The other book in the Auction

What ever happened to the other book in the auction, the one with Wes' notes in it? Passion was the winning bidder.
She did post her notes on the pencil & doodles in the margins -

Quote:
This copy came from the Harrisburg, PA Public School library. It's sometimes hard to tell what is current notation and what might be an almost century old pencil mark by a student back then. I'll post everything I find in the pages.

Website: http://www2.cs.uregina.ca/~barnard/idylls.html

First Page:

To Dad:

Thought you'd enjoy this.
Maybe it'll inspire you.
Todd K.
Note: Clearly new inscription All caps.

::star:: Shows Arthur as both human and "ideal."
Note: fainter than the first. Not sure if it's
new or old.

A LEGEND?
Note: Very faint, but appears to be some printing as first at the top of the page.

The Coming of Arthur

Line 63 has an "x" next to it. The line begins: "For while he linger'd there,..."

Line 150 has written in the margin: Merlin's Master?

Line 175-6 has a crescent next to it: For bold in heart and act and word was he, Whenever slander breathed against the King --

At the bottom of this page there's also (in lighter pencil): end Wed (this looks like different handwriting)

Line 270 has a arrow point to it and parenthesis around it. The line is: A momentary likeness of the King;
Note: There's some lines next to the arrow that don't look like anything to me. They are very faint. Will try to get a scan or picture of them.

Line 337 has a faint pencil line under it: Lines 336 and 337 are: 'Ay,' said the King, and hear ye such a cry? But when did Arthur chance up you first?'

Line 362 had the words "fairy changeling" circled and in pencil there's a notation next to the line "fairy changling."

The next page is a bit of a problem. Along the left edge of the page (next to the spine) and across the top are light pencil scribbles. Nothing that makes sense. We'll try to get a good picture of scan of it. On this page there's a note that says "The Dra......" next to line 400.

On the last page there are so lines at the top of the page. If I can't get a picture or scan of them I'll do a tracing.

Gareth and Lynette

On the first page is written "20 pages."

On the next couple of pages there are some doodles. Once again, I'll try to scan or photograph them - if not I'll do a tracing.

Line 136 has parenthasis around it: (Who should be king save him who makes us free?')

Line 160 has a dark line under it and the a lighter one under that.

Line 162 has parenthasis around it: ('The thrall in person may be free in soul,)

Line 169 has an odd doodle in front of it.

Line 291-292 has parenthesis around it: (Our one white lie sits like a little ghost Here on the threshold of our enterprise.)

Line 477 (middle) - 480: (...and Gareth bow'd himself With all obedience to the King, and wrought All kind of service with a noble ease That graced the lowliest act in doing it,)

Line 494 (middle) - 497: (But if their talk were foul, Then would he whisle rapid as any lark, Or carold some old roundelay, and so loud That first they mock'd, but, after, reverenced him.)

Line 574 - 578: (Then that same day there past into the hall A damsel of high lineage, and a brow May-blossom, and a cheek of apple-blossom, Tip-tilted like the petal of a flower;)

Just above line 1141 on page 55 is a scribble that is the shape of a fish that's filled in with pencil and a small oval on a slant with a small tail - looks kinda like a big looped "9" on a slant.

Just above line 1226 is the word "here" in script. The line is "And Lancelot said:"

Line 1230 - 1231: (Victor from vanquish'd issues at the last, And overthrower from being overthrown.)

Line 1319 - 1320: (I know but one - To dash against mine enemy and to win.)

Above line 1329 on page 61 is a scribble that looks like a flower but is shaded over on the diagonal.

The Marriage of Geriant

There's a scribble that looks like one oval inside of another.

Next to line 24 and 25 is a scribble that looks like an box with three loops on the right side.

Line 273 - 274: The word "sparrow-hawk" is underscored and there's a scribble that looks like a bird in flight that you'd see in the distance of a drawing - like an elongated "m"

Line 347 has a notation: "Fortune's Song"

'Turn, Fortune, turn thy wheel and lower the proud;
Turn thy wild wheel through sunshine, storm, and cloud;
Thy wheel and thee we neither love nor hate.

