The Official SpaceBass European Tour '04

So me and a friend of mine are crossing the pond for a couple of weeks in May, from the 15th through the 30th. We've got our itinerary worked out for the most part and are looking for suggestions of cool things to see and do around the locations we've chosen, and suggestions for moderately priced lodging (not economy - no hostels! and not five star either - all my money goes into this site Wink ). Also, I'd be really jazzed to meet up with any European ARGonauts while we're there, especially if you want to show us around while you buy us copious amounts of tasty alcoholic beverages. This might even be a chance to meet some of your fellow local ARGonauts if you haven't already!

Here's our schedule. Pipe up if ya wanna meet up!

Sat 15 - 4:15 pm depart Portland
Sun 16 - 11:20 am arrive Frankfurt, get on a train to Nice via Strasbourg
Mon 17 - arrive Nice (time unknown)
Tue 18 - Nice (day trip to Monaco)
Wed 19 - Nice (day trip to Cannes)
Thu 20 - Nice (might day trip to Monaco this day instead, for practice race)
Fri 21 - Nice (Corsica?)
Sat 22 - travel to Paris
Sun 23 - Paris
Mon 24 - travel to London
Tue 25 - London
Wed 26 - travel to Amsterdam
Thu 27 - Amsterdam
Fri 28 - Amsterdam
Sat 29 - Amsterdam, travel to Frankfurt
Sun 30 - 1:05 pm depart Frankfurt, 2:30 pm arrive Portland

I'd also welcome any suggestions on the best place and best prices for pre-paid SIM cards for my cell phone - it's GSM and I just unlocked it for use on different carriers the other day. I understand it's way cheaper to buy a pre-paid card from a local carrier in Europe than to get hit with the international roaming charges.

[4/6/4 edited itinerary -s.]

A few links that might be helpful:

www.o2.co.uk, www.vodafone.co.uk and www.orange.co.uk are all UK mobile phone networks that do SIM-only, pay as you go deals. Cost of the card is around £10, usually require a minimum £10 credit to be purchased too. Not sure if they extend further into Europe without massive roaming charges, but they should be able to tell you.

For accommodation, www.travelodge.co.uk and www.travelinn.co.uk both offer pretty cheap but reasonable hotel accommodation. Usually around £30 - £40 per room per night for a twin room, although as always London will be a bit more expensive. I'd say the Travel Inns are a better bet as they usually have a pub alongside Wink If you're prepared to leave it to the last minute, then www.laterooms.co.uk always have an assortment of last minute deals at various hotels, but you take a chance on them having something in the right price range & area.

Hope this helps - I'd join you for drink or 3, but London's a little too far for me on a school night Crying or Very sad

Whoa, what the hell is this, you're going to be in London on May 24th? I think it goes without question that I will make the trip down from Oxford to meet up with you, and if circumstances permit, perhaps I might be able to arrange a meeting with other interesting folks in London. Give me an email or something closer to the time.

Whoa, didn't see this thread before... as I already told you, I'll probably be there around at the time you're gonna be in Amsterdam, so please let me buy you a beer at Leidsche Plein in exchange for that super secret CD-ROM of Project MU behind the scenes stuff Laughing

Oh and as for suggestions on where to go and what to see, I'd like to quote Bagsbee and ask if you're looking for tourist-y stuff, cultural stuff (museums, music, etc), gastronomical stuff or just some flat-out drinkering? Smile

I live in Germany

Weird, I am from Portland and live in Germany (near Frankfurt). I must definitely get in touch to meet you if possible.

Sweet! How about Saturday afternoon/evening, May 29th? Even weirder, I was born in Germany and live in Portland. Surprised

Only a week to go Smile

I only just noticed your question about GSMs and SIM cards. When in downtown Amsterdam, there are tons of little shops where you can easily buy a pre-paid SIM card, like The Phonehouse, BelCompany or Tell-Me. There isn't much difference in price, although KPN and Vodafone are a bit more pricey than carriers like Orange or T-Mobile.

Oh btw, make sure your phone is tri-band, i.e. supports the GSM1800 frequency (which, if I'm not mistaken, is a military frequency in the US, but the common GSM frequency here Shocked )

Have you decided what to do with your time in Amsterdam yet? Let me know if I can help out with suggestions Smile

Last Call

As Giskard says, only a week to go! Anyone who wants to meet up should probably PM me or something to exchange contact info. For any Brits who want to come to London, we're arriving early afternoon on Monday the 24th and leaving early morning on Wednesday. I'm thinking Monday night for heavy drinkering. Very Happy

Giskard, Nash gave me some good info for getting my phone working in Frankfurt (and yes, it's dual-band EGSM 900/1800 with auto-switching, and I've hacked it to remove the stupid AT&T carrier restriction [yay, nokia!]), but I'm totally open to suggestions for where to go in and around Amsterdam. Smile

Travelogue

I've posted this in channel once but it's getting long enough now that I'm comfortable posting it here without getting yelled at for it not being finished yet. And yes, I do have a ways to go before it's finished. Wink
