Obsidian is the first 'black' gem that comes to my mind...

As has been mentioned, gems can have different colours, and obsidian is not always black either...

I saw this somewhere else but don't see it on this thread...

Clearly, there is some connection with card 156 and the 'dearest ring':
http://www.london-victorian-ring.com/dearest-ring-v2.htm

Can't be just coincidence that the exact same stones are used. Also note the similar 'regard ring' found on this site:

Ok, I thought I'd get some more discussion going on this, due to recent revelations on the "five fingers".

Following FairmontKing's links, it seems likely that it is a reference to a "Dearest ring"

With DEAREST spelt out like:
Diamond, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Topaz.

The "mingled" could be some sort of anagram clue, as in crosswords.

There could be a significance to the emerald, as it is the only gem to be repeated, possibly linked to "one choice remained".

edit: or maybe it's an anagram of DEAREST without 2 Es...

It's not just Bold and Regular...

Ok, I have looked and looked, but I have found nothing to indicate that anyone else has noticed what is probably a very key point to deciphering the hidden 'gemstones' text.

It's not just Bold and Regular.
There are 4 variants there, Thin, Regular, Bold and Bolder.

Rubies, Sapphires and Topaz are in Boldest
Diamonds are in Bold
Emeralds are in Regular
Amethysts are in Thin

Go back and take a good long look for yourself, you'll see that it is true. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner capable of picking the letters up at all, so this took a lot of eyeballing...
I've been attempting to play with the significance of this for a couple weeks now to no avail, so have at it.

Actually Topaz is not as bold as Rubies and Sapphires (compare the As of Topaz and Sapphire, it's very visible). I can't decide if there is a difference between Rubies and Sapphires, though.

heh, I spent hours on this a couple of weeks ago. The font thickness order is:

Rubies and Sapphires
Topaz
Diamond
Emerald
Amethyst

There may be some funny stuff up with height as well - the last "rubies" looks suspiciously short. However, it also may be an artifact/illusion.

This order, as far as I can tell, reflects the specific gravity or density of the gems. Haven't come up with anything else yet.

If it helps:

(Specific Gravity)-(Hardness in Mohs)-(Refraction Index)
Rubies (3.96-4.05)(9)(1.757 - 1.779)
Diamonds (3.51)(10)(2.417)
Emeralds (2.63-2.91)(7.5-8.0)(1.560-1.605)
Topaz (3.5-3.6)(8)(1.607-1.627)
Amethysts (2.65)(7)(1.532-1.554)
Sapphires (3.96-4.05)(9)(1.757-1.779)

Is it possible that as #156 is one of the cards with the numbers relating to the risk game, that the bolded gemstones could be relevant to this as well?

A possible playing order has now been found, resulting in a four-player game. The bolded gemstones could represent the players' colours as follows:

Rubies = Red
Diamonds = White/Grey
Topaz = Yellow
Sapphires = Blue

With the order that they appear on the card being the starting order of play.

probably a massive trout (cos im too lazy to check the other threads) but has anyone thought they may be birthstones.

RUBIES -July
DIAMONDS - April
EMERALDS - May
TOPAZ - November
AMETHYSTS - February
SAPPHIRES - September

taking the months as numbers we get 7 - 4 - 5 - 11 - 2 - 9

tried this as a mini-book cipher on #30 and got

SCIERA?

any help for anyone?

Confused

Shouldn't that be UCIERA (S being the 8th letter, not the 7th)? Don't know what to do with it, though. Maybe an anagram...

The first letter of each gemstone, on a qwerty keyboard:
Q W E R T Y
_A S D F

I don't know what this could mean.

Possibly just coincidence.

it seems fair to point out a country by using their currency

Question

Which bears the question: What does pound?
A heart pounds. Waves pound the shore (plural, wouldn't work). What about ARTILLERY pounding the enemy? Not sure how it fits in it, but it seems to me that it's pointing to the Risk game again.
