Well, it is already agreed that the "gorge" was created 7 years before the discovery of the cube. We have been advised by the Academy (via Mind Candy) to keep the cube away from radiation. Therefore, if the cube is to blame for the damage, we are led to believe that there would be radiation traces left behind. So, the people of PxC would believe it a dangerous place to go near and rebuild.

Please forgive me, I am no scientist, I may not even being using the correct terminology here, but I am sure you get the general idea. The point I *really* want to make is this:

If the cube is infact harmless in the radioactive respect, could the Academy and possibly the Perplexian Government leading the public into *believing* that there is radiation left on the site? We already know that Gillit Rd is in this area, a place where the Government/Sente/The Academy/The Third Power wish to keep secret.

(I say Third Power, as we do not know how far their involvement in the Academy goes. Nor do we know how much of the Government it has infiltrated and nor do we know whether or not the popular speculation of Sente being an evil Third Power agent is true.)

On the other hand, Kurt didn't seem to bothered about these things when visiting Gillit Rd. Maybe we should keep an eye on him and see if he develops a third eyeball? Razz

OR he may not be bothered as being a part of the CRT he knoweth the true properties of the cube and what it is capable of? *Le sigh* This sort of thinking makes my brain hurt.

Yes people, the RSM has landed in full force. Smile

Gorge

I think that a gorge is usually formed by erosion from a stream or river or from a lava flow. Seismic activity can be involved in altering the course of a river so that over time a gorge is eroded. So wouldn't the catbite gorge have formed by similar means? I know they mention a catastrophic event in connection with the gorge, so maybe they just appropriated the name because of the shape of the gorge.

I have a question: since the Cube was originally found near a gorge, does it make sense that it could end up near (or in) one again right here on Earth?

I know that there is the Avon Gorge and the famous Bridge over it in Bristol. (yes, I became familiar with this area while playing another game - Orbital Colony - where a package was hidden by the observatory.)

Just a thought.

Because it came from one giant hole, it'll be hidden in another?

It's a long shot.

Hasn't Catbite been associated with lots of strange stuff recently though? Ill hikers, giant mushrooms, that sort of thing?

That's true. I find it a tad odd that all of it has been happening rather recently though. Perhaps we should ask our dear PXC residents if there's been strange developments in the past?

Oh, there's no chance the Cube would be causing any sort of that weirdness on Earth, no...

the cube in the gorge ;)

hehe - I didn't meant that the Cube was causing any odd effects on Earth -I just liked the symmetry of the Cube being found on Earth in the same sort of place it was found in PPC.

Please indulge me, disparate collection of thoughts along a theme that I think is too much of a coincidence, but haven't been able to reason through myself yet.

  • Viendenbourg; sounds of drilling from a huge building, long and low.
  • Silburn Grigg's mine;
  • Mining experiment; an experiment being conducted (with a certain level of secrecy) by Sente. Involves "accretion" of a substance. Probably at one of the above two sites.
  • Anthony Granier and Edwina Mountling's historical mining experiment.
  • Catbite Gorge; catastrophically formed, whether naturally or otherwise. Perhaps circumstantially, perhaps not, location of the discovery of the cube.
  • Catacombs; Extensive, running under entire city and beyond (specific mentions at coast by Mobius strip, Newguard ruins, Academy etc)
  • Gillit Road Tube Station

Firstly there is the obvious fact that there is something worth having in them there hills, present in vanishingly small amounts, it requires "accretion" and Granier said that they had extracted "sufficient of the material for my Master's experiments. There is so little, so very little, and almost all of it will be needed if the thing is to be done." It is either volatile in itself when it reaches a certain critical mass (which seems to be quite a small amount) or it is capable of combination with the something else that makes it a bit dangerous. Seems to be a desirable process for military purposes, but also for benign purposes?

The catacombs interest me as there has never been an explanation for their purpose. There's been no mention of burials that I can find (and even if there has been they could have been co-opted for this purpose). Suggests to me another historical mining effort that it wouldn't take too much of a leap to assume was for this same substance. Did this result in the production of the cube? We know that it too is capable of destruction (as poor old Hesketh Zeller, and Monica and Miranda both thought it was a weapon, or could be used as such).

An argument against this would be that the cube is "not made of any known naturally occurring substance" in Perplex City, which is fairly definitite. We do have evidence that this fact could be the result of a historical cover-up as with Edwina Mountling "To be blunt, my lord, I have been sent here to ensure that certain matters, certain elements of knowledge should be kept only for her, and for the group of loyal scholars she has formed. She wishes the power for herself. To do what, I know not." (as an aside, genesis of 3P?). And it would be advisable to keep the fact that your soil is riddled with tiny, but significant amounts of a dangerous substance a secret.

I can't help the niggling suspicion that this has something to do with gold, which is supposed to be in limited supply (I think this came from information about leks and the fact that they were silver, am I right?).

This is old spec and I dredge it up with dread as it's boring and pointless, but the cube is supposed to be kept away from water, acetone and liquid mercury. Liquid mercury dissolves gold, acetone has an important role in the generation of gold nanoparticles acting it seems as some sort of solvent, though I don't understand the chemistry and it doesn't seem to be a proper dissolution; and water could either be a knowing wink at Aqua regia which dissolves gold, or perhaps the presence of gold in seawater to 1 or 2 ppb.

A massive gold explosion is a bit of a stretch though. Not sure whether there are any physical properties that could be used in a devastating way...electrical conductance? Chunky chav man-bangles?

Please treat the gold stuff as a whole different kettle of fish and entirely separate from the more sensible stuff.

maybe the cube is gold? we've never gotten a very descriptive explination of the cube other than that its 10x10x10x10x10x10 and metallic with a carving on one side.

I'm sorry but I don't recall the cube being 6-dimensional.

Heh, I went through the same line of thought concerning gold at one point, but later saw that yes, virginia, there is gold in Perplex City. (The Academy gates are made of gold, for instance. Also jewelry, etc)

The gorge could have been created through an underground explosion/detonation. It's possible that the same Cube material mined from Viendenbourg existed underground near Catbite Gorge, and some accidental or deliberate reaction occurred. I expect the Gorge is part of a fault line, either way.

Maybe they're cheap gates they bought at the market and after a while they'll turn their skin green and give them a terrible rash.

I didn't like it as I wrote it, but sometimes I just need to get these thoughts out of my head and onto a thread, otherwise I can't find the right change for the bus, tie-up my shoe-laces, breathe etc. I've still got my money on a subterranean finale though.

Count again dontpanic42 (6 sides, 12 edges on a cube).

More (or less) seriously...

Surely Catbite Gorge could have been created by the citizens of Perplex City, armed with shovels, maps and tape measures - trying to find a mysterious artefact from another (Tlon-ish) world as part of a puzzle competition. The winner, in 7AC seems to have opted for the no publicity.

Please do not repeat this disaster on Earth; as Von's hint to Circuitous says: "Resist guessing".