'Turn, Fortune, turn thy wheel with smile or frown;
With that wild wheel we go not up or down;
Our hoard is little, but our hearts are great.

'Smile and we smile, the lords of many lands;
Frown and we smile, the lords of our own hands;
For man is man and master of his fate.

'Turn, turn they wheel above the staring crowd;
Thy wheel and thou are shadows in the cloud;
Thy wheel and thee we neither love nor hate.'

'Hark, by the bird's song ye may learn the nest,'
Said Yniol; 'enter quickly.' Entering then,
Right o'er a mount of newly-fallen stones,
The dusky-raftered many-cobwebbed hall,
He found an ancient dame in dim brocade;
And near her, like a blossom vermeil-white,
That lightly breaks a faded flower-sheath,
Moved the fair Enid, all in faded silk,
Her daughter. In a moment thought Geraint,
'Here by God's rood is the one maid for me.'
But none spake word except the hoary Earl:
'Enid, the good knight's horse stands in the court;
Take him to stall, and give him corn, and then
Go to the town and buy us flesh and wine;
And we will make us merry as we may.
Our hoard is little, but our hearts are great.'

Geriant and Enid

Line 250: "humorous ruth remark'd" is circled with the word "pity" next to it. This appears to be a notation of the meaning of the word from the books "Notes" at the end.

Lancelot and Elaine

On the first page of this section, page 119 is written the number "86" that is underscored - very light pencil.

Line 1 - 4: (Elaine the fair, Elaine the lovable, Elaine, the lily maid of Astolat, High in her chamber up a tower to the east, Guarded the sacred shield of Lancelot;)

Page 124 has a scribble at the bottom - can't really descibe it. Will get a scan or picture of it.

Page 125 has a upside down "v" scribble at the top. Two sets of triangles on the right and left. The ones on the right are just outline and those on the left are filled in with pencil. They are on their side, not standing upright.

Page 131 has an "R" and an "r" at the top of the page. (Line 394 is the first line on that page.)

Page 133 has two scribbles. One looks like and angel from the side with raised arms and the other is what could be a four leaf clover. Line 460 is the first line on the page.

Line 672 - 674: (I know not if I know what true love is, But if I know, then, if I love not him, I know there is none other I can love.')

Line 741: "Her guiltless rival" is circled.

Line 958: Has the word "begin" written just about the line.

Line 1418: Has the word "end." written just below the line.

The Holy Grail

Just above the title to this section is written "Percival the Pure." There's also and exclamation point and an arrow pointing to the title.

Line 67: Each of these words is underlined individually - But who first say the holy thing

Line 68: Each word is underscored - A woman

Line 290 has the words "The Grail" written next to it with an arrow pointing toward it. "But I, Sir Arthur, saw the Holy Grail,"

The Passing of Arthur

Above the title is written the word "begin"

Next to line 180 is written the word "stop"

There are some scribble here that I can't descibe and will have to get a scan or photo of them.

Line 210: (A little thing may harm a wounded man) <- also undescored

Line 300: (I will arise and slay thee with my hands)

Line 414 415: (More things are wrought by prayer Than this world dreams of.)

Line 423: Bound by gold chains about the feet of God - "bound" and "God" are underlined

Line 449 - 450: ('He passes to be king among the dead, And after healing of his grievous wound He comes again)

There's a piece of what looks like part of a page that has 2 3 0 - 1 written on it.

Now, is there anything we need from these pages?

Well, um, everything. Very Happy Good thinking Kona Razz

I found this site with the lines broken down in numbers by 5's. Each section of the poem starts over again with numbers still counting by 5's. (Like above). May help us when we have to find something. I was not going to go counting each and every line. I don't mind research, but that would have been ridiculous.

One of the symbols on the page is the elongated m "bird" with a double underscore - one is lighter than the other. There is what also appears to be a symbol that looks like a slice of a pie standing on it's tip. Does that ring a bell with anyone?
