in terms of the puzzle, in both squares at once as you move, but it does mean it takes a little longer to test a route out.

PS: You may have to clear your cache to load the new version. For some reason, a ctrl-F5 on the page doesn't seem to load the new one, at least in Firefox.
Alternatively, you can just load up this file.

I have to admit, that even with the Flash simulator, I'm having a lot of difficulty with this one. Trying to hit the button on the left as the first task is impossible--if you wait and ride the heels of the white guard, then run for the button, you can't press it and hide around the corner before he back comes around the corner and can see you; if you hide around the corner first, then press the button, there's no way to go up without the pink guard seeing you or to double back without someone seeing you through that long central hallway.

I figured I might follow the white guard a bit longer and hit the two buttons in the upper right first, then sneak back around and hit the other buttons. I can do that, but get hung up trying to come back to that stupid lower-left button.

What I've learned through this whole thing is: (1) there are a couple of nice hiding spots where you can relax forever without a guard seeing you; (2) going clockwise around paths that guards travel is much better than going counter-clockwise; (3) I would make a horrible cat burglar; (4) I hate this card.

Maybe I'm making a bad assumption--can the guards see the whole way down corridors, or only as far as their light beams?

Edit: nevermind! Solved it on the first try after reevaluating my assumptions. You know what you get with assumptions, don't you? Yeah, that's right, you make an ass out of umption. Or something.
